    I've made a number of t-shirt quilts and the walking foot makes it so easy to sew your blocks together. I made one for a young boy who had lost his dad. They were all his dad's favorite t-shirts and I used the backs as the backing fabric. The young boy said it felt like he was getting a hug from his dad and he could still smell his dad on them. It made me feel good to be able to give him such wonderful memories. 🥰

    Natalie I made a friend a t-shirt quilt from his Apple shirts. Some of the logos were too close to the neck openings to cut, so I included the neckline in my square. Then I cut a strip of the shirt fabric deep enough and wide enough to fill the neckline up. Finally I stitch Ed along the neck edge to secure that strip, when you sew it to sashing or another t-shirt it’s completely finished and gives a bit of texture and uniqueness to the overall quilt.

    I recently made a quilt for a firefighter that was at the fire in 2007 that claimed the life of 9 firefighters in Charleston, SC. His wife gave me a shirt she wanted to include that was the shirt he had on when he came home wearing it. She said it was the shirt he came home to her safely that day.😢😘

    If you know anyone who crochet, save the backs for them. T-shirt yarn is expensive. Try to keep the shirt in as large a piece as possible. Then make them crochet something for you 😆

He has on old shirt from the '70s with Nebraska Cornhuskers on it. Doesn't fit anymore but I'm not allowed to throw it out. This one can be the first block. Lol.👍🇦🇺

    My favorite lap quilt is a blend of pieces fabric and t-shirts. It was made by a Missouri 4-H Youth Program Assistant (Pat Wood - Lynn County, now retired) as a challenge to use some old 4-H t-shirts (4-H day with the St Luis Rams if that tells how old). I won it in a silent auction. It’s amazing to have focus squares with t-shirts and pieces squares around them. Wish I could share a picture in the comments.

    This kit would have made the T-shirt quilts I have made so much easier. With the leftover material from the shirts I cut them into one inch strips, then sewed them together end to end and crocheted rugs, braided strips together and made placemats and coasters. Just cannot throw any fabric away.

    The question I have - I haven't done a full quilt, but I did once use a t-shirt just as the center block and the heavier inks on the shirt square started to melt off whenever I ironed on the backing/seams - how do you prevent that? Was my iron just turned up too high or is there a trick for it?

    • @domado2011
      @domado2011 Před 2 lety

      Ok, just a few seconds after I posted this, Natalie answered my question in the video - I needed a pressing mat on top of the ink! If anyone else has this question and missed it - she said you could also just lay an extra scrap of tshirt over the ink to protect it from the iron if you don't have a pressing mat. 🙂

(the kit/box that included the backing and binding and batting, and the papers, etc.) It's over an hour long and shows much more details. Like how to use long sleeves with logos, and sports jerseys and how you fill in the empty armholes, etc. I was able to watch it once and wasn't able to start my project unfortunately because I got cancer and had to get my health back this year. @@elizabethboger9424 thank you. I tried making one in a class at my LQS, but the instructor was not very clear in her instructions, so I made a mess of it. The top is now in a plastic bin waiting for the backing and quilting. I am so disgusted with the way it turned out, which is very sad because some of the T-shirts are very special to me. Maybe someday I'll get it out and finish it. It has several places where I had to fill in with backing strips to make it come out even and it looks terrible.

      Carol, I'm sorry you are so discouraged at how it turned out, but maybe the backing strips that you filled in with can be used to embroider (or use fabric markers) key words you like, such as "grace", "joy", "family", etc. Or if it's school or concerts t-shirts, the name of the school, team, teammates, dates attended, band names, etc. Hope you will feel motivated soon to finish and enjoy those tee-shirts in their new format!
