    1988 was TDK's peak in terms of overall product quality. The '88 SA-X was amazing, as was the '86 MA-X with the blue shell. The AR-X was the best you could get in the Type I range, on a level with the legendary Denon HX4.
    In the early 90's, the SA-XS was pretty much all that was left of TDK's glory. Apart from the MA-XG.

    Always loved TDK tapes. Even the Type I's were reliably good.

    I have one D46 and two D60 of mid-80's. Also I have a D46 of 1988 and a D90 and three D120 of the late 90's - early 2000's. Those one are sealed units. Even a tape of the same model sold in Australia was a design inspired on the classic models of the 70's, but the case design is from late 90's with screws. And a SD46 of 1988 - a good model.

    I like to collect the old tapes too, especially when there are in sealed condition. TDK was my favorite brand and when I was a kid they were usually to expensive for me. I bought the cheapo types at local Woolworth store. There was also the TDK "Maverick" from the early 70s that I believe was of lower quality than the "D" cassettes. I remember buying them in a 3 pack and they came without boxes--just the three tapes in a blister package. Also there was the "AD-S" that I think was similar to the "AR-X" tapes.

    I seem to have an AD-S, and i don’t know if they were made in europe, but the cassette was bought in NO and it’s more rare than the AD-X

      AD-S was for Japan market. Attractive with clear shell and metal label! Nice cassette and I’ve yet to get one!

    In the USA you COULD get the high line TDK Type 1 but you had to either order it by mail or go to one of the metro areas like NYC with the better electronic stores.

    I have a few sealed TDK's (1982 SA60, 1985 D90 at 1:00, 1990 D60, 1997 D90 x4, 1988 AD90 as seen at 2:28 and 1990 AR50)

    There where also TDK A and TDK SD the SD came as a type II and a type I also if the X was used in the TDK range it meant it had a double coating hence eXtra.

      The SA-XS even had a triple coating that got rid of the double coating's only flaw of losing ~1 dB in the 3 kHz range.

    There was another category known as OD (Optimum Dynamic) but was quickly obsolete. Have you tried them ?

    How does an AD-X compare with an AR?

    • @KRAZEEIZATION
      @KRAZEEIZATION  Před 4 lety +1

      It was for the US market and top of the AD range back then. Again similar high end and clear treble for a type 1.
