The object is not to kill someone, it's to bring them to justice.
Also, our police are not automatically given a firearm just because they are police officers.
Only highly trained officers are allowed to carry guns and you must have the right mental attitude and be able to stay calm and in control of yourself under extreme conditions.

The biggest UK nuclear naval base is on the west coast of Scotland and has NATO boats in it.
While the MOD Police guard the nukes there, it is also where 43 Commando Royal Marines is based.
My son was considering joining MOD Police so went on a work experience, and saw the Royal Marines with their green berets. He joined RM instead

If a UK police officer uses live weapons up to lethal, they are put on 'desk duty' and removed from firearms duty. The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) then carries out a review of what happened. Legally, every officer needs to justify every round fired, possibly in a court of law if deemed to have been excessive. That can and has happened if the IPCC decides so, and forwards their findings to the Dept of Justice to look at possible criminal proceedings against the officer.
The MDP also have a Royal Marine Quick Reaction Force (QRF) on Submarine bases like Faslane to call upon if required, who practise this stuff day in, day out.
In a warzone, like you said, we'd put a few rounds through people, (1) to stop the threat (2) possible IED trigger mechanisms (3) likely high on drugs so will keep coming at you (4) adrenaline. These folks don't have that option. I find videos of US police mag dumping on people insane at how they (usually) get away with such escalation of deadly force. I mean, if you're dumping 13 rounds into someone 5ft away, why even bother with the charade of calling an EMT LOL?
Hi Dezz, you can see at least four of these gentlemen all day every day in central London. They provide security at a place called Horse Guards, which is the headquarters of the Household Cavalry. the place is a magnet for tourists who can take a photo stood next to a cavalry trooper on a horse with a drawn sabre.
First... My eldest son is part of the Ministry of Defence Police..
In short the UK military do not have jurisdiction over civilians, so the Ministry of Defence have their own civilian police force (MDP) to bridge the gap.

The US air force have been very busy practicing low level flying around Mach Loop, a valley through the hills of wales, recently.

The only police force that commonly carry firearms is the PSNI due to the sensitive nature of Northern Ireland.
