Anneke's vocal range extends way into the infrared, radiating warmth.
Her voice is so mysterious and meditative to me. A VERY unique singer indeed! No strain, no break, just LEGATO for miles!

Interestingly the Gathering is mentioned in the song "Music" on the new Nightwish album. "Come join the gathering and you will leave with a wildflower aftertaste." Tuomas has said it refers to Anneke's influence on Floor (flower in English) and turned her from school to a career in metal music (a wildflower) and formed the band After Forever (the Aftertaste).
@@Weener927 After Forever was the name of Floor's first band. It was formed in 1995, long before After Eternity.

I know it was the Mandilyon tour that inspired Floor, which was in 1995 as well. So time wise it makes sense.
@@jessicakoster2543 As far as I know After Eternity is a Dutch band formed in 2005, about 9 years after Floor formed After Forever. Not sure about the Mandilyon Tour, although it could have been a Gathering tour. It appears to be a misspelling of Mandylion, which has religious connotations.
@@leopendent3291 Interesting. The only After Eternity I could find is a Norwegian band who started in 2004. What do they have to do with the Gathering/Anneke or After Forever/Floor?

@@jessicakoster2543 You are probably right about the band being Norwegian. Just going on memory here. As far as I know they they have zero to do with Floor. They only came up as a result of an answer I gave to a reply to my original comment. That reply has since been deleted and makes my comment seem out of the blue. You are not confused just misdirected. Ask "Dick Raat" to supply the original comment. He was the one that posted the first reply to me with the After Eternity entry.
Having been a fan of Anneke since her early days with The Gathering, it makes me so happy to see people discovering how amazing she is.
I was lucky enough to catch a couple of their shows in Canada and the US when they were touring in support of Home, the last album before Anneke left to pursue her solo career. I got the whole band to sign my guitar strap which was very cool, but meeting Anneke was special; even offstage her joy and energy just permeated everything, such incredible charisma and you just knew it wasn't just a show she was putting on, she was sharing her joy through her gifts. Unforgettable, and one of the reasons why she'll always have a special place in the pantheon for me.
I love this song, but I absolutely adore 'travel' from this band. it moves me to tears every single time.
Anneke lives in my hometown, which is a rather small place. Somehow it's a warm feeling that this voice is so close. Does that sound weird? hahaha!

I was lucky enough to see her live several times. Both with The Gathering and solo... Such a fantastic singer.. Her voice touches you deep inside.

They actually did two shows that day. In the other performance of Travel, Anneke breaks down in tears while singing the end. It's very moving.

The song and Anneke are amazing
The video was fanmade and the band wasn't involved. I remember the first edition was made with a fan audio, then the show was released oficially and the fans asked for permison to use the audio in a better version and voilà! Xenxo did this great job. The band didn't expected the great response of the people, so they didn't recorded this on video with professional equipment. The audience was completly international, people from all over the world traveled to see this great band.
Travel of the same concert is a must!!

The Gathering with Strange Machines was my first encounter with 'alternative metal', if you can call it like that. It's so good to hear also this again.
Yes, this was mesmerizing. I was lucky to be there, wish I could relive that show once again. Also do check out the live version from that show of their later song Paper Waves, in duet with current singer Silje. They brought that song to a new level (of confidence and power, such power 😉🤘🏼).
She has developed from a great singer into an unbelievable singer. She has an amazing voice, and she is my favourite singer of all time. Also. I feel the band performed exceptionally well. It was a masterpiece.

I’ve listen to a handful of performances by this lady… For some reason I’ve never heard her belt all out like this. This is incredible!
For belting Anneke, check her early The Gathering concerts, from the Mandylion era, or in the 'A Noise Severe' concert, or her performances with Devin Townsend Project, concerts 'By a Thread' and 'The Retinal Circus'. She also belts quite powerfully with The Gentle Storm and VuuR. All great. Love her belts. They're of stellar quality to my ears.
My fave Anneke stuff is just her and an acoustic guitar. She's like a human songbird.

What is incredible with her, is that she's even more wonderful in live then in studio. Perfection, with a little bonus of soul.
I love how the climax, the payoff, is not belty but twangy and heady.

I came back after eight months and I definitely understand what the excitement was at the climax better than I did eight months ago, lol. You’re right the energy/emotion was consistent that is what kept the airflow at the same pace, and made us feel engaged at that same level because she was able to convey that level of engagement through her sound.
Look at my channel, I have a lot of Anneke videos, and also an acoustic version of The Gathering song Broken Glass with only Anneke and Frank Boeijen. Her voice is magical there.
Yes, that performance (on MTV was it?) is the most stunning piece of music that I can think of. Specifically when watching their visual expression, their emotional involvement.

So many great albums. I bought them all. A sound relief is a great live album where the heaviness of the music is reduced so can really hear the singing qualities of Anneke.
Try the song Travel; a great song about Mozart. Listen to the studio version to hear all the subtle things you miss in a heavy live concert or pick the version of A Sound Relief.
Love that blissful smile of yours when she does the buildup to the highest note in the song :) i thinl Frank made a small mistake in the ending of that buildup maybe as compared to the cd version

An itty-bitty detail of this presentation that makes it even more commendable is that from 08:20 to 08:43 she was unsure of the lyrics (big The Gathering fan here), and even so managed not to screw up the vocal line. Forgetting the lyrics can be surprisingly distracting, and yet she nailed it. Love this lady!
Really wish I could have been there. TG might have been THE gateway into the underground music that I love today.

Doornroosje translates literally as thornrose, but its the Dutch name for sleeping beauty :) I love Anneke van Giersbergen, hope she comes back soon to Doornroosje!

Doornroosje is meaning "Sleeping beauty" in Dutch
Anneke is both Metal Tinkerbell (per Devin Townsend, she sprinkles magic on his music) and she was/is the vanguard for female dutch metal singers. She inspired Floor and Simone.
You have an embarrassment of riches to pick for your next Anneke performance. You have very young Anneke in early The Gathering, or metal performances with Vuur or The Gentle Storm (produced by Arjen).
Anneke and Sharon den Adel duet Somewhere is a thing of pure acoustic beauty.
Floor's inspiration would have to be a great singer. Let's see if I learned anything from almost two years of watching vocal coaches. Very bright color with a forward placement coming a lot from the mask. A very, very, very slight nasal quality, like a crystal architecture. Dutch female vocalists are the best. Take care.
