    I'm Cape Verdean and I must say, great job! There are some little mistakes but, in general, you nailed it!
    For instance, Cape Verde does not have only 3 volcanoes. The islands are of volcanic origin, therefore, almost every mountain is a volcano. Extinct ones but still volcanoes.
    Those figures in "ethnicity" were data used by the Portuguese in the colonial period. They are not accurate and since the independence there hasn't been any statistics about races. I mean, come on! In a country like Cape Verde how can you know exactly if a person is black, white or mestiço?
    The Guinea-Bissau Creole is indeed similar to Cape Verdean Creole (kinda Portuguese and Spanish are similiar). The culture... mmm... no that much. But Cape Verde was in fact the principal country to help Guinea-Bissau in the political turmoil in the 90's.
    Once again, congrats!

  • @vtonyvicente102
    @vtonyvicente102 Před 5 lety +337

    Hey, so I absolutely love this vid & it's undoubtedly my favorite vid about CV. But being Cape Verdean myself, I think i'm obligated to inform you that it's probably not best you refer to the country or its inhabitants as "Halfrican". I totally get what your getting at & that you mean nothing malicious whatsoever. It's just that cape verde is part of Africa so for that reason alone it's inhabitants should be referred to as African. Yes we're a mixed race nation & I love & am proud to be cape verdean but as you mentioned, most of us borrow alot of cultural traditions from portugal. What's little known is that unfortunately many cape verdeans try ignoring their African heritage all together & in fact will often say that they are just Portuguese. This form of self hate or denial, rather, is only reinforced by false terms like Halfrican. Hope you understand. Thanks again for the informative & powerful vid! Keep em coming please!

      And imagine being North African, your home and your whole culture since the dawn of time has been on the African continent but poeple (your own poeple, foreigners, or other Africans) will never consider it as such simply because you're not "black". As if Africa was supposed to be this homogeneous blob limited in its diversity as opposed to the oh so great Eurasia.

    In France, the most famous Capeverdian national was the singer Cesaria Evora. She was probably the biggest name in what France usually calls "musique du monde", which is a metagenre regrouping pretty much every "exotic" music that is seldom if ever performed by actual French people.

      @abbyamberhere Před 8 lety +21

      +Richardcolu If you're referring to his usage of nautical miles, that unit in particular is actually used by navigators all over the world. Especially its "per-hour" form, which are referred to as "knots"

      @doommagic Před 8 lety +15

      +Adam Smith If that is the case, then when he said 400 nautical miles, that means 460 regular miles or about 740 km. There. Now people know.

    Thanks for sharing the brief on Cape Verde! Many of the Cape Verdeans from around the world are sharing your show. Oh and thank you for not saying the islands were not inhabited prior to colonial powers. No one nation can honestly say they've discovered another. Really enjoyed the upbeat way you told Cabo Verde's story. Respect...
