The instrument Troy is playing are the uilleann pipes, a dry reed type of bagpipe pumped by a bellows under the right elbow instead of blown by the mouth (which is what makes the reeds on those ones wet instead of dry). It is the Irish variant of that instrument and is must closely related to the Scottish lowland bagpipes and the Northumbrian samallpipes. The Irish call their own version of the wet reed instrument the great pipes or war pipes, and they are related to the more familiar Scottish highland bagpipes.
The Uilleann pipes are incredibly complex to play - lore has it that it takes seven ears of listening, 7 years learning a chanter, 7 more on a half-set and another 7 on a full set to be ready to perform - however Troy was already a session musician on them at age 23. He says himself that you need to be ever so slightly mad to play them.
They are played with both hands, one leg, and both elbows (right for the bellows and left for the bag where the pressure is maintained (and changed - higher pressure goes up an octave). The wrist is used to open and close regulators to change key by switching portions on or off. Additionally, pipers have to hand carve their own reeds, as there are not enough needed for anyone to offer them for sale - so every set of pipes sounds subtly different (they have been called the pipers lament for that reason). In amplified performances (as in Nightwish), Troy uses an acoustic pickup cliipped to the pipes. He's played on movie soundtracks, too - the Ridley Scott 2010 production of Robin Hood, for example.
Troy has the rare ability to just pick up almost anything and play it - well. And sing beautifully, either in lead or harmony.
And he is a successful classical composer for orchestra and choir (3 albums in his own name) and a highly regarded record producer. I think any instrument that Tuomas wants to use that they don't already have, Troy would learn in an afternoon - maybe a day for more obscure ones with totally different techniques like the gayageum!
He is the swiss army knife of instrumentalists as Floor is of female vocals.
Known (to me - others may have additional ones) so far, uilleann pipes, Irish whistles both high and low, in a variety of tunings, all forms of guitar, Irish bouzouki, pump organ, aerophone, cittern, mandola, bodhrán, harmonium, keyboards, and probably the boxes they came in! I'm sure I've seen a picture of him somewere behind a drumkit, too, and not just posing.
I'm near Cambridge in the UK.

Troy is playing Uillean Pipes, which are the Irish implementation of bagpipes. Troy is almost entirely self taught on them. One of his main role in the band aside from being another male vocalist is to bring a variety of instruments that he play. Pay attention to him in the songs, he constantly plays different instruments.

Troy is great. And Emppu is a cheeky little bugger. Together they are pure evil.

Isn't folk-metal great?! The Irish Ullieann pipes Troy plays are indeed a relative of Scottish bagpipes. But instead of a mouthpiece to wind the instrument, there is an arm-actuated bellows under Troy's one elbow, which allows his mouth to be free for singing harmonies! They also have a very different drone harmony set up, which doesn't have the discordant sound so many find unpleasant in the Scottish bagpipes. Great reaction, as usual!

  • @davidstephen6753
    @davidstephen6753 Před 3 lety +1

You were close on the pipes - they're not Scottish bagpipes. They are Uilean pipes, also called Irish pipes. The difference is that you blow into bagpipes to make the sound, and with Irish pipes, you squeeze the bag to do it. Troy is also a master of the Irish tin whistle and other ancient Celtic instruments. Check out Greatest Show on Earth and The Islander to hear more.

Hi from the UK. The uilleann pipes are the characteristic national bagpipe of Ireland. Earlier known in English as "union pipes", their current name is a partial translation of the Irish language terms píobaí uilleann, from their method of inflation. They make a great sound and different dynamic to their music. They are extensively used in the hit Irish show "Riverdance". Best wishes.

He plays the Uilleann Pipes (uilleann = (old) Irish for elbow). Unlike the Scottish bagpipe, the Irish variety is not mouth-inflated, but the air is pumped in through a bellows powered by the elbow while the pipes are held on your lap, making it possible for Troy to play and sing at the same time.
As soon as Troy starts playing any of his instruments, a song turns into a typical Celtic Folk. This vibe makes you want to start dancing.
Troy, multi instrumentalist, played the tin whistle, guitar, keyboards, bass guitar, pump organ, bouzouki, cittern, bodhrán, mandola, harmonium, aerophone.

What is interesting here is.. Well, lets start by saying Empuu "lead guitar" is the prankster.. You can see him plotting with Troy at the beginning of the song here... But, about half way thru this song Empuu crosses stage going behind her, as he often does.. But, this time he unplugs Floor's ear piece.. You can see her reaching around behind her back as she is dancing around trying to switch it back on.. And you can see him start to come back, but this time she spots him.. She spins around staring him down the entire way as he passes behind her.. Most people only notice that happening because Floor and Empuu are very close together just then, and the difference in their height is so noticeable.. She is 6'1" without the heals, He is 5'5" so you clearly see her towering over him just then.. He pranks everyone, messing with equipment, switching off mic's, etc.. But, Floor gets him back.. Empuu hates apple juice.. so Floor switches out his beer with apple juice.. Some times you see an unusual cringe reaction as he takes a big swallow of his beer and it's been replaced with apple juice.

That is a form of a bagpipe. It is the Irish version and called a uilleann pipe. It is used quite a bit in Celtic folk music. Troy is the 6th member of Nightwish. You are correct. It is much more emotive musically. It sounds kind of like a cross between a bagpipe and a clarinet or saxophone. This is a taste of Tuomas' love for Celtic/Irish music and the style of an Irish jig. This instrument uses an airbag which is pumped by your elbow to create the wind. Uillean means "elbow" in Gaelic.

Did you notice Empuu pranking Floor? At about 45 secs you can see Empuu talking to Troy, probably telling him what he is going to do. They both have clearly fun. At about 4:00 you see Empuu go behind Floor and turn down the volume or turn off her in-ear monitor. Then she reaches behind her. The funniest part is at about 4:30 when Empuu crosses the stage again. Floor turns around to watch him so he can’t do it again. Here you see the height difference between Floor’s 6’1” in heels and Empuu’s 5’3”. They laugh at each other.
When watching „Ghost River“ you can see Emppu passing Floor with his hands up and waving.
He was „saying“: See, I am doing nothing. This time 😉

Uillean Pipes are the "chamber music" version of the bagpipes. There are still reeds , chanter, and bag, but the air supply to the bag is via a foot pump instead of the breath. Can't march with these, but they have a softer and more mellow sound. Of course, I'm sure Troy has a mike nearby.

I think maybe you were trying to say that Troy's 'pipes' add a Celtic vibe to the music. You have to remember that in the beginning, Tuomas set out to make Progressive Folk music, but ended up with a singer who had a voice to big to be contained in that genre...the rest is history! Enjoying your discovery of Nightwish's music....from Kodiak Island! Cheers all!

There is one loon who runs about disliking all the Floor and NW with Floor videos and reactions because he is delusional and hates Floor, for replacing not Annette who was the previous singer, but Tarja who was the first singer. He really needs help.
I'm located on the Michigan/Wisconsin Border for your "Where Y'all From" query.
Troy's pipes are also called Irish Bag Pipes, but the Ullieann are called such as it is Gael for Elbow. There is a bellows operated by the elbow and the bag under his left arm is filled by it, then he squeezes that like the mouth fill Scottish Bag Pipes (Scots had them too, but they fell out of favor when both were banned by the English Crown. Bag Pipes have more throw and the glommed onto them in defiance). Troy says it helps to be a bit mad (insane) to play them. He also plays Whistles (Tin and Low iirc he uses one in D and one in C for the lows), and uses an E-Bow on an Electric Guitar (the closest thing to a normal instrument he plays) and he has a custom solid body electric Bouzouki (8 stringed mandolin style instrument). He and Tuomas also have a band with Tuomas' wife Johanna Kurkela called Auri, that is more folk sounding.

There's actually one more version of this song out there, from Helsinki in 2018, that I get a kick out of. It is a fan-cam, so not super high quality, but the Floor-Emppu interaction is hilarious. She tries to get him to dance with her at the beginning, and he runs practically offstage trying to "escape" from her. Then throughout the whole song, he backs up or runs every time she gets anywhere near him. czcams.com/video/2kkokEGGclc/video.html

I believe the pipe instrument he's playing is an Uilleann pipe.. which is basically an Irish bagpipe. Like the Finnish bagpipes, they have a much clearer tone like a flute.

Troy and the Irish bagpipes! Or Uilleann pipes. Basically bagpipes without a mouthpiece. Troy has different instruments that give that folky sound. The Irish pipes, the Irish bouzouki and the flute. He also sings and plays the guitar. But I bet you could give the guy anything and he'd make music with it.

Most people are used to seeing and hearing Scottish bagpipes. These are Irish uilleann pipes played under the arm. Nightwish is the only ones who have ever used any version of pipes in which I do not want to stab my ears with a ice pick. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uilleann_pipes

The uilleann: pipes are the characteristic national bagpipe of
Ireland. Earlier known in English as "union pipes", their current name
is a partial translation of the Irish-language term píobaí uilleann,
    from their method of inflation.

It's Uilleann Pipes, aka Irish Bagpipes which differs from the Scottish type not being blown into but instead he has a bellow under his right arm that pumps air into the bag under his left arm. Uilleann is a name that was coined later, Uilleann=Elbow in Irish. This still leaves the pipes dry since there's no moisture blown into it and it also allows the player to sing while playing.
Uilleann is pronounced Illeann so the U is silent. And they're not electric.

Floor dances all over the stage while continuously encouraging the fans to dance, which they do of course. After all it's a royal decree. Also, the audience sings to the band even before the song starts. Virginia here. Check it out. I Want My Tears Back: czcams.com/video/TBOdgxjb0kM/video.html 😀
