Paul Simon and Stevie Wonder with the Dixie Hummingbirds performing "Loves Me Like A Rock" from the Paul Simon & Friends DVD released by Shout! Factory.
Paul Simon. Stevie Wonder. The Dixie Hummingbirds. It doesn't get any more Blessed than this. Amen. I sang this song at my Dear Mother's Homegoing Service.
My favourite Grammy moment was in 1976, when Paul Simon won the Grammy for Best Album with Still Crazy After All These Years. The two years prior (and the following year, too) to his win, Stevie Wonder had taken the honor (for Innervisions, Fulfillingness' First Finale, and Songs In the Key of Life), so when Simon took the stage, amongst his thanks, he jokingly added, "I'd like to thank Stevie Wonder, who didn't release an album this year."
This reminds me of when my son (born in 1970) came to me when Paul Simon's song "Loves me like a rock" came on the radio. He was just 3 and started sing it to me. Oh, my mama loves me, she loves me She get down on her knees and hug me Like she loves me like a rock
To Esperanza243: "The Rock" reference is a religious symbol for a strong unmoving, unchanging thing in the midst of turmoil, like God's love or a rock in the ocean. The song "Rock of Ages, cleft for me" uses the same reference. So if someone "loves you like a rock" it's an unchanging, undying love.
That feeling when you write a song so great and it is being performed by the finest musicians of your generation in major venue, and you have to look humble :-|...
you talk like he is not one of the finest musicians of his generation. 13 Grammy wins and who knows how many nominations I would think anyone would be thrilled to be onstage with Paul Simon.
I love the video !! I love Paul Simon and Stevie Wonder, but I think they would agree with me, the biggest legend on this stage is Ira Tucker, who left home to join the Dixie Hummingbirds in 1938 at the age of 13, His mother cried so he wasn't going to go, but she told him go and better yourself. He's a gospel legend who sung with the Dixie Hummingbirds for 70 years, he has a fantastic voice, as good as any you will hear, and he was around way before rock and roll and R&B, and influenced and paved the way for many many artist to come in all genres, not just gospel.
Man o man!!! I knew the Dixie Hummingbirds and Paul Simon did this. But I just love it with Stevie Wonder being added in there. This is so refreshing. Thanks for posting this ray of sunshine.
Just enjoy the performance of two (okay - 10) musical legends! Paul participates and then sits back just like the proud papa of one of MANY hits that we've lived, loved - and died - to! I'm sure both Paul and Stevie would be honored to perform at Hillary's inauguration!
@@danielbrown7301 Nope. Don't (and didn't) think they would be too honored to perform at that event! And wow - didn't think I'd be called names for complimenting a few legendary artists, but - have at it!
I first heard this song by the original singers, the Dixie Hummingbirds. Then I would hear Paul Simon's version which was incredible. If you're going to cover a song, do it right! And that he did. Now in my golden years, forty years later, I'm blessed to hear this version. Magnifique! Oh,yea: check out the O'Jay's version in the movie, "The Fighting Temptations"...they ROCK! !
Actually, Paul Simon did the original, he wrote the the music and lyrics to "Loves Me like a Rock" (in 1972). It appears on Paul Simon's Grammy winning Album "There Goes Ryhmin' Simon". The Dixie Hummingbirds both provided AWESOME backup vocals on the original AND won a 1974 Grammy of their own (Best Soul Gospel Performance) for their cover version.
I thank you for recommending the o jays . . . I had heard it long ago, but totally forgot about it! I als o highly suggest spending some time in the gospel tent at Nola jazzfest if you happen to make the trip. It's truly inspirational and mind bending, a great thing for your spirit and soul.
Paul wrote the song and recorded it first, with the Dixie Hummingbirds doing the background vocals. They later recorded it and released it as a single.
John Mierzwa Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it! Please put that version on your playlist, it truly deserves to be played and you'll have another version to compare it to!
When I was a little boy And the Devil would call my name I'd say "now who do Who do you think you're fooling?" I'm a consecrated boy Singer in a Sunday choir My mama loves, she loves me She gets down on her knees and hugs me She loves me like a rock She rocks me like the rock of ages And she loves me When I was grown to be a man And the Devil would call my name I'd say "now who do Who do you think you're fooling?" I'm a consummated man I can snatch a little purity My mama loves me, she loves me She gets down on her knees and hugs me She loves me like a rock She rocks me like the rock of ages And she loves me If I was President And the Congress call my name I'd say "who do Who do you think you're fooling?" I've got the Presidential Seal I'm up on the Presidential Podium My mama loves me She loves me She gets down on her knees and hugs me And she loves me like a rock She rocks me like the rock of ages And she loves me She loves me, loves me, loves me, loves me
😄, but Paul Simon is White Done Right! He wrote this soulful song. Stevie and the Dixie Hummingbirds just took it to the next level. Thanks to you all.
The song is partially about Nixon-how no matter how bad he was as an adult he could still try to acquit himself with “but my momma loves me”. So apt that Stevie is singing as he has a couple of songs in scathing criticism of Nixon himself, such as You Haven’t Done Nothing.
The Dixie Hummingbirds were awesome on this on the original "There Goes Rhymin' Simon" and then in we have Stevie Wonder. Paul Simon always said he wrote songs his voice couldn't handle and I guess this is one of them. Funny he is the only one who can still hit those high notes though . . . !
Great performance but I hate when video has the aspect changed to get the fullest picture for the new tvs. Please keep at original aspect and don't crop either!
Gospel is something he's profrssed to love forever, and theres the smsll detail that st it's his song. Edit: it seems i may. Be wrong about who did the song first. What i will say, however, is tjat Stevie wonder killed.
Whats not in this video is that this was a re-start ...the microphone was in the wrong spot for Stevie and the timing was thrown ... so they re did it 😇

Haha great anecdote. Stevie's early 70's run will never be matched. Unreal what that man achieved.
Fabulous. The Dixie Hummingbirds have been going to 80 years. Fantastic. They made this song great.
This reminds me of when my son (born in 1970) came to me when Paul Simon's song "Loves me like a rock" came on the radio.
He was just 3 and started sing it to me.
Oh, my mama loves me, she loves me
She get down on her knees and hug me
Like she loves me like a rock

Ira Tucker is the father of Lynda Laurence who took Cindy Birdsong's place in the Supremes for a couple of years in the early 70s.
