Just as Liz Gilbert said: "Perfectionism is fear in high-heeled shoes". And I'd been so giulty of it for so long before I started my channel! And you know what? My world did not crumble, people didn't start hating and YES I'm embarassed of my past work and in the future I'll be embarassed because of what I'm doing now. But i ain't stopping me! Keep rocking, Marie!!! Keep going for progress, not perfection :)
Great video this week. My son once said "Awesome is better than perfect" . this episode reminds of just that. Great timing as well as I've started contacting companies with a program I'm piloting and it is far from perfect!
Great advice! I agree that You have to start somewhere. That is the best way to improve and get some feedback. As a creative content creator and a new coach I struggle with this sometimes also, but I've grown so much by simply putting myself out there.
This was so wonderful! I think perfectionism is something that holds so many of us back from reaching our full potential. It is truly a sickness! Thanks for another great video! I'll be using #ProgessNotPerfection quite frequently!
I created a whole CZcams Channel around this basic concept. One thing that I struggle with is fighting the feeling that, "I need to be perfect." When looking back at my very first video I cringe... Although I'm early in my journey of creating a business and a life I love, I found that by living in my truth , while learning and progressing, I continue to grow my passion of sharing my truth with others. Lets not look back on our lives and think, "What might have been?"
Progress is Better then Perfection...something I must work on each and everyday...I am my on worst critic and often times hold myself back in all areas of life. This was a needed reminder today...Thanks!
I spent many, many, many years thinking I needed to be perfect in my business and when that changed I found that everything changed for me from the inside out!! Thank you Marie for yet another awesome video, I love your work! ! !
Hey Maire, thank you for your video. I am a grad student and have to create presentational videos for some of my assignments. Just yesterday I found myself endlessly tweaking a new video and finally published it. I will take your advise now on progress, not perfection. Thank you!
Yaaaaaaas this is me! I am just launching my business and E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G is 'delayed' because, err, it's just not 'right' enough yet. Oh brother! I have to remind myself everyday that the cause is bigger than the fear of disappointment...and get my butt in action! I have successfully launched my YT channel, so that's one step in the right direction! Thanks for a great vid, Marie + team! Love your stuff!
My own personal mantra has been, "Strive for Excellence, Not Perfection," and it has served me well. I have never generally liked the words "perfect" or "perfection." We can never be perfect, and why would we want to be?! Perfection is over-rated, annoying, and not necessary. I started my own business three years ago this month, and this non-perfect excellent business owner has more than doubled my sales in three years. Not too shabby! Throw the word perfection out of your personal dictionary, and replace it with "thriving, learning, passion, higher self, and self-actualization."
Very helpful! Right on time, I definitely suffer from this ALL the time, spend hours tweaking something that already works. You are right, I'm procrastinating. I'm actually scared of not being able to handle what's coming next. Thank you SO much for what you do! You've been helping me for over 2 years now. You are awesome!
Gosh I love this! I've just published my first book on self-esteem and confident living. If I had waited until it was "perfect" then I would never have gotten it out there... We can always go back and revise, I've realised that dreams SHOULDN'T wait! So many famous authors have stated that there are still parts of their books they would change. Perfection is overrated. Love your channel Marie! x
I couldn't agree more! I emphasize to my clients the concept of imperfect action. It is so important to go with something and see ways to improve or make it even better!
I can't click the new video that you suggest, maybe put the link in description as well? Thank you for this video!! I love this, it is soo important to me and I need to really understand this in my core, starting to get it for real :) Love and a happy new year to all!!
Needed this!!! I've been so guilty of this in the past! Now my problem is getting the big projects done and getting them out there! It's a terrible way of procrastinating that I'm trying to pull myself out of!
Thank you for creating this video! This is such an important aspect of self-care, that many forget about. I’ve added it to the extensive self-care playlists I curate on my channel 💕
I don't have twitter but I just love all your tweetables Marie 💕 - I definitely relate with this one. Since I am my own boss sometimes it's tough to stop tweaking when you don't have someone to be responsible to for your deadlines - I find myself constantly putting off my deadlines because I want to keep adding and tweaking my work 🙈👎 - I am learning how important it is to have more content than to have perfect content - thank you for this great reminder 🙌
Hey Marie, Thanks a lot for your weekly perfect vids, you are so inspiring and always cheer me up whenever i feel down. Life needs us work hard to get what we want, and you can always give us many perfect advices (and in a warm way! ), but i'm not a native English speaker so sometimes it takes me quite a while to understand your meaning, but I still love every videos you made! Please keep us company for a longer time in the future :)
Perfectionism it sims like me, and OMG sometimes i am so tired of my self, I wonder where and from who i get that. Perfectionism is my weakness definitely. Thanks Mari I need work on that subject
Man do I know the feeling!! This video was awesome! That's right girl!! 😆 But you're totally right. I had to remember this when it came to my logo for my project. I love you!!
I was a cronic perfectionist. Then I read Big Magic, listened to tons of artistic podcasts that point the problems and misconceptions about perfectionism. Feels much better nowadays but I have to be really vigilante about this D:
Haha this intro is the best! Great topic this week Marie & Team! As usual, it's very timely because I just re-launched my CZcams channel. I cringe when I look at the first few videos I made, but I realize they had to be that bad in order for me to step up my game to the next level. If I had never posted them, I wouldn't have had all the lessons along the way. Thanks for another great video!
This can be a tough one because it can take experience to know if what you are working on is good enough yet. For example, if you are building a site for the first time, you may not know if your site is professional enough yet to get the clients you want or if it still looks a bit amateurish. It can be a fine line and a balancing act. But after more experience with creating sites, you have a much better understanding. So a lot of this depends on experience, which also takes time to gain.
Marie, will you please stop reading my mind?! :) I've been working on a new article that talks about perfectionism and boom I see your video on it today! AMEN to progress not perfection. Keep rocking. V
thnx this is really helpful i have been waiting for the good camera to start my CZcams channel but as of u am gonna use my youcam and start. I love your TV
I always set a check-off when I think I',m over-perfecting something. Let's talk about dishes and soap. When I started doing my dishes, I just didn't know how much to clean. I kept on sponging a plate endlessly, not believing that it was perfectly clean. So I decided to just use the sponge thrice on any area and that will surely get anything I needed to clean. Till this day, I don't sponge my dishes more than three rubs a go B| For a blog, I have a checklist of 10 to 12 formatting rules that I go through, and once all of them are met, it's time to publish. You have to take out time to spot the reason behind your perfectionism and see how to tackle it effectively. "Effectively" I said. So you can rest assured that checking off the things you're deciding on will really help you do that task up to the standard that truly resonates with you.
Marie you keep telling us to click the video but when I click it, it doesn't take me to it. I need you to list the video in your description box please.
My boss is a perfectionist in a bad way. I have a history of being the world's worst perfectionist but I've come a long way. My challenge now is dealing with myself dealing with my perfectionist boss.
I really don't know when's the time to push it. I've put some really awful stuff out there and also some stuff that I'm really proud of. I guess it's live and learn, baby! 😁
#heymarie So i have loved your channel, long time. Im totally sharing some of your videos in my facebook hair forum because i think so many stylists being independent feel defeated or unsure of what their next move should be. as small business owners, i think so much of what you talk about it relatable even if its referring to different businesses than our own. Thanks so much!! xoxo
Techniques...hmmm...depends on what way perfectionism is stopping you. The best thing for me so far has been to set a time limit and get things done in a certain time and focus on the completion and intent.
I would just stamp a deadline on it. It's that simple. If you don't have it done by then, oh well. But remember to give yourself a thought-out amount of time for it, including time for at least a few tweaks. Like Marie said, you don't want to put crap out there. lol.
#heymarie Im a 21 year old college student getting ready to head into the big old adult world. I'm scared that I'm not ready and although I know what my goals are: to become a published author, teach young students with disabilities and grow my youtube channel, how do I know I'm giving enough attention to everything while still living my life? Basically: I'm scared I'll never "make" it because I have too much on my plate or I'm going after the wrong things.
Best way to find out is just experiment actually doing all of that. You can easily back off of one of those jobs if it adds too much workload. Good luck!
#butmarrie, your videos ARE perfect. How do you really know, things that you are putting out there are acceptable ( not talking about perfect) and are not trash? I am sure people who publish crap content are not aware of the quality....so how do you know?
thankstofashion feedback, results. How many people actually buy your product or service? How many people don't? And why for both? Why did people buy or not?
It took me 2.5 years to publish my debut ebook #ExtremeBlindDate because of constant tweaking. It wasn't perfect then and it isn't perfect now but now it's published and I'm on to the next one. Couldn't agree more with the advide from Marie #progressnotperfection www.amazon.com/Extreme-Blind-Date-Tanya-Castle-ebook/dp/B01FT9J1G0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1478573380&sr=8-1&keywords=extreme+blind+date#customerReviews
"Nothing kills dreams more than perfection." so true. Perfectionism is a silent killer.
yup! i felt that line too!! like "yikes :/" WE GOT THIS PENELOPE!!!
Just as Liz Gilbert said: "Perfectionism is fear in high-heeled shoes". And I'd been so giulty of it for so long before I started my channel! And you know what? I love this! Keep fighting and keep progressing!

Love the concept! Hope it has been working out for you!
Create Imperfect b
I find that once I do put it out there I'm able to get instant feedback to make new tweaks that would have taken me weeks to think of myself
This has been me for years. Not moving forward trying to learn enough, practice more and being stuck.
Love this! SO agree. It's painful to look back on the embarrassing early work, but I wouldn't be where I am today without it!
Progress is Better then Perfection...something I must work on each and everyday...I am my on worst critic and often times hold myself back in all areas of life. This was a needed reminder today...Thanks!

It's an interesting paradox that putting ourselves out there as is, today, is the only way we can really grow where we want go.
excellent advice, thank you!
My boss is a perfectionist in a bad way. I have a history of being the world's worst perfectionist but I've come a long way. My challenge now is dealing with myself dealing with my perfectionist boss.

Thanks you just what I needed.
Back again to see what I can learn.
Can anyone give some more information on how to deal with perfectionism? Any resources, authors, books, articles, techniques that worked for you?
Techniques...hmmm...depends on what way perfectionism is stopping you. The best thing for me so far has been to set a time limit and get things done in a certain time and focus on the completion and intent.

This is such great advice. Set a deadline and keep it. Then use reactions, responses, and feedback to evolve your ideas from there.
see ya marie
yup
Great life lessons as always! You are so funny in this one lol! Nobody is watching me haha i get it :)
i LOVE your dress
Love u Thank youuuu
ahhhhh love this one! Thank you :)
This is me. I get so mad at myself for being this way.
Perfectionists are born not made. Until you get to high school and college, and it dawns on you, they've created a monster. Thanks.
She's a pretty little bee!

thankstofashion they didn't start perfect, that's what she's saying.
If you make a mistake , it is version 0.1
Enoch Layi lol that's perfect!
Do you think I should have plastic surgery on my left ear? I'm a half chocolate, half white Boston Terrier with big ears.
LOL!!!
That was a good punchline. XD
Buster Brown sure, why not?
❤🙌❤
Dang I wish I could find a woman that thinks like you.. and of course as beautiful, or even half as

Hey Marie, you just loooove fluff, don't you? This could be 21 second video. This is a big topic. Useful Content is king, or queen...
U look so beautiful I have crush🥰 on you
Damn ,she hot
Like that little bit of loose hair strands on your forehead this episode: it isn't perfection, but it doesn't matter...
James Buchanan who's looking at her loose strands of hair? I'm focusing on her message, although she is quite attractive.
