Are Stun Guns Effective? We Tested Some Out!

  • At www.KarateMart.com, we carry a variety of different stun guns and stun batons for self-defense. However, recently we introduced some new models that are more portable and compact. In doing so, many of our customers wanted to know if they are effective as a self-defense weapon. So, I spent some time reviewing the various stun guns we carry and even testing some of them out to see if they are strong enough to fend off an attacker.
    Here are the Stun Guns we highlight in this video:
    1) Stun Gun Keychain: www.karatemart.com/stun-gun-k...
    2) Stun Gun Pen: www.karatemart.com/stun-gun-pen

    The amount of energy delivered in each pulse is measured in joules. By listening to the volume of the snap, and observing the size of the arc, you are doing a nice intuitive relative measure of energy delivery. The very thin, quiet arc is very low energy. The reason why we talk about energy instead of power, if I deliver one watt of power to your arm, then that will just make you slightly warm. Depending on how concentrated that spot is.
    1 watt of power is one joule of energy delivered over the space of one second. If I deliver that one watt of power for a tenth of a second, is still one watt, but now it is only a tenth of a joule.
    But if I deliver one joule of energy in a pulse, and the pulse only lasts 50 milliseconds, that is the equivalent of 200 watts being delivered. Now repeat those pulses at 10th of a second intervals, or 10 pulses per second. That is going to hurt like hell. But it's still only 10 joules over one second.

      A watt is a measure of power which is the same as energy in a unit of time, and in units this is 1 watt of power = 1 joule of energy produced per one second. So 1 joule over 1 second is 1 watts, and is 5 joules produced over 1 second is 5 watts. 1 joule produced over 5 seconds is 0.2 watts. But for stun guns the issue is how much charge is produced per second (intolerable pain produced is said to be caused by 1 microamp = 0.000001 Amps) To get watts, multiply volts x the amps available.

    Extremely informative, seriously people give it up for this guy: not only teaching us about the products but actually TESTING the products on HIMSELF. STANDING OVATION MY MAN. God forbid he ever changes his marketing technique to “I’ll shock myself with the new stun gun 5000 at x number of subscribers!”
    Jokes aside though, very informative, I’m getting a keychain seeing as it’s clearly effective and compact. The sound of the electricity alone seems loud enough to surprise someone into running away. Shock value I’m sure is a big aspect of making attackers think twice. Definitely surprised me when you first set it off lol. Noisy cricket from MIB. Kudos and rock on man 💪🏼💪🏼

    • @Karatemart
      @Karatemart  Před 3 lety +23

      That’s very true Ian. I trained in the martial arts for many years and have taken thousands of punches to the face, and I can say that being stunned by the stun guns was very different. You are absolutely correct that there is no substitute to self-defense training. Stun guns are cool, but knowing how to defend yourself through boxing or the martial arts is equally important. @@enzocrespin5806 Exactly true. Ive actually had to choke hold a couple people in my life for trying to pick fights. The good thing is you don't need to hurt them and they can't hurt you from that position, especially if you've already got them down. You can just whisper in their ear till they calm down haha. Not recommended on someone much larger or with really long arms though.

  • @mrsmithsmith8418
    @mrsmithsmith8418 Před 2 lety +5

    There is two things to remember. The first is that these are meant to be pain compliance self defense tools, the pain and sound will make an attacker break contact. Some, but not all may cause the attacker to lose their balance as well. The second and MOST IMPORTANT, read the instructions. Many of these need to be recharged each month for an hour or whatever the manual says, even if the stun gun was NOT used. There is a few incorrect videos going around showing guys that say it does not do anything or does not even hurt.. The reason is they fake the videos with the stun guns that have NOT been recharged and have low battery voltage just to produce an initial spark in the video to fool people. These are a good self defense option paired with another self defense tool either primary or back up.

    My concern is that I buy a defense tool and it breaks when used or if it drops out of my grip.
    Thanks!

      Thanks Daniel! That’s an excellent concern to have and why I state in so many of my videos that it’s extremely important to learn self-defense techniques in addition to carrying any self defense weapon. For those who aren’t familiar with self-defense, I recommend pepper spray over stun guns. I also really like the hidden blade pepper spray because it has an additional close quarters weapon in case the scenario you described happens. Thanks so much for watching! I really appreciate it!

    I had a buddy Mike that was working for a locksmith. I have a concealed carry and he would pick me up to ride with him when he went to sketchy areas. One such ride was about 1 in the morning to a hole-in-the-wall club and Mike had just purchased a stun gun. They were fairly new back then and this was the first one I'd seen in person. We arrive at the club and I sit in the car with the window down so I can hear everything. The guy is locked out of his car and it takes Mike only a few minutes to open it. As Mike was writing up the bill, the customer says, "What are you going to do if I don't pay you?" Mike pulls out the stun gun and lights it up, and says, "I'm gonna hit you with this". The guy's eyes get wide and he says, "whoa, I was just joking." He proceeds to pay and ask, "would you have hit me that thing?" Mike said, "I would have laid you out in this parking lot." When Mike got back in the car, I said, "I think he was more afraid of that than if I had pulled out the gun." lol

    It's crazy how this thing is just so effective for self defense and id say way better than having knife because if u stab someone with knife on a spot that won't kill them they can keep fighting back for example the shoulder or arm this won't even kill em this simply will give u probably the upper hand advantage but stun guns?This thing will completely scare off the enemy if u try to zap it on the air and not only that if u stun someone with it for around 5 seconds like the video said it's enough to take down someone unconscious probably and even if u don't hold it for 5 seconds this will give more traumatic damage to an opponent than knife they will be scared to continue fighting u once stunned by it

      Thanks so much for watching, David! I really appreciate it! Stun guns are great, but I’m always just a little leery to recommend them for self-defense purposes because some are much stronger than others and if your attacker is on a drug like crystal meth, they may not be as effective. I definitely prefer stun batons that provide you with an additional striking weapon if the stun isn’t enough to take down or deter your attacker. I also highly recommend learning self defense techniques in addition to carrying any weapon. I hope you have an incredible weekend and I really do appreciate your comment.

    What type of stun gun can a person carry to stop an aggressive stray dog attack if a high pitch repeller won't work? For instance if the dog is deaf or is immune to those type of repeller devices. I've seen so many dog attack stories and my son walks to the bus stop for school every morning and sometimes there's a stray dog in the neighborhood. • @Karatemart
      @Karatemart  Před rokem

      That’s an excellent question! I guess the most important thing would be to check your local laws because the last thing you want to do is get in trouble for carrying a self-defense weapon. But for me, I would always choose the weapon I’ve been trained best in. For someone without training, I’d probably suggest pepper spray or the hidden blade pepper spray. But, if it’s between the snake bite stun gun and the brass knuckles, I’d probably choose the snake bite because of its less lethal and deterrent capabilities. I hope that helps! Stun guns are not toys although are non lethal means of self defense, they are attitude adjustment devices that can dissuade uncivilized violent persons to stay quiet without modifying their health state (kill or permanently hurt)

      @@MiguelDeMarchena anything’s a toy if you play with it

      @@RCMPGuythunder For me it was more than a toy or a weapon was a science project and a challenge to craft a stun gun from recycled parts but playing with it is not possible for me because 2 aspects conscience and responsibility, i can't imagine my self hurting or causing pain to others for fun and a weapon for personal defense is only to be used when there is no other solution

      Hi! There is a button on the palm grip, so when you squeeze your hand, it presses the button on your palm. You can see pictures here: www.karatemart.com/snake-bite-stun-gun

      Animals will probably be deterred by irritant like pepper spray but for wolves I'd want a firearm.

      @Karatemart  Před 3 lety +3

      I agree with Duke who also replied to your comment. Pepper spray (or bear spray) is probably the best deterrent.

    It works better to get an amperage meter at harbor freight for 10 bux and not shock u they have to be held on the body not touch u and jump away they have to be connected to the body and held that's why the ones that work are continuously using super short pulses in strobe like stuns or amperage

    when there says "milion volts" it is normally not so powerful, but when there says "kilovolts" you may be 99% sure it's a good one

      Not necessarily good or bad but far more accurate in terms of voltage measurement and realistic advertising. The only thing that is millions or billions of volts would be something like cloud to ground lightning.
