Commissioner? God? Not much difference thanks to this NFL rule | Weird Rules

  • If something occurs during an NFL game that is "palpably unfair," the officials can use their judgment to rectify the situation however they see fit, whether it be moving the placement of the ball, awarding points to a team, etc. Should something "extraordinarily" unfair occur, well, the almighty commissioner can step in with powers that no know bounds -- up to and including flipping a game's result or ordering everyone back to the playing field. What in the world could evoke the desire for such drastic measures?

Here's a weird rule: during the 1970s, the A's used to have "designated runners" who never played any position, they would only show up late in the game to be base runners. They'd hire track-and-field stars and only teach them when to attempt to steal a base. Since baseball allows pinch runners, this is not against the rules. But if the game went into extra innings, those runners might have to end up batting, so the practice died off.

Weird Rules Suggestion: In the 1990s, Field Hockey had an arms race between rules writers and stick designers to prevent defenders and goalkeepers using weird shapes with huge surface areas. At one point the rule said that it only had to be able to slide through a 2" ring, leading to designs where the 2" handle zig-zagged back and forth repeatedly....

No, they can't award an arbitrary number of points. The equitable penalty rules (which apply to unfair acts in all the major codes, not just NFL's) allow for the award of a score if a team is deprived of one by an unfair act. So it has to be a score that could've come up in that play. But these "God" decisions are very rare in American and Canadian football. Know where they aren't so rare? Rugby. In rugby the referee can award a score if an illegal act -- really any rules violation -- deprived a team of a "probable" one; in American and Canadian football, it has to be a damn near certainty that they would've scored had it not been for a cheat of a kind that doesn't ordinarily come up in play.

If I remember correctly, after the Patriots kicked their field goal, the Dolphins moved the ball downfield and attempted to kick a field goal. At that point, the Patriots offered to plow a spot for the Dolphins holder to place the ball on dry ground, but Don Shula refused and the kicker missed the attempt.
I don't see how using the snowplow would be "palpably" unfair if the Dolphins came into a situation where they could have had the ground plowed in the exact same way, were offered the opportunity to do so, and just refused to.
I guess if the Dolphins were trying a longer field goal, they could try arguing that the snowplow shouldn't have been used at all, and neither team should have scored, but that's stretching it a little, since using the snowplow in such manner wasn't yet specifically against the rules.

Mark Davis there’s plenty of blown calls, no one is denying that, and everyone understands it’s part of the game, but a call that bad, so obvious should never happen, especially in a game with a trip to the superbowl on the line. Wtf is the ref paid to do? Make calls, and calls that obvious should be called 100% of the time. Worst part of all is that if that call was made, the Saints would’ve run out the clock kicked a field goal and won the game. There’s obviously going to be outrage over that, that call didn’t just hurt the game, it hurt legacy. Bottom line, all NFL fans should be outraged that a blown call that obvious was missed in a championship game. Even a non fan makes that call.

The Patriots went more slick than how they describe the snow plow incident. I'm sure you notice during snow games the out of bounds, end zone lines, and 10 yard lines are cleared constantly. Usually with a leaf blower. This game they had a lawn mower with a plow. A ground keeper is clearing a 10 yard marker but cruises 2 yards away from the yard line to clear a spot for the holder so it made a big bump out on the field from wear he started. The Patriots acted like he just wasn't paying attention
