Thats because put simply you can't. If you could I guarantee they would have a single button to do it. Unless ist a vector file or similar you cant upscale or downscale it. What he did was just touch up her face by using blur and a high gloss overpass etc. Basically he touched up her skin.
Because it's impossible. In order for that to be possible your photoshop or whatever program used must go back in time and recapture that very photo to retrieve the missing details that's been lost in the low quality photo. And that's impossible

Thanks! Worked really well for an abstract background I made in photoshop. A little blurry is fine because my image wasn't initially made for huge prints. At least now the pixels won't be as visible. Keep 'em coming!

This is just bloating up the resolution with a bit of enhancement of details. Even with a lot of work, this might be enough for screens but you can't make a high-res image out of a low-res image. This is nowhere near High-Quality images and details will always seem a bit blurry, because, well, THEY ARE!

Would y'all get off the music criticism. This work is really good and the information is better than others I've read. I am asked to try to cleanup pics from peoples cell phones and these methods are the best. If you want more details, just don't punch in the high numbers.

I've seen the same technique but with blending mode either vivid or pin light - the High Pass stands up way better. Additionally - making the final two layers smart objects gives you freedom adjusting the effects later on. I'm rather disappointed - expected more, sorry :)
Great stuff! For some reason have never been able to work on Photoshop so I would rather go for DIY tools to fix the pictures in bulk. One such tool I recently came across is Stellar photo repair.

you worked so good and hard but sorry to say that a low quality or pixelated image can not be converted in to a high resolution image as it had already been lost all the required details which can not be restored by any mean although you can create required texture artificially but original hi-res is incomparable :)

So you're not increasing the quality of the photo. You just increase the amount of pixels without bringing back any details, which is quite different. You can't find back the details in the eyes of Kiera. Her skin looks over retouched. It looks more like a realistic painting than a high quality photo. It's not a question of what you're doing, but more a question of how you call it.

i get your point m.h. george and i seek to understand why you did each thing you did. all you did was say go here drop this etc. we would like to know why you are doing what you are doing. for example; why did you go to the gray layer? what was the blur for? etc. it would be nice if you explained why you are doing what you are doing like a school teacher if you will. we need context as well as the tid bits we pick up from your understanding.

Your sound levels are all over the place. I find myself constantly adjusting just for sound ... too loud and then too low. That's frustrating, but the video instruction is good. Music is too loud throughout and very distracting.

In future there will be an intelligent function added which will extract the missing details from other photographs and implant it in your photograph fully automaticly. Just wait 10-20 Years. But even that will not improve the photograph but rather change it to something else.

Hey! When i change the resolution for 300, it also changes the height and width...however I want the picture to be 1080 pixels x 1350 pixels with 300 resolution...Is that possible? My picture needs to be 1080 x 1350 because its for instagram feed and the original photo (that was taken with a cannon camera) has a differente size. When i changed the original size to 1080 x 1350, it lost quality and if you zoom the picture you can see the pixels...What should I do?

Well, a low resolution image will never become a HD image. Any software is able to increase the resolution of a picture, but it won't increase details as skin texture. The before/after difference here is that we won't see pixels anymore while zooming, but instead of that we will see blur effect : in fact this replace pixel by blur. I think the topic doesn't have the good name : maybee you should rename it "depixelate a photo" but the way you did it is not true. Peace

There's plugins for that some are free and some others are not so expensive and it made a better work and faster. Still if the photo is too low at size or resolution, there's no miracle. Take good photos and you will lost less time. Just my opinion...

Well, you can try to enhance a low resolution photo but you will never be able to achieve a high resolution because there is a lot of information missing in that photo that can't be added later on. Otherwise why botter taking 12MP photos if you could achieve the same quality with 5MP ;-)
