  • Honda have thrown their hat into the Sport Touring segment, once again. Except this time they've converted the Africa Twin into a "do it all". Every major OEM has a bike in this already crowded segment, how will they fair? Let's take a look.

    Just had a test ride yesterday on the DCT model. First time i rode a DCT, had to get used to it at first, did not like the D stetting, shifts up to fast and not down fast enough . But than i tried Sport 1 and 2. Those are good, sometimes flip one gear down if you want to but workes great. Also a handy cruise control. When you get used to it, it offers a very relaxed ride. But if you want it is fast enough. Good screen and i'm 1,69 meters tall (about 5ft6 / 7) and had no problem with the hight of the bike , which is not always the case. All in all a very good bike and i can understand that people like the DCT. I heard that in the Netherlands more than 50% buys it with DCT. And yes it looks better in life than on screen.

      Been riding for years (since 16 yrs old) now at 60 years old can not see using DCT except for maybe the big heavy Gold Wing.
      I have an Africa Twin AS in manual and like the control. So I an wondering about wrong gears at the wrong time _even just a sight mistake with DCT._
      Anyway, if you like DCT, *you* like it.

    I got to test ride one of these last year. It was my first time on any DCT bike and I got used to it really quickly. It was a really nice ride. Did find the throttle a bit snatch at low speeds. Im 5ft6 and 29" legs and its was very manageable. The NT1100 was quite an intimidating when I first saw it but that quickly disappeared. I did find I was hitting the menu buttons instead of the indicators, but I think that is just a muscle memory thing. If I hadnt gone for something from the Italian lakes, the NT1100 would be my second equal choice with the BMW R1250RS.
    Ive seen a few NT1100 in UK and they all seem to be DCT

    Nice review, thanks.
    In many ways the NT is the modern equivalent of my VFR1200X DCT Crosstourer, which also has D, S1, S2 and S3 modes. Its interesting that, just like with the modern NT, in D mode my Crosstourer goes up the gears very quickly and is in top gear at quite low speeds. For that reason I usually ride around in S1, which gives a much better response. I believe all the S modes do is to change where the gears shift, rather than altering engine performance.

    Rumor is for those who go DCT truly a life changing experience for what remains still just two wheels with one drive wheel so great to hear your input. I'm sure in future iterations Honda will figure out how to start saving on the weight, improve both efficiency and drivability even more...entire *"NC"* offering by Honda has both reinvented Honda in all of the right ways but I think just an opinion of course saved "traditional" motorcycling which is only now #interestingly coming under pressure from the likes of Zero Motorcycles and LiveWire #former_Harley
    Hopefully the rest of the Industry takes note as once motorcycling becomes two wheel powered drive well, let's just say huge fan of the Yamaha GTS writing this. Great production value here! Love the camera and sound work!

    I always rode my Africa Twin in manual mode. Its basically ridden as a bike with a quick shifter. You simply chose the gear you want with the up and down paddle shifters. Everyone seems to be missing out by not using this feature.

    • @sinisacumbrek5518
      @sinisacumbrek5518 Před rokem +2

      ...yes, people often overlook this option. I had NC750X with DCT, and after just few days of owning it, I switched to manual mode and never came back to automatic. You are in control (within the boundreys of revs) and shifts are always seamless. Now I have BMW F 750 GS and have to struggle for "perfect shifting", without clunking and jerking (owning a bike just few weeks and it is going better every day, but still not there quite yet). So, DCT defenetly have some advantages. Only downside for someone may be low speed manuvering.

    A little later to this discussion but thought I would add my thoughts. Have watch this and other reviews on this bike I had a test ride of the DCT and really enjoyed the bike and gearbox combination. I also rode with the screen at position 4 from the bottom and also found it wind free at 70mph. I didn’t like D mode, it just seems to get into the highest gear as soon as possible and is probably just a mode to meet emissions standard, once I switched to S1 it was much better. I have since ordered the DCT and my dealer said over 80% are DCT.

    My wife and I are going to Switzerland for 6 weeks and renting the NT1100 but they do rent a manual transmission. Here in the US I have a AT manual, CB500X manual. I had purchased a 2021 but had 1200 miles. I was at a store and Harley riders totally destroyed it. Police here are being defended so the investigation fell flat. My insurance paid for it. Looking at relocating out of country. My wide is Filipina so may go there. Maybe convince to live Switzerland 6 months and 6 months in the Philippines. Enjoyed your review. I have a funny feeling that we may never see this bike in the U.S. Honda’s market share in the U.S. Adventure touring segment is basically limited to the CB 500X. The Africa Twin was supposed to fill the gap but that bike has a much more off-road bias with its long travel suspension. The NC 750X is more of a commuter bike and isn’t great cruising at 75 mph. The VFR 1100X was a huge failure here and I don’t think the dealers want to go through that again. I will be interested if it makes it here but I am not getting my hopes up.

      Biggest difference...hmm...RT is heavier & has a more solid, stable feel, much better suspension & a lot better torque/pull from low RPM, better wind protection and electric adjustable windscreen (which I do adjust all the time while riding, I have 2 settings that I like and each is dependent upon my speed), this to adjust the screen you have to stop and walk around to the front of the bike and manually move it up or down (most screens you can adjust while riding). But this has Apple Carplay & Android Auto, which I would use if I had it on my RT.

      @sunrisejak2709 Před 6 měsíci

      @@edlorenser498Bangkok traffic can be uncomfortable and no fun indeed! 😬However with DCT and Android Auto (music) going through Bangkok can be a bit more tolerable. In traffic it's a bit heavy and stop and go can result in some heat off the engine that fortunately dissipates with a little speed. Outside Bangkok and traveling throughout Thailand it's a complete delight. I now live outside the city in a rural area and when travels require going through Bangkok I try to organize a time very early in the morning to avoid the worst of the traffic and when the air is cooler. 😊 The panniers are a nice trim profile and although they are sized not to fit a helmet they are great for reasonable filtering if needed when touring. Been all over Thailand and with 28,000 km on the clock I'm still very happy. I think this bike might be a long term "keeper" as it's pretty hard to find fault. A competent overall platform. 👍😎

And the gap between the 1800 and (not even) 1100cc is to big. I mean even the old Pan European was a 1300cc. Yamaha has the same problem. Top of the line touring bike from Yam is now a Tracer 900.
