    I don't think there as dead as you think! Because of the vinyl resurgence, cassette tapes and other analog formats have returned as well! It's a beautiful thing to see!

      Analog Guy I should have been more specific, the dead media was on the bottom shelf. That was your zip drives and your CD-R’s and your mini discs. Certainly tapes are not dead!

    Great stuff. I saw those Onn tapes at Walmart just today, but the j-card was yellow instead of blue.

    I have a small collection of unopened cassettes. Sony HF90 1990 (4:08), Sony EF90 1999, TDK D60 1991, TDK SA60 1982 (type II), and 4x TDK D90 (3 pack plus bonus) from around the early 2000's.

    I’m liking what I see hear with the display and the extras very nice. In Sony’s line you are missing the very famous Metal Master, which was their top of the line tape, expensive then, but ridiculously expensive now. In Tdk line you are missing the Max, Mar, Ma-xg. You are missing Denon’s whole line up, they made great tapes starting with the HD8 and HDM-Metal. In Maxell’s lineup the very expensive Metal Vertex type IV.
    There is also the famous BASF CRE-II and they had a metal tape as well. You are totally right about Memorex, Absolute garbage. I’m not picking on the Denon and BASF because their are others that neither one of us have mentioned, it I’m impressed with what you have displayed.
    Oh don’t forget about DCC-digital cassette tapes. I’m just mentioning some stuff from my collection in addition to what you have shown. Great job here. What deck are you using to play back your tapes on?

      Need that Metal Master, you're right - RIDICULOUSLY expensive.

    I remember trying to find the best sounding tapes for my 4 track multitrack cassette recorder and final mixdown back in the day. I think the Maxell black hi bias tapes always sounded the best. I still use 3.5" floppy disks some to save things on old school harware and just recently got rid of a Mini Disc 8 track recorder. I record on digital equipment now but it's still fun to encorporate some analog stuff in there. occasionally.

    I remember those Panasonic micro-cassettes. Back in the day, my parents had an answering machine that used those tapes. The Memorex tapes with the neon colors also bring back some fond memories. I used to make a lot of mixtapes with those, and a high school classmate made me a mixtape with them of the 1st 2 Guns N' Roses albums. I used quite a few blank cassettes back in the 80's and 90's, and I really miss that format.

    Thank Goodness for Cassettes. Cassettes gave people the ability to record off the radio going back go the 50s. Tape Decks really became great in the 70s when Pioneer, Sony, Nakamichi, Akai, Hitcahi starting making top notch tape decks. In the 80s Tape Decks were amazing from Nakamichi, Tandberg, Revox, Sony ES, JVC, Harmon Kardon, Teac, Aiwa, Denon,

    There is a HF-ES from 86/87 that you don't have! It's got 'Single Crystal Gamma' written on it in blue! It's the top tier Sony Type I and there is a HF-Pro too! Great collection.

      That’s great! Thank you kindly! Cassettes are cool. Sony and TDK are my favorites as they’re probably the best. Maxell after that for build quality. The Sony HF-S is a superb type 1 and my favorite!

    The problem with tapes now they’re aren’t as good as they were back in the 80s early 90s I have my own collection and I’m 18 been collecting since I was 16.I do have the Maxell UR from now they just don’t last long.The rarest thing I probably have are the 80s Sony UX with purple lettering.But I own a Betamax with tapes which I was lucky to find.Since they’re rare

    Do you only have the one BASF Ferro Extra? I've been mainly collecting BASF mainly due to the fact there used to be a BASF plant near Albany, NY

    • @TapeGeek31
      @TapeGeek31  Před 6 lety

      Danika Sidoti I’d LOVE some more BASF’s, but all the ones I find aren’t sealed. I’ve actually only found one other BASF and it was just an older Ferro Extra.

  • @despicabledog

    What is the best quality/sound type II tape for multitrack recording? I heard several contrasting opinions, like Maxell XL-II, BASF Super Chrome, cobalt doped ferric (like That's VX-A). What is your experience?

    • @TapeGeek31
      @TapeGeek31  Před 7 lety +1

      despicabledog I’ve heard the best Type II you can get is what you mentioned - the BASF Super Chrome. I think it’s because back in the day BASF owned the patent for their chrome tapes and nobody else did. I’ve had personal experience with the TDK SA-X though, and it is fantastic. Those would be my top two.

      You're RIGHT! Only reason I said "dead" though is that the major companies like Sony and TDK are no longer producing them. Thank goodness for the two or three companies still producing blanks for up and coming bands and musicians. That's where it's not dead!
