Stevie wonder paul simon and the dixie hummingbirds on the PBS Gershwin tribute to paul simon. funny cause Stevie drops his 'cue card' and has to start the song over.
I love this version with the do over better because it shows how the energy from the first start was great, but then Stevie ramps it up for everyone they followed suit.
It's great to see Stevie having a good sense of humor for a simple error. All the greats have made mistakes. He made the best of it and got on with the great singing and piano playing. Go Stevie and the rest of the players.
Grew up Loving this song!!!! I hadn't heard this in years!!!! Barely remembered the name but made my day to find it on here!!!! I hear this and makes think of my Mom! !!!!! And she did get down on her knees and showed me that she really did love me!!!! Brings back a whole lot of things! !!!! LOVE,IT!!!
I wrote some special words to this song for my Bishop Portee. I sang it myself, talking about phases of his ministry. I sang it acapella. He rocked along to it the tune. It was a highlight for me, to offer up my lyrics and song to him. To honor the Man of God who put the foundation of the Gospel and Word of the Lord Jesus Christ of Nazareth in me!
The old dude is Ira Tucker of the original Dixie Hummingbirds. He and James Walker could really sing. They made some terrific gospel music for years. Walker died first and now Mr. Tucker has also died. Howard Caroll their guitar died recently in a nursing home. I believe he lived to be 91 years old. Maybe checking the history of the group would be beneficial to you Jeni. I have had the privilege of knowing many gospel greats from the past, and have attended many of their concerts.
@@evelynroberts9798 Ira Tucker was not part of the original group. He came into the group in the late 1930s as a young teen. Yes, James Walker could really sing. I liked the group with Beachey Thompson and Paul Owens in it.
That old dude, Ira Tucker was around long before rock and R&B, he was a huge influence for many musicians that came after, so the other two probably wouldnt be there if it wasn't for him
@@rudolphbradshaw6124 No, Paul Simon wrote and performed it in the early 1970s and used the Dixie Hummingbirds as background vocalists. He wanted them to tour with him, but they did not want to go because of their religious beliefs.

I think Stevie screwed up because he knew how much the audience was enjoying the song, so he gave the group a reason to start over and give the fans more.
Stevie did not screw up. In all of his career. He used headphones/earbuds for his cues. One fell out, that’s why he stopped & started over. The true professional……
@@ag052976 Stevie is Blind. There's nothing wrong with his hearing.Even as you say.He covered it up with seeing& not hearing.Very out-standing!!!!!!!!!!
@@barbarawithers4049 I know Stevie is blind. In his Motown days, he was fed words via headphones. Look @ when “Rock” was started, his right ear bud came out. He just missed a cue….
BTW for those who don't know...Stevie has ear pieces that go in his ears which are called monitors which as he says are his "cue cards." My knowledge is just abundance in this because I'm a HUGE fan of Stevie's! :)
listen to the swan silvertones this is were paul simon got the rhythm songs called mary dont you weep paul said they were an influence on him their a great gospel group swan silvertones discovered them in 2018 downloaded nearly all their songs love em
What a gym I hope people are smart enough to preserve this video forever so it can be Revisited again and again and again oh yeah and by the way Young Americans did you notice there was no Prejudice on that stage great song I do believe that was the best rendition of it I've ever heard
The black guys in the background are the original Dixie Hummingbirds, Paul just sang back their song with them in the background. I liked how that old guy, one of the original Dixie Hummingbirds, belted out that song. Enjoying this in 2019. God bless the Dixie Hummingbirds. To be honest I prefer this version and I especially loved how Stevie Wonder sang. Paul Simon should have sat down and leave this to Stevie Wonder and the Dixie Hummingbirds.
Those guys are NOT the original Dixie Hummingbirds. Even Ira Tucker was not original. He joined in the late 1930s. The original guys were long dead at that point.
From Gods Word the Bible: John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.
@manwomanboogie Im sorry but livesociety is right. This song was written by Paul Simon and the Birds were featured on it 1973. This posting is a clip of the gershwin awards and they were honoring the works of paul simon and those works include "Love me like a rock" and thats why the song is being done here. The "Birds"version of the song actually won them a grammy award for best traditional gospel by a group or duo in 1974,but none the less it is a paul simon composition.
I can't believe that people think that he really dropped his cue card. He is blind that was just a joke by Stevie , he simply just forgot the lyrics. That is why the song was started again.

@heckler245 I apologize, i was wrong, here is what i found on Wiki: "From Wikipedia, "Loves Me Like a Rock" is a 1973 song recorded by American singer-songwriter Paul Simon, who also wrote the song which appears on his solo album There Goes Rhymin' Simon. It features background vocals from The Dixie Hummingbirds, a Southern gospel group. The Dixie Hummingbirds were eager to record the song with Simon, and they recorded their own version of the song soon afterward."
@manwomanboogie This song is most definitely a Paul Simon composition. The lyrics are Simon and it's widely considered that it's about President Nixon who was involved in the watergate scandal and was forced to resign. Simon has many collaborations with musicians that showcased different styles including this one where the Hummingbirds did the backing vocal arrangement on their own, but the lyrics and song are always Simon.
@heckler245 Wrong, the Dixie Hummingbirds were around WAY before Paul was. Paul did a cover of it and it just stuck because of how popular he was at the time. RIP Ira, may you be singing God's praises in heaven. I would like to think I'll see you there when I pass on.
Who's listening to the Dixie hummingbird in 2023
Would bring a tear to a blind man.😊
I love the Dixie Hummingbird
3 Legends, 3 of the greatest to ever do it. Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder and Mr. Ira Tucker and the Dixie Hummingbirds. I really enjoyed this.

Loved it it was great down-to-earth good
Yes, you got it! Ira Tucker wasn't on his mark and Stevie graciously blamed it on himself and the que cards in order to honor Paul on his big night.
