Fieldsports Britain - Should We Shoot Running Deer?

  • We are shooting fast moving deer in this week's episode. Do you want to see driven big game hunting in the UK? Or do you like your deer to stand still? Roy Lupton shoots some spectacular running animals as he weighs up the arguments for and against. They try driven muntjac days with the experts from Aimpoint in woodland in the South-East of England. Meanwhile, Orkney has seen a greylag goose boom that's attracting gooseshooters from all over the world. Local goose guide Steve Rogers takes a party out from a London gun club. We are giving away a £1,000 Kite Optics scope and a £600 Aimpoint rifle sight, so you have to watch it for those. There's the Fieldsports Channel News Stump and Hunting CZcams, completing a bumper episode of #FieldsportsBritain

    this is a simple question, no different than "should i shoot a deer at 500 yards". The answer is - if you have done it in practice and you are 100% successful in practice over 10 consecutive shots, under the same conditions (weather, shooting position etc) then yes. else absolutely not. Its all about have you taken this shot before and you have no reasonable doubt you can. heck some people shouldnt be allowed to shoot a stationary deer at 50 yards if they havent practiced

    During our driven hunts we also wore blaze orange. It’s doesn’t scare the game unless you move and it’s looking at you then it will spoke. So we stay still as much as we can and stand behind a tree or in some brush. But most game in the woods can’t see very many colors especially blaze orange. White tail deer can only see black and white. It’s the movement and smell where they have their best defense.

    Loved the segment on goose and duck hunting in the Orkneys. With a resident population of 12,000-15,000 geese, should be great shooting year-round. That many could be considered as pests. BTW, KiteOptics.com

    I prefer stationery shots for the simple reason I have never had the opportunity to practice running quarry I am comfortable with stationery shots. If I had a running range near me I would use it a lot as it's something I would really like to do. But like everything else you need to practice preferably on paper till you are 100% confident

    Just like any other shooting ,,,, the right time , clear shot and a shot you know has a back stop ,,,, reasonable hunter knows this and sometimes get in a hurry or from excitement but remember your brother could be on the other side of a fence line ?? Not everyone should shoot that way .Be smart be safe 👍🏻👍🏻Love ya brothers and sisters ..... love the camera aim point wow ... I bought one of the first aim points when they cam out and still have it . I would love to have a pair of those deer too

    Very interesting and entertaining show again. On the driven/nudgedgentlythroughthewoodstowherevertheyfeellikegoing muntjac shooting, I have no problem with it whatsoever. If it is done safely and the animals are treated with the respect they deserve. I liked the fact that the animals were not being driven at speed but were being nudged gently. We could do this with roe and fallow if they are considered a nuisance to forest management or agriculture. If you prepare and have your high seats set up, even if the base is only 4 feet (1.1m) off the ground, it all works for me. Gently nudged gives more opportunity for a stationary shot. I can't see what there would be to object to.
    Orkney looks lots of fun and brought back memories of my uncle's place on the sound of Jura, opposite Islay with 3,000 brent geese coming to visit. The only problem is you can't shoot them so you have to scare them. He used to say 6 geese eat as much as 1 sheep in a day. By this measure, they have a problem on Orkney.

    It takes the skill and, in my opinion, fun out of hunting.
    I enjoy the process; the stalk, tracking and slowly getting into a position in which I can get the perfect shot. I enjoy going out for the day, hoping to get the one deer I’ve been looking for, spending hours trying to find it and take a shot.
    I admire the beauty of them; seeing that one prize deer and just saying a grace before shooting it.
    When it’s driven, it’s fast, there’s no time to appreciate the sport or the animal, and it’s too “false”.
    Of course, driven pheasants and such is always good fun. A lot of adrenaline as 200 birds fly 40 feet above you, picking your target and killing it, but again, I don’t see the beauty in the kill.

    Shot most of my kakkar or barking deer with a 375 h&h mag and some with a 458 win mag for obvious reasons. Excellent meat and may be grilled on the day they are shot. In those days bears leopards and tiger could turn up during the beat apart from peacocks and jungle fowl. A small bore rifle would not do.

    You know, here in the USA we’ve driven deer and hogs for hundreds of years and it’s perfectly safe if everyone knows where the other people are. The shooters and the drivers always gets together and talks about what person will be where and how the driver will be coming through the woods. Most of the time we use one driver person with a couple of good trained hounds and it works really well. We’re never had any accidents in my time on driven hunts and I’ve been in the woods since I was seven years old and knew and was taught by my father and grandfather how to be safe and never shoot towards another stander or driver. We normally use shotguns most of the time in thick areas with buckshot. But in wide open areas we use rifles with open sites and sometimes with a scope or red dot. It’s really safe if everyone knows what and where everyone is. It’s a well planned hunt and that’s why it’s been so safe. And another thing we never did was leave our shooting stand until the drive was over. This is where people get hurt. Leaving a shooting area while the driver is still working the woods is a no no. If we shoot any animals we wait till the driver has finished and then we check for blood and watch what way the hot deer went. Some times we have to use a tracker dog and we always find our animals. Enjoy this way of hunting and be safe.

    great show. Driven large game needs to be done carefully but could be useful for managing deer numbers in large forestry blocks. Think we would need qualifications to ensure proficiency prior to being let loose.

    • @colinjohnston5465
      @colinjohnston5465 Před 5 lety

      Are you thinking of an addendum to a DSC1 type qualification. So, you have a general stalking qualification with a strap on for driven game? I think if made that compulsory in the UK you would limit demand and kill the opportunity dead and potentially remove a deer or boar management tool which you and I agree is a useful addition to the armoury.
      A day's training the day before showing the gun can make the minimum required standard on a running boar type target might be an option.

    @Peregrine369 Před 5 lety +2

    I can't speak for the UK, but in the U.S we do deer drives where it is legal and shots are often taken on running or moving deer. Of course, safety is the biggest concern and I assume the population density of Britain may make it difficult to shoot a small, running deer with a safe backstop. That being said, in some states, people are allowed to use buckshot while hunting driven deer, making a lethal shot more likely than a rifle, while also decreasing the risk of over penetration and the risk of a projectile flying to far. I'm sure the regulations limit what you are capable of doing ethically, but a rifle at a close distance with a low power optic is probably fine, safe, and ethical for this kind of hunting.

    • @fieldsportstv
      @fieldsportstv  Před 5 lety

      Thanks for this. Do you find there's wounding with buckshot? / Charlie

    • @Peregrine369
      @Peregrine369 Před 5 lety

      I personally have never hunted deer with buckshot, as it is illegal to use for deer where I hunt. However, I have seen examples of it on several occasions via footage from other states. Shots on deer with buckshot are usually very close (no more that 45-50 meters). The knock-down power is not as good as a rifle when it comes to white tailed deer. However, when hunting smaller species like coyote, they are almost always dead where they stand. That being said, I don't think I would personally hunt with buckshot for larger deer species if I did not want to track it after shooting it. But for smaller animals, like muntjac, I could see it being a very quick and humane method of hunting.

    • @colinjohnston5465
      @colinjohnston5465 Před 5 lety

      @@Peregrine369 is it actually buckshot or a slug that is used? I can see a slug being effective but not a shotgun cartridge and I would have thought at 50m it wouldn't have the required energy to do much other than injure the animal. When skinning out rifle shot deer in the UK you occasionally find deer with lead shotgun pellets under their skin which is usually a sign that a poacher has tried to drop a deer but in reality has only injured an animal, causing unnecessary suffering, for no good reason.

    • @Peregrine369
      @Peregrine369 Před 5 lety +1

      I am certain that it is buckshot. I took my first deer with a sabot slug from a rifled 12 bore. Buckshot is used in some areas in the U.S. for deer. I've seen deer drop very quickly from close ranged shots. The shot used is usually 00 buckshot and often time magnum loads with much more gunpowder are used. I don't necessarily trust it as much as slugs or rifles for large animals. Though against a smaller species buckshot works beautifully. Hence why I could see it being used for muntjac but not for fallow deer. Also keep in mind that in the U.S it is considered appropriate in many places to shoot a deer multiple times if it begins to run after an initial shot, and that shots to the base of the neck are also considered ethical as long as the hunter is confident in their ability.

    KiteOptics.com. Always good to see wildfowling featured on the show guys. Especially geese. I'm not a fan of driven deer. The nut behind the butt only has a split second to assess shot placement and safe backstop. It's hard to beat a stalk where you have to work hard to get within a sensible range of a stationary deer. When you make the shot and fill the freezer it feels like you earned it. Anyway that's just my opinion. I'm sure others who have had the chance to try driven stalking may disagree.

    There is something quite magical about a skillful solo stalk into a deer unaware of your approach, followed by the rehearsed transition to being shot-ready, and finally the stalk completion. A driven hunt is something other than that. Doubtless it has its appeal and, if hunters are competent, go ahead. My concerns would be: If any land is driven repeatedly then the deer there will become very wary and far harder to stalk by traditional methods. And there is a welfare issue too: ambushing a deer whilst it is going about its business oblivious of the impending coup de grâce does not cause it stress prior to grassing. Being chased for half an hour before the shot must surely do that. Farmers are unhappy when dogs chase pregnant sheep because they can miscarry. How is chasing a pregnant Muntjack different? At minimum, if the UK adopts driven hunting as a neccessary tool for some environments, then let there be a limited number of days per annum when that can happen. Akin to the Spanish Monteria model.

    I believe that I will stick to having deer at a stand still before a shot. not against shooters that train and can prove they can carry this out but how do you control it.

    Hmm, I'm slightly uncomfortable with the idea of driven Deer. In the UK, we tend not to head shoot them because of the risk of injured animals. Not everyone is as good a shot as Roy and lets face it, if we do adopt this practice then there's no way that we're going to get less injured Deer out there. This sort of thing would only benefit the Anti's. Anyway, that's my tuppence worth - I'm sure others will disagree :-)

      hows it different that racing cars - if you have trained for it its ok, if you havent no way. has nothing to do with shooting ... do what you know you can and have proven to do in practice. its the idiots who have practiced, dont respect the game ... that take shots they have never taken before

      @@bavariasuhl No different: if we were all trained to drive at 200MPH on the roads, we wouldn't all have crashes. What's the likelyhood that the number of RTA's would increase though?
      Look at it another way, I'm a pretty good shot with my .17HMR and I reckon I can hit a Crow at 100m every time. Why then don't I shoot that Crow in a tree with no safe backstop? I'm trained to hit it and I PROBABLY will but there's a chance that I'll miss and that's a chance I don't want to take.
      In any case, we're all going to have a different opinion on this subject and you and I obviously differ. No problem there :-)

      Hi there, I disagree that most deer are headshot in the UK. Heart/lung shots are the most commonly taken and certainly the only shot that are deemed acceptable in the various DSC1 level courses. We certainly take headshots from time to time but I wouldn't call it the UK standard or even a tendency.
      MY tuppence worth on the injuring of deer; for what it's worth: If we set-up the driven day correctly, where every shot is followed up as it is in Germany and Scandinavia, any injured animals would be tracked and quickly dispatched after the drive. Roy's comment regarding training is key. If you have not trained and haven't practiced on "running" targets, you really should not be out there giving driven furred game a go. On one of the previous shows, I think Aimpoint were involved again, Tim Pilbeam was in Sweden and one of the training drills he was introduced to was shooting bolting bunny clays with a rifle.
      Whether I would pay to have a go at driven game in the UK or not is a different matter. Possibly not but I don't see anything wrong with a properly organised, well run in the Teutonic tradition driven furred game day. The problem would be the quick quid brigade that have little or no concern for the animals, have insufficient safety protocols in place, no tracking dogs and just want your money. That really would take a bit of coming back from.

    Kite Optics, com. Inclined to agree with Ryan Darby, let's leave driven deer shooting on the continent, that is until we can be certain that those shooting have the skill to take a clean shot and the ethics to refrain from shooting when the circumstances are not ideal. How many ‘corporate’ guns have you seen taking shots that a true sportsman would never consider?

    I don't think driven shooting is a good idea, mainly due to the safety of beaters and also the ethical issue of wounding, along with a higher chance of meat damage
