5 Tips For Better Shipboard Sleep on a Cruise

- Hey cruisers, I’m Sheri with CruiseTipsTV. I have a confession. When I’m tired, I get, well let’s just say I’m not as fun as I usually am. And cruising is all about fun. So let's keep the fun ship cruising and jump right in to "5 tips for getting better sleep" while on your cruise.
#1- Block that light!
If you have an inside cabin you won’t have any problems with this, but mornings in ocean view and balcony cabins can sometimes have the glare of a thousand suns. If you’re a light sensitive sleeper, like I am, there are two things you can do - the first is to pin your curtains closed with a few clothes pins and the second is to invest in a cozy sleep mask, like this one. This little guy is about $5 bucks on Amazon, and has been a sleep game-changer for me, especially when my husband and son tune in to late night cartoons after an exciting day ashore. Sleep masks allow me to drift off way faster, without being woken up (or bothered) by light.
#2- Choose a quiet cabin!
Not all cruise ship cabins or staterooms are created equal. If you’ve seen our video on how to choose a cabin, you may remember that we prefer rooms at the end of a hall. Cabins set AWAY from main areas, including stairs and elevators, tend to get less foot traffic in the hallways. What we didn’t mention is that cruise ship mechanical operations can be NOISY. We’ve been on a few cruises where lifeboats and anchors were lowered into the sea with some LOUD equipment at the crack of dawn, so now, we research this and try to avoid those areas. If you’re a light sleeper, this matters. If not, I wouldn’t worry about this one.
#3- Skip the midnight buffet!
I know, I know, I sound like your grandmother here, but folks…we all know we’ll have a better shot at zonking out if we don’t eat too close to bedtime. Grabbing a late night slice of pizza is SUPER tempting on a cruise, but you’ll feel better if you don’t. Okay, enough about that.
#4- Quit drinking a few hours before bed.
Okay, I know, I sound like grammy again…darnit! Well, It might seem like grabbing a glass of wine before bed will make us sleepy, but science is showing the opposite to be true, so if sleep is an issue for you, you might considering capping off the cocktails a few hours before you hit the pillow.
#5- Grab a book and put away the technology.
Unplugging on vacation is JUST as hard for me as it is for you, so I get it. Most people I know grab their phones and tablets before bed, and that’s hard not to do at home. But, folks…we’re talking about vacation here AND I don’t know about you, but I’m not going to pay for pricey internet connectivity at sea, so I’d rather plan ahead, crack open my balcony door, listen to the waves and smell the SEA and try to READ myself to sleep.
Oh, and a little bonus tip, if you have extra room in your suitcase, packing your own pillow can be a neck saver!
I know that this isn't a very practical answer, but spend many months, as I did, sleeping on an aircraft carrier. After having to fall asleep while jets kept landing just (literally) over my head I learned to be able to sleep through anything.
Great video... especially the creative use of "granny thoughts"!
+Jim Zimmerlin Hey Jim!! Thank u. We had fun with this one, and our can of $3 silver hairspray!
Love all your great tips for this first time cruiser Thank you ! 😘
loved granny that was too cute... you should bring her back in a upcoming episode
We have little kids and they need some sort of night light. Leaving the bathroom ajar with the light on is a little too bright. We buy a pack or 2 of glow sticks from the $1 store. Each of the kids get a glow stick every night. This allows the kids to have the light they need without being to bright. They like that they can wear them in bed and use them to see on the way to the bathroom. It is a cheap and fun way to light the way without having too much light keeping you awake.
+Rebecca Parido I absolutely love this tip! Thank you for sharing it with all of us :-)
The mother charater is the funniest thing ever....lol, i really enjoy watching you guys!!!

A highlight even my teenagers still talk about- the restful night sleep and the naps! I love your shirt in this video. Any chance you have a link to it somewhere? ;) The anchor cap & popsocket from your Amazon market arrive at my house tomorrow! ;)
Another awesome vid. Have you ever considered making a don't do or avoid video? Thanks!
+Vashone Hudgins Awesome idea, stay tuned! Thanks for the inspiration - we love it.

😂🤣😂 Sheri!
Good sleep is important. I think the Elation was the only uncomfortable mattress I've had, I couldn't sleep after 2 nights. I asked, and they put a duvet on it, which helped. I saw a lot of mattresses being switched around through the hallways, so I'm not sure what's going on. Our Carnival Victory cruise was comfy. Maybe because the Elation is the least updated fantasy ship, now in Jacksonville, it's less lucrative to spend money on...
+thejokerspeaks I'm glad they were able to help you, at least a bit. What ever happened to cruise lines having those egg crate pad things? Are they replacing all of carnivals mattresses? Did I read that somewhere?
the most exciting and amazing part of a cruise is to disconnect and put phone on airplane mode. that is wonderful, being out in middle of ocean, with nothing around you but water and no phone or a care in the world! It makes me sad when I see people on there phones a lot because I'm like there's so much to do, enjoy your soundings, the cruise will be over in no time and life will go back to busy and chaotic in not time, so relax and unplug is my mato!
LMBO! Definitely sounds like Sarah Palin in your Sheri Granny voice!
Dramamine not only helps with seasickness but it also makes you drowsy. On my first cruise on the Carnival Inspiration in October 2013, I took some Dramamine after I began feeling nauseous and I fell asleep really fast the night of sail away from Long Beach when I went to bed that night. When we were on the bus tour at Catalina Island the next day, I was falling asleep since I had taken some Dramamine before going ashore. But luckily I drank a Coca Cola ashore to jumpstart my system.
Hi Sheri '
On my first Cruise I was pretty nervous
Haha great tips!
+planedudea380 thank u!
Short tip: Ear plugs
I sleep with a simple sound machine. The white noise drowns out everything else. I will be taking it on my Liberty of The Seas July 3 cruise.
+Anthony Forte I love this tip! Does it take up a lot of space?
I work on the Carnival Legend as a photographer I sleep like a baby in my pitch black dark room.
LOVE GRAMDMA SHERI
Good video and funny.... Oh dear...
"you got your instaGRAM right here" hahahahahaha! that was great!!
+Diablomom 71 My hubby gets all the credit for that one! Lol!!
Im going on Liberty of the Seas with my future wife in July. Cant wait!!!
+Dee Davinci awesome! You'll have a wonderful trip. Be flexible, July is hurricane season :-)
July 23 I hope it goes well. No hurricanes
I request an egg crate from my stateroom attendant since the beds are usually too hard for me. I actually sleep better on a cruise ship than I do in a hotel.
awesome tip!
also fwd cabins are great at rocking makes me sleep like a baby
+I was Here haha, so true!
CruiseTipsTV need to pack for a 4 month trip around the world. what do i take
Do You think you'll do a liberty of seas, new renovated tour?
+Ava Balltrip not in the immediate future Ava, but it's on the dream list!!
Bring a small fan to drown out any noise
A good strong drink helps me sleep
I sleep with a fan every night. Can I bring my fan with me. I need the noise the fan makes.
Can you do video on cruise line vs cruise line:)
+Wayne Sheng Great idea. We've been trying to dream up a way to do this... We will keep it on the wish list.
Thanks for the suggestion :-)
A few drops of lavender oil on my pillow puts me into a restful sleep.
My grandmother is the total opposite!
It's a little ridiculous but I carry my knitted blanket. It's my own sleeping pill
Not for the whole cruise but get above deck 6 or so to hopefully get away from the last night luggage moving and stuff down below. Then hope for nice neighbors who don't pack at 1am slamming there doors and dressers and anything else they can think of.
Excellent tips!
i like to bring a pair of earplugs because when i share a cabin their is always someone that snores
Does Granny have any advice on how I can get a girl on a cruise 😀
I'm the opposite if i eat i get sleepy like a baby,if i'm still hungry i can't sleep.
+l harrison haha, that's true!
Do you have any tips for people who work the graveyard shift? Its hard for me to fall asleep at home on my nights off with little sleep let alone in a new unfamiliar place.
I'm sorry, I'm not an expert on this, but I hope you are able to find some experts that can make it easier for you. Graveyard must be tough!
I prefer the graveyard shift. It is a calmer atmosphere. Less people and no bosses around. I'm hoping to be able to take off work a few days early to change my sleeping schedule.
tannjewl, my husband works odd hours, a lot! I use aluminum foil on the windows and a fan to keep the noise down. Sheri, You can even get a fan app that uses no internet for a cruise!
Ambien. Love it!
Ambien and 1/2 of a light beer, baby! Seriously. I can sleep sitting up in coach from LAX to LHR with an Ambien and a 1/2 serving of beer.
Hi Sheri,
You are really funny, hahahaahauhauahahahhahahjhhahahahshshhahaahhaha
I have a habit of reading and then falling asleep with the light on, which can be extremely annoying for my cruise companions. Your life partner might not mind leaning over and turning the light off, but one friend said she felt very awkward about looming over me in the middle of the night. Some cabins have small individual bedside reading lights, so it's not such a problem; otherwise, sleeping masks could be a solution if the reader really can't kick the habit for the duration of the cruise. But do try your best to be courteous, and turn the lights out if you're the last to bed.
Here's an extra tip
Awesome tip!
hahaha, Insta Grammy is funny. Look at how many views you have! WTG :)
Haha, this is an oldie!
i sleep like a baby in rooms where you can feel the rocking
I always seem to sleep great on a cruise........
+Jay King So do I! It's the rocking of the ship, I sleep longer and better than at home, for sure :-)
Not gonna lie granny is really cute lol
Hah! Thanks! I'll bring her back someday.
Funny granme
+Great Grace :-)
+Great Grace I forgot to mention, your capsule wardrobe episode is coming soon. it's being edited and will take a few weeks as my hubby has a lot in the queue these days! Let me know what you think. We're new to the concept.
