Yes, Anneke is the real deal in every way! The Gathering and their song 'Strange Machines' (1995) is the main reason Floor Jansen got 'into metal' as a teenager. :-)

Singers like Simone Simons, Sharon den Adel, Charlotte Wessels and ofc Floor Jansen all are inspired to make the music they make, by Anneke and her former band The Gathering.
And its obvious why because not only was she one of the first to do this style and make it big, she is one hell of a performer and singer.

    @Immortall1408 Před 4 lety +7

Yes, you are right. She influenced Floor greatly and inspired her by her on-stage behaviour. There are a number of songs on CZcams in which Anneke just sings with a guitar. She was one of the trend-setters in 1990s along with women like Liv Kristine, Tarja Turunen or Sharon den Adel as far as different types of vocals are concerned for different metal genres. I would probably also include in this overview of European metal Amanda Somerville who also had some influence on Floor Jansen or Epica´s Simone Simons as a vocal coach. She also participated in a number of projects as a backing vocalist - heard rather than seen by audiences. However, the problem is that there are not many fan recordings with good audio, but there are some official live recordings with some post-processing applied. I will have to look for some usable ones.
Here are some songs that might be good. I put them in a chronological order.
Amanda Somerville with two other singers - Alone (Rock Meets Classic 2010) - czcams.com/video/pHfqTe-aD9A/video.html (official recording)
Avantasia (Tobias Sammet and Amanda Somerville) - Farewell (2011) - czcams.com/video/mELpmzpT1X4/video.html (official recording)
Amanda Somerville - Point of Safe Return (2011) - czcams.com/video/YBeKH25TSOg/video.html --- this is more of a pop song (fan recording)
Amanda Somerville - A Thousand Suns (2011) - czcams.com/video/muL7fgt-1lI/video.html (fan recording) but I am not so sure about this one, if I had to choose, it would be the following song
Amanda Somerville with her band Trillium - Coward (2012) - czcams.com/video/npave8SWRqQ/video.html (fan recording)
Exit Eden (a super-group that she is a part of with three other singers) - Total Eclipse of the Heart (2017) - czcams.com/video/2m3FQOikNog/video.html (official live recording)
You also wanted to hear something from Marcela Bovio. Here she is singing one of Epica´s songs accompanied only by a piano. Tides of Time - czcams.com/video/iL_P6VBJJH4/video.html

"...what other Anneke's songs I should listen to.." you asked??
Well, that's uh..well pretty hard to advise.. I mean, you have a day job? If so, then take a leave for yourself for at least 6 months.
Because you can listen to one song, but you will be listening that same song over and over again.
    ..and again..
Her repertoire is really, really big. But every song forces you to listen to it more then once, believe me.
Her poetry (while a member of The Gathering) is of an outstanding level.
So yeah, some already suggested "Travel". There are several different performances to be found on the net.
The original one with The Gathering, the one with a Symfonic Orchestra, the one from "25 Years", the one from the DVD in Santiago...
Same song, but each time different and haunting. Dive into it !
But one song is overlooked too easily while being my favourite nr ONE: "My Waking Hour" , also from the "25 Years" concert.
Those lyrics wiil be my epitaph...

I'm sure that was a song she originally did with The Gathering. My favourite from her time with them is "You Learn About It". The official video is good, but there are also versions of her doing it as an acoustic duet with Danny Cavanagh from the band Anathema. Well worth listening to. She's done lots of collaborating with Devin Townsend too, my favourite being Hyperdrive. There is a live video of it - I think you did another song from that show. She sang some tracks with Moonspell which are very good. Other female metal singers? I like Shirley Manson of Garbage, though they are more grungy rock/pop than metal. Saw Amaranthe recently - one female singer, one male on clean vocals and another male on growling death vocals. It works! There's Doro. She's a legend. And my personal favourite female singer for years before I even heard of Nightwish is Skin of Skunk Anansie. She's astonishing. Only singer I've seen belting it out whilst crowd surfing. Enjoy your ride through it all and best of luck with the band. Hope you get to The Netherlands one day :)

For the first symphonic metal band, one must go to the cradle of european music, Italy, and seek Rhapsody of Fire.
Here on record at their most classical: czcams.com/video/lrNnMNrKqQc/video.html
Here live with their most famous song:https: czcams.com/video/bW-R-xOdoGI/video.html

Enjoyed your reaction to yet another great Dutch female metal vocalist, or should I say role model for them all. In case you want to hear more Anneke, and you definitely should, you might enjoy this one with her, Floor Jansen & Marcela Bovio: Ayreon - Valley Of The Queens (Ayreon Universe) czcams.com/video/TbebO5BZi-I/video.html
P.S. They took a poll in the Netherlands asking people who should follow Floor in "Beste Zangers" and Anneke came first.
P.S.S. Came back as Immortal1408 informed me that you've already reacted to "Valley of the Queens", but I think you should react to this instead & also discover yet another great Dutch female vocalists Dianne van Giersbergen (Ex Libris & former Xandria): "Game of Thrones Song" - A tribute to the HBO hit series czcams.com/video/0aaKtlLcAVw/video.html

Dutch metal is not mainstream at all here in Holland. So if you would have lived here, chances are that you would have missed it too. Fortunately, Beste Zangers made Dutch people more aware of the genre, but it really used to be a subculture/underground.
The pronunciation of Vuur is impossible to describe; I don't think that the UU sound exists in the English language.

She reminds me of Joan Baez, although Anneke doesn't lose herself in over the top-singing which Joan Baez could do.

I wonder if you would be willing to react to this audio-only video: czcams.com/video/CCZK-LU1-8I/video.html
This is the song Atupoéma by the Norwegian band The Third And The Mortal, from their debut album in 1994. You can regard this as the pre-history of symphonic metal, along with The Gathering and Anneke in The Netherlands.
Unfortunately, I don't know of any videos of The Third And The Mortal performing this material where the audio quality is high enough to make reaction by a vocal expect be worth-while, which is why I'm submitting the album version.
The singer is Kari Rueslåtten (KAR-ee REW-eh-SLO-ten), who has gone on to have a long solo career after leaving the band in 1995. The band later had different vocalists, and shifted to other genres, before finally disbanding around ten years ago.

Hi Valerie, you do so much different reactions and I have to say, love it. But now I will react to with a recommendation for Anneke who’s a inspiration for a lot of singers in the scene to show you her versatility listen to this please czcams.com/video/FPlE5m6Z02o/video.html Or this czcams.com/video/GReAuHUcRAI/video.html and the the proposal of John Coffman. We dutchies blessed with a lot of world class singers who are so versatile even a small tour through our scene should give you a lot of reaction stuff. You already know Beste Zangers, But take a look at the Ladies of Soul (honoring soul music and musicians. Enjoy and have fun.
