The ULTIMATE Guide For How To De-Power A Miata Steering Rack

- ***IMPORTANT: This method is only confirmed for 1990 - 1995 Miatas. IF you have a later year car, the methods and/or tooling required may be different. Do your research!
***FOR PEOPLE ASKING ABOUT WELDING THE PINION: In this tutorial, I followed the Flyin' Miata writeup in which they don't weld the pinion (making it more DIY friendly). You can take the extra step and have the pinion welded to eliminate any play in the rotary valve. This is also only the confirmed method for 1990-1995 steering racks, later racks may require different methods for disassembly.
I feel like I haven't done a real tech video in a while so here you go! If you have deleted your power steering I highly recommend doing this, it really makes the steering feel better. I'll be documenting a few more chassis upgrades as well along the process of building the engine for the car (which, don't worry, that series will start VERY soon!!!)
Has one of my videos ever motivated you to head into the garage and finish your project or saved you hundreds of dollars in labor? Consider buying me a gallon of E85! www.buymeacoffee.com/carpassion

Watched it all, but I don't have a miata nor need a power steering delete :D

+1 here 👍😀
Me too bro. I own a G35 and a 3000GT GTO. Both have heavy as shit steering already. The G35 is worse lol. At first i thought they had power steering problems. But the previous 3000GT owner told me sport cars have heavy steering because they give better stability at high speed and better accuracy when cornering. So i didn't bother asking about the G35 lol I know it has a 350z rack so it heavy as shit. Btw it might be better for sport driving racing but in parking lots it's a pain lol No your economy car with it light playstation like steering wheel is not a sports car. Talking to you corolla and cavalier owners with wings and muffler deletes lol
same lol
Same except I have a Miata but it’s a base
underrated channel for the quality and work that goes into each video.
Much appreciated!
#fact
TheCarPassionChannel most definitely thank you for your time and efforts
Diego Arteaga agreed! 🙏🏼
i love how the Engineers of Mazda made it so Easy to fix or modify the car! Always have fun working om the miata
You've made me change my mind! Definitely going to do this on myn, just went through a steering class at school where we took apart multiple racks so im relatively confident at doing it!
You got this!
greg b so smart
its the Miata legend himself! Mr.Rice!
You're tutorial videos are top notch. I replaced my water pump, seals and what not, all thanks to your video. Great quality and to the point. Wish your style was more widespread.
I deleted my power steering, this video was super helpful and the car handles like a dream! One thing I would recommend is dialing down the caster when doing this, the same amount of caster you would want with power steering makes it very difficult to steer without it. I have about 3.5 degrees of caster (instead of 5-6 degrees) and it is much easier to steer now and still tracks straight on its own.
The real question is how well does it still counter steer on it's own when you take away that much castor... You want the steering to be able to find center on it's own if you experience oversteer and loose grip of the wheel, You don't always have perfect memory of where to turn towards after the wheel spins out of control from your grip. But with 5+ degrees of castor, you don't have to worry much about it because it will counter steer it self back straight.
greg, your videos are fuckin top notch, so much good info... each one with a dollop internet humor. i dont even own a miata, but these videos are great to watch! keep up the great work
Thanks!
I prob will never do this but watched the vid anyway because it was entertaining. :)
I want to thank you so much for this video. I just picked up a second NA and somebody borked the steering rack really bad. This gives me all the confidence to get in there, pull the rack and disassemble it to see if I can't rebuild it, and if not, at least get a replacement rack to make my steering possible again. I love CZcams and some of the contributors and content creators.
Perfect timing dude! I was planning to do this over the winter but its hard to get a feel for the difficulty level just looking at a forum post. Watching you do it for real and show the details of the process was all I needed to tackle it.
Just did this to my ‘90. Took a little while but I’m happy with the results! Thank you for the excellent tutorial!
Awesome! I have a depowered rack and I totally forgot about this mod, now it's another thing to add to my ever-growing to-do list for the boosted miata - thanks a lot Greg!
Dude I was just thinking about doing this and was like "man I wish Greg would make a vid..."
low and behold! Boom! Here it is.
I love you.
Doing this as soon as I can! I can already tell my power steering is starting to go and I don't want anymore headaches with it.
im deleting power steering now completely and i watched this video before but i never understood it, now that its actually time to do it, it makes so much sense, your video goes into so much detail and i really appreciate it!! really good video!!
I've done this steering rack conversion on an Rx7 FC and a 4th gen Prelude and I have to say it is hands down my favorite "mod". Probably not too much on the Prelude since its a heavier chassis but being able to feel the road helps me to know how to reenact to certain instances.
Cant wait to do this on my Miata when I get it this July!
THANK YOU. I just bought a 91 na6 miata with a serious power steering leak, and as a result the pump was whining like a chihuahua. I found your video, and over the course of a week de-powered the rack with my dad! Now I have manual steering and love the heavy feel of the steering wheel. Amazing video, thank you!!
I love how detailed you are and how you show everything step by step. Earned my sub.
Great video man, perfect pace for an instructional video. Not painfully slow but you still got all the important info. I'll be doing this to my NA soon!
1 of the most informative and quality CZcams channels.
Literallly was just about to do this. Makes it easier having a video to walk me through it. Thanks dude!
perfect timing on this video! Have my turbo and manifold off and have been running my PS lines looped.
I think this just gave me the 'push from the nest' :D
Great tutes dude, I was about to do the loop, but now I'm going for the full delete, top presentation, and no jibber jabber!
Thanks for the video. It takes out the mystery of a project to just see all the steps before jumping in.
Just followed this step by step and completed my rack! Now I just need to reinstall it and I'll be one step closer to getting my Miata back on the road. It's been down for over a year now lol
There are a lot of videos of this prosess on youtube. None of these are any where near as good as this one. Thanks a bunch. Another project for the comming winter. Two thumbs up!
That means a lot, because I always think twice about doing videos that have been done several times already. This probably took me at least 10-12 hours just to make a 14 minute video including filming and editing but I think it came out pretty clean.
This channel is so great. You have prepared me for what seems like everything that I need to know and do when I buy a miata. Love the pop things too lol.
such a awesome video Greg! I really like that you go all technical.. I really learned something and for that I thank you! Keep those videos comming!
The combination of this video and my lack of budget to purchase another depowered rack has given me the confidence to do this myself.
Nice job. I may do this. Thanks for the detail about the difference in ratio between depowered and OEM manual.
Really nice tutorial Greg. Didn't know this was possible. Doesn't look too hard with these detailed instructions, so might be something I can do to my MX-5.
Thanks!
Great video! Will be very helpful in the future. My power steering pump is out at the moment and I was wondering how to do it right and how not to dirt up the whole steering rack. I am pretty sure I will come back to this video a couple of times.
love the technical videos. Have helped on just about everything i've done to my car
dude been so tempted but it is quite tedious glad u made this video it will make it much easier when i go to try it!! u da man
more videos like this please. i love watching tutorials
Quick editing helps a lot on such a long, dirty procedure.. Obvious that you've done it more than a few times, and it shows.. Good job !
I like the new Video set up you got!
some great Tipps and my favorit kind of humor as always :)
Great work Greg! - Keep it up! ... cant wait for the Motor build!
Great Vid, watched it a few times before attempting it and already had a hard time removing the rack. Turns out I missed the *remove bolt completely before and could only move the steering rod out by a few mm, thank you for putting it up!
Such a good video! May tackle this over winter!
A review video on how the driving feels after the change would be cool! Great videos
YESSS!!! Awesome video Greg, always wanted to this but feared something might go wrong (it's still my daily), now with your instructions its an easy task! Thank you so much and keep it up! These type of videos are the BEST HNNG
Yet another great video, man. Once I have another NA in the future, I'll be turning to much of your info first. Thanks!
Great video! By far the best de power video on CZcams. 👌🏼
I like the more technical videos. Also the studio is great. Keep up with the great videos!
Useful vid, a lot more informative than most others on the subject 👍
I followed your directions. The job came out perfect.
Great video as always! I am going to try this with a spare rack that I have.
Very well explained ! Very good video ! Man those miata look so easy to work on, make me want to buy a Miata!!!
technical videos are why i subscribed to this channel
finally! a detailed step by step to depower the steering rack.
Wasn't sure if it was commented already, but based of this video I was able to pull this of on my 95 civic ex. It was a little different on the civic so I had to work around it. However it turned out pretty GREAT ! Was my third rack, was not going to purchase another lol
Thanks sick VID 🤙🏼
Quality video man!! You are an inspiration and it´s why i run a turbo miata :)
i really like the way you showed everything so well i think i can take on that for myself. thank you sir.
i have a mazda B2200 pickup that i am looking to get an update steering on it, this might be it.
Awesome video. I really enjoy handling mods like this
Good video like them all and watch them all keep up the good work man and the videos flowing!!
For someone that your average person wouldn't consider a celebrity. Greg is a celebrity to me and I would be star struck if I met him. I mean he's miata dad bro no denying him. Ive done this several times over the years but i still watch this every time I do
thumbs up, very few ppl depower the right way and you sir are one of them, I just wish you mentioned the bit about welding the spool valve in the pinion,,, nice vid.
Man you've been such a big help for me. I'm doing this today and hopefully I'll get it right lol jkjk but I like how detailed you are brother
great video, i welded the pinon when i did mine to eliminate the slop thats built in to the pinon. Use steel putty in the holes and add a couple grease zerts close to the pinon
think I'll do it this weekend, thanks Greg 👍
Update! This video is awesome!
don't have a Miata but, but I'm gonna do this to my Honda. Super good video man keep it up!!
awesome info dude! I was going to transfer the manual rack from my donor car as mine is power steering, but now I'll do this instead!
Just did this today. Guide really helpful , as always.
Nice video, Man! Just what I was looking for! Will try to pull this steering rack trick on my trackday Volvo 850 :D Thanks!
This video helped me so much! I just got it done on my car. :)
glad I watched this. did mine a while ago and just threw everything back on. didn't know I had to torque that tension bolt thing like that..
Very detail and informative wish there was a RX7s site like this
That's a cracking video dude, doing it now with a bud of mine
hell of a tutorial. gonna have to give this a shot now.
This helps me a lot. Thanks
great vid. trying this on a camaro build
I love your videos man they just keep getting better.
Sour cream on a taco. Classic.
Taking this on right now thanks to this vid. You da man
I had a powered steering MX-5 before, it was fine. But now i got one that didn't have power steering from the factory, so much better! And so much more room in the engine bay!
Removed PS and it is bad ahahah , hopefully this video and a good alignment will make the miata great again, shoutout greg
Greg very impressive and that's coming from a mustang guy with megasquirt ..would like too see you do more tuning videos with megasquirt ...also those maitas look like a lot of fun I may even build after my bracket car is all tuned and track ready .. need a street toy for everyday fun ..
Glad you mentioned the dorifto washers for mad skids yo 👍
I don't have a Miata but that was a really well explained video!
I am SO going to do this when I do my engine swap this Summer. Can’t wait to tell ppl I rebuilt my Miata with bicycle parts! \o/
Greg: great video. But at 10:50, the locking plate needs to be removed and held on the steering rack end so that the tabs inside it engage with the slots in the rack. If not, it's not doing anything to hold the pieces together... Without a locking plate, the inner tie rods can eventually back out of the rack itself. They're not likely to come out because you'd destroy tires from a bad toe setting long before it comes apart. It's better to replace those lock plates, but you can straighten them. Your advice of using lock-tite is spot on. Thanks again!
Have a manual rack in the babe but still watching because your vids are great
Too lazy to swap in a depowered rack. Manual ratio is good enough for what I do
epic tutorial!
yuusssssss! Thanks for the content!!! Much appreciated
Glad i found this video as i am planning on deleting my power steering and going with electric power steering from epower
Good video to this day!
To preserve your alignment, you should just break the jam nut loose just enough to where you can spin the inner tie rod outof the outer. when it's time for install, you just spin the inner into the outer tie rod then tighten the jam nut once it's snug against the outer.
If you have access to more tools like a ball joint press and a tie rod puller you should just remove the outer tie rod with it still connected.
All if your boots are in good shape.
Or just get an alignment.
Cool videos dude.
Awesome vid man, in the middle of depowering mine now
Did it to my rangers rack and pinion. This video taught me what I needed to know lol figured out the rest
Thanks for the info bro
Tbh this guy ain't getting the love he deserves he is so talented I'm planning on building a Naturally aspirated NA miata so I love how in depth your tutorials are much love
Love it may be my next project I have a lazy deporting.
Depowering *
neat work as usual.
I deleted the power steering on my Integra, I just looped the rack with clean fluid in. Feels good for driving but is very stiff when still but you quickly learn how to park/ turn round etc without having to steer while not moving
One of my power steering pipes just split on my mk2 so rather than buy new PAS pipes i'm just gonna de-power the rack so this will definitely come in handy!
did it. would never go back. the power gain is not much, but noticeable.... only thing i would have done different (like i did) is take the inner tie rods off while the rack is still on the car. much easier to do AND you don't have to adjust the inner/outer again. and the adjuster nut doesn't need to removed and then you don't have to readjust it. lastly, you didn't weld the steering shaft, it has slop in it and is way noticeable when reassembled. you will have a dead spot of almost an inch or two in the steering if you don't weld it. cool dog!
Well done vid! Thanks
What a great video!
Thank you Captain Spinny 😃
So tempted to try it... Wish I could try out a Miata with it before I do it to mine though
