    I am so fortunate that I just so happen to find this online. I suffered a near fatal car accident in 1994 when I was in college. It took me almost 2 decades to finish my bachelors degree but I did! Something like this device will be PERFECT for me once I can afford $72.46 a month For two years, which I will begin in September, 2021. I am currently watching this video at 3:40 5 AM because we do not have as many students taking classes during the summer. This allows me to have a lot more free time to stay up till almost 4 AM, but I am so happy that I found this; I can read but reading anything longer than a menu (and I still have trouble reading a menu)- still remains tough for me with the closed head injury TBI of 1994.🤠🤠🤠

      For the price of $1,500 I wish it wouldn’t be so plasticky and cheap looking and feeling. It would have been nice if it was a nice premium metal feel like an iPhone considering the device costs as much and more than a premium phone but this does a whole lot less which makes me feel their price is taking advantage of the blind community who really need something like this.

      If you never seem to finish a book. Maybe reading isn’t your thing and you shouldn’t spend so much money on such a device. Like you say audio books are expensive, ok but they ain’t on the level of this product, that’s for sure. Let’s say the average price for an audiobook is £10 (dunno what currency you use but I cba to convert things, the same principles apply), and that’s being pretty generous - plus on stuff like audible there is subscription services and frequent sales. An orcam read smart costs like £2200 here in the UK, and that’s not even accounting for the costs of physical books you have to purchase. For that price you can buy like 220 audio books, enough to cover you for over 4 years if you’re committed to that one book a week thing. Plus you don’t have that laborious process of scanning every single page and it being read to you in a monotone voice - audiobooks can give you proper voice acting. Like seriously for the purpose you described this product is not worth it for that price, great for visually impaired people but for struggling leisure readers like yourself - audiobooks are a far better and affordable medium.

I do love the time feature it has, though, and how it is hands-free aside from having a free hand to point at the tings you want it to read. I'm still getting used to incorporating the OR Cam into my routine, but I'm so glad this company exists and is making more accessibility devices so it will hopefully be around for many more years to come!

You know the signs for the produce. This signs for the fresh meat. It it just everything is just so awesome. And I do have one more question to ask though. What part of Kentucky are you in? It looks so beautiful and I could hear a train horn in the background. I've just kind of curious. I've been there a million times and where you're at. I don't have a clue. The last place I was was Somerset Kentucky and so that was why I was just curious. That's all well. Like JAWS and other accessible products the prices are outrageous. This is not an inversion but a refining and delivering of existing tech in a way the benefits persons with disabilities so its hard for me to justify paying that much for this. I am mindful of cost for manufacturing hardware devices but I am also mindful of you target market and there must be a way to balance the two

And I didn't have the internet to download books I scanned them in my computer scanner. This is going to be an interesting purchase even though I am reading the ability is better. My reading deficit was due to in school trauma in grade school. Indeed in school child abuse is a thing in the age of 70s and the 1990s. And yes today. But this product will be a interesting reversal I think he did not point it out a computer screen and have it read. He also did not convey if the camera function saves the pictures... I want one those are the only two questions I had about the thing. And I guess I will say they're really ain't no deal breaker it is a matter of coming up with the cash.

      Hello Rin, The older iphones had Augmented Reality Applications. That use the camera to read signs, and translate any language in real time to the display. If you can find one that still is on the app store and runs on modern phones, and reads text outloud. You'd be set! Please allow me to spend some freetime hunting one down for you.

    Great, comprehensive video, Sam. We seem to see similarly. The biggest question I have about something like this is what advantages does this (and other devices for that matter) have over a decent Iphone with Something like Envision AI? (I pick that example because between it and Voice dream scanner seem to be the best OCR apps I've come across. Don't get me wrong, it's fast, the smart reading is actually really cool and I love that it's offline. And that lazer pointer idea is super cool. Another couple questions. First, how precise do you need to be with that pointer? Do you need to go line by line or is it just in the general vacinity of the paragraph? And finally have you tried this to read screens? It seems like apps are getting better at that. I play video games and while I CAN read text, it's a lot of extra work and very slow. So being able to point it at a block of text and take a snapshot would be amazing. Not that I can aford this thing, but it's good info.

    • @OrCam
      @OrCam Před 3 lety +1

      The benefit of OrCam Read is that (unlike with other solutions in the market) you don't have to go line by line to read a specific paragraph. You can just place the pointer at some point within the paragraph, and OrCam Read will read it to you from the beginning of the paragraph.

    • @theblindlife
      @theblindlife  Před 3 lety +2

      I would also add that the benefit is convenience and accuracy. I didn’t show it in the video because of time but I compared it to using an application on a phone and the whole process was much faster and more accurate. That may be a follow up video idea. Yes, I did test it on a computer screen and it worked perfectly. One night I was talking with my wife while she was doing some banking on her computer. I leaned over and snapped a quick picture with the Read. It started reading out all the banking information without any problems. Also, there’s no worry in that situation because the information is off-line. So no chance of banking information getting sent out to the Internet somewhere.

    • @LoneWolfAudio0524
      @LoneWolfAudio0524 Před 3 lety

      The Blind Life Thank you for the reply. That does indeed sound good. I notice at least with Envision AI the retrieval time especially with quick text is pretty fast. Though Orcam also seems quite quick. I do like many of the features of the read. Still not something the likes of me could aford or justify with an Iphone in my posession, but it certainly would be nice in the workplace. It's really awesome the tech is available. Offline is especially useful.

      @LoneWolfAudio0524 Před 3 lety +1

      Also an app that works pretty well for catching buses and trains is Moovit. It works really well so long as the bus has its tracker switched on. It’s a case of sit back until it sends a message to get ready to get off.

      @@lynnenicholson6968 unfortunately I have an Android phone, though i think Seeing AI is being developed for Android.
      I have Sullivan+ on my phone atm, but the text recognition isn't great. I tested it on a book and got gibberish lol.
      I love Moovit! I have a decent amount of sight & don't often get buses I don't know, but when I do, it's amazing to know when I need to get off.

      Zoe Gascoigne Seeing AI has improved since I first downloaded just after it first came out. It used to be mostly gibberish, now it’s occasionally gibberish mostly pretty good. It doesn’t like mixed font styles (which is where the Orcam also slipped up on this video). I regularly pop in my App Store and have a look to see what else is available, simply because I have had apps crash or suddenly decide to update in the middle of using them so I like to have others ready to use. I think my worst trip out was one where as I went to catch the bus home all 3 of my travel apps decided to update at the same time (Moovit, Soundscape, and Lazarillo). I was so glad it was a familiar route and there were a few people at the bus stop to help me catch the correct bus... one person offered to miss his bus to wait for mine. People can be really nice

      I can’t say for sure because I don’t have any trains in my city and not sure if I feel comfortable enough going on a bus right now. However, I did snap a picture of my computer screen and it read everything perfectly.

    I am impressed with that device but wonder about pill bottles and vitamin ingredient lists in very small print? It is very fast indeed as a previous owner of Humanwares Prodigii 1 thatt was slow as a wet weekend and curently own a Connect 12 which is disapointingly slow also and cost $ 5 k AUD$ and not the slightest bit protable so desk top use only but I hate it as I can not set up my iphone using it as it hates reflective screen under the light as it is too bright and slow to read dox of A4.... While I would like the little thing I am almost totally blind and heading to black blind so I depend on my GF to be my reader now or just listen to CZcams or audio books these days but I love my music too... I think that device would have been a life saver for me 10 years ago when I was still working at a JOB but I retired 2012 so yeah...I love tech too .and what it did to make my life doable.
