I think the problem with the ultimate guard not being able to sat closed with the magnets is due to leverage. The heavy deck boxes are far away from the hinge side. If they would have switched the playmat compartment with the card compartment it think it would have a better chance of staying closed.
I have the superhive and I love it! I can bring all my decks with me easily in their boulder cases, and honestly have never faced a situation where it has been turned upside down, so never noticed its lackluster magnets lol
Glad to see a review on Dex protection. I have recently bought the supreme game chest (about 2months ago). I use it to store my 360 card cube single sleeved 225 sleeved basic lands, about 80 sleeved tokens all on the bottom row. The top row I store 2 Edh decks in the trays as well as 2 edh decks in the boulder 100+ cases. With a little left over room for my spin down life counter and dice. It’s a great product. Holds everything but a playmat.
I actually use a classic wine bottle holder box/ casket, which I got from a friend and modified the insides a bit. There are actually some really fancy ones out there and the locks are overall better than most magnets. An upright one for example can house around 2 Satin Towers. For 10-20$ these are a good budget option too.
I've been a huge fan of dex protection for the last 2 years. No issues at all out of their binders or boxes. plus, that red suede is just gorgeous. When you hold some of their product you can instantly tell it's well built and very durable.
What impeccable timing for this video! I was just saying I need more storage as my collection grows and I didn't want to just buy more of the cheap white cardboard boxes or repurposing the boxes from fat packs. Def going with the dex game chest
Hey Prof, you should order a longbox of random sports cards whenever you have to use cards for product testing like that. That way you don't risk your precious decks, extras, or commons.
T4silly , I find it more exciting to watch him risk valuables... It might also be scripted, or those are sleeved commons. Either way, even if it's ironic, I like it more.
I'm pretty sure he tests off screen using cheap cards, and only uses his valuable cards when he's reasonably confident that they won't spill out. Or, in the case of the SuperHive, he knew the Boulders would hold up.
I'm usually not one for old chinese proverbs/saying, but this came to mind when you literally dropped a Boulder on your own foot: "Lift a stone only to drop on one's own feet" It made me smile. Seriously though, thanks for the video. My cube is currently stored in a couple fat packs, and I was looking into other options. This was very helpful!
The main issue I have with using Velcro as a closure is that Velcro wears down over time, as all the loops eventually become torn and the hooks break off. I think most of these boxes, especially the Ultimate Guard, would benefit from using a simple purse or luggage style snap catch or even the rotating hook catch we've seen on other products.
I love dex protection products. I keep all my EDH decks and my main modern deck in a couple of their deck boxes. And they work like a charm. They’re surprisingly sturdy. Even if they don’t always hold up the best cosmetically.
Awesome, I was JUST looking into these exact products and debating on them for both my Cube and my eight commander decks. Was leaning towards the Dex Protection stuff, but now I'm sold. Thanks prof!
Ohh, the velcro sewn into the box is such a good idea!! Cause all the velcro stuff I have tried ever comes off because its glued. Thanks for the video Professor!
I love how you get so nervous when you shake test your cards. And then there was your review of the Legion Vault v2. I bought one after you reviewed it because you were so confident in the box in every way.
i got a SuperHive for my friend last week and it managed to fit their large deckboxes from other brands just fine. and even with her playmat it still fit some (3) of the cheap 2.99 80card deckboxes ontop of the playmat, just running left to right instead of up and down. i was quite happy with it as they had a LARGE collection of decks and it fit them all with the mat
i use the superhive and i guess it depends on how you use it. i use it for modern nights because i have a few modern decks that i always like to take with me. otherwise i have some dice , playmats and a pack of sleeves in it if i wanna draft. i dont really have any problem with it, because im transporting it in a backpack, so the lid cant really come off, but they are indeed a little bit weak, still like it a lot, you just shouldnt throw it around, in the backpack they are fine tho.
1st box was the best. I want a box that can hold individual deck boxes (the real protection of a deck) and I can't imagine a situation that I'm hold the large box upside down or where it would would be shaken like that. (You mention something about the trunk of your car. I would think that's more an issue with your driving. :P ) Solid reviews as always. If you keep making videos I'll keep watching.
Prof Brian!!! I just want to say THANK YOU! I've been quietly watch in your channel since 2013? 2014? Anyways I just want to say how much I enjoy your channel. No need to get bogged down in the swamp with these sad lonely subscribers to hate and childish antics! Anyway. 1st time writing you! Didn't mean to sound like I was blowing smoke? I just respect and appreciate your work! Keep on rocking Professor! Your friend Monty!!
What I want is a "Mega Hive" were it can hold 12 of the the 100+ boulders a space for some tokens and dice tray. That way it can hold a big cube as well as a large commander collection. Also, many many more strong magnets. Thanks Prof..
I have a 720 card cube + 200 basic lands + around 100 tokens + dice. Didn't know Dex made these - got a Creation deck box from Massdrop and love it, so I just might hop on these boxes for the cube. Thanks for the review professor, a pleasure as always!
Love the videos and reviews prof. Spent several years searching for sometime to hold all my commander decks. Eventually my edh group turned me on to a tool box with removable boxes. and I haven't looked back. However thank you for all your hard work.
I love your product reviews they are always a pleasure to watch. Funny sidenote youtube made me watch an AD in the middle of the video and the AD was for heartstone which I found humorous.
I like the idea of Velcro as an alternative to magnets on deck boxes and so on, but back in the day the Velcropads were stuck on with glue and after a while they would come off. Not the same application but the Velcro used on those deck boxes sound like the Velcro strap used on the internal leg channel of my goalie pads. Meaning, that it's like trying to peal a turtle to get the strap off. I'm ok with that.
Velcro? You mean "hook-and-loop" fastening and the like? (This is a reference to one of the Prof's older deck box videos about Ultimate Guard, if you didn't catch that.)
I have been using the Dex Protection Supreme One Rows for several months now, and I have to say, they are my favorite storage solution I’ve found to date. Great quality. One can get about 550 double-sleeved cards in each one. I use a single box for each color, although I wish they would broaden the range a bit. They don’t offer a green box, nor some of the other colors that appear in their binders.
Well i went to my LGS on the weekend and picked u a boulder deckbox (already love it, sleek compact design and sturdy. Does what it needs to do with probably 0 chance of opening without meaning to.) I also gave dragon shield a chance. i usually went with the tried and true ultra pro Matte sleeves, but the dragon shield art sleeves did appeal to me (As all three featured a dragon) so I had to pick between Tanur and Draxis, (Ended up purchasing both, and glad i did. I ended up sleeving my Dragon deck with Tanur as it looks similar to "The ur-dragon" and very happy with the quality of the sleeve. Would rather them not be glossy but that has not proven to be a huge issue (unlike ultra pro i find the deck does not slide around as much despite being brand new sleeves.) So thanks to your videos i made the right purchases.
I received a response from Ultimate Guard about this review. I sent them a message about if they going to do a redesign and make the magnets stronger and got this reply. Hello Matthew, Thank you very much for your message. For the moment there are no plans to offer a SuperHive with stronger magnets. The magnets are working very well in our opinion and you do not regularly turn your case upside down and shake it. We are very keen that in regular use, you won't have any problems regarding the closure of the lid. Thanks again for contacting us.
Thanks for the great content! Getting started with MTG with some friends and about to try out some FNM at our local gamestore once the Challenger decks come out on April 6th. Love your enthusiasm and the work you do for the community. Thanks a ton.
This video saved me money and headache. I needed something for the card kingdom starter cube I purchased (thanks for that recommendation too TCC) and I would have gone with a brand name ultimate guard choice over dex protection had it not been for this review. I am very happy with the "one row" I picked up as it is perfect for this need. I give this review an A+.
I've actually been waiting for this review! I've been holding off on upgrading my Dex Protection One Row to the Ultimate Guard. I'm glad I waited, thanks for the video! I love all your reviews!
I did bought the supreme game case before you made this video and I enjoyed it to the fullest. I do play Cardfight Vanguard and I do have anime art deck boxes that fix those deck boxes perfect but the anime deck boxes is not strong but for show. It does hold all my deck so I can play with different deck. Thank for your honesty and testing on different products.
Great video as always. Still like the hive. I need something that fits boxes, and being able to also put my playmat in, is a bonus. I dont plan on holding it upside down, or anything aside from carrying to/from my car, so the magnet isnt an issue. If there was a halfway option, where it's more secure, but fit boxes, then that would be perfect
It's simple how that smaller company owner made such nice card boxes and ultimate guard can't. Ultimate guard just care about max profit and minimal investment. By the way awesome video, really high quality stress test on your products, were so many other people simply try to hide as much cons as can.
30 years of collecting...and I've tried everything...the best box for my 10,000+ collection is literally a couple white card boxes. "Well. this is for decks...not collections" Fair enough....The best deck box I have found is a Bundle box. It fits 100 double sleeved cards with ease....comes with an additional separate box for tokens or dice...seals nicely...and looks cool. I guess some people just have money to burn. I could buy a $60-$80 deluxe deck box...or buy two bundles that come with deck boxes....each to their own. Crazy to hear the "Buy Singles" Professor slinging superfluous bling.
i love those dex boxes, last week at the madison wisconsin magicfest/grand prix a really nice gentleman gave me a nice $7-$10 deck box for free and it's amazing. sure i'm a little biased but even my friends say it looks to be great quality before i tell them it was free so ye
Hey Prof, I have a 16 deck Pauper library, sleeved and stored individually in 80+ card deck boxes. I am looking for a case to house all 16 of my decks to make transporting it easier. Thanks for what you do and look forward to more.
Been on the fence about the ultimate guard box. I really don't like the space devoted to the playmat rather than deck boxes. The lid coming open is the deal breaker. I've got a rainbow of their 100+ boxes. Will keep looking for something to carry them in. Thank you so much!
Request: re-assess the best sleeves now that KMC claims that the sub par quality was actually impostors posing as KMC and that they went back to their own formula
The supreme game chest has gotten an upgrade. I just purchased one and it seems they now have the same finish on the outside as the DEX protections case and double deck box.
I know he said the Supreme One Row and Game chest from DEX don't hold deck boxes or top loaders, but I have two chests, and I am able to store the top loaders in them, normally, with no issue. I'm tempted to buy a boulder now and see if it fits, because they seemed the same height.
For me, I love my super hive as it lets me take all I need for an event in one large box. Multiple decks, dice, and the playmat. I can slide it into my backpack, and because it’s in the backpack, I’m not worried. When I get home, I can take it out and bring it back to the card room.
While the Supreme Chest looks absolutely beautiful, I think the SuperHive satisfies my needs better. And realistically nobody's gonna be shaking the box like that lol thank you for the great review though!
Thanks for the video, Prof! Your reviews are among my favorite videos on CZcams. Timely as well as I am looking into some larger storage options and had considered the SuperHive. I just wish a company would make a small gaming case like my old Ultra Pro case that can hold five small deck boxes and is slim enough to allow me to fit it, a large binder, and a playmat tube in my small jumper. Nothing I have found matches that 15+ year old Ultra Pro case that I still use to this day because of the compactness :/.
I'm a little bummed by the magnets on the superhive, but I won't be using it to travel very much and it fits exactly what I need at the moment so I'm still going to give it a shot
The magnets on my ultimate guard Arkhive 400+ seem MUCH STRONGER than on the Superhive as shown in the video. After seeing your demonstration I was concerned that my Arkhive would open. It passed the shake/drop test when fully loaded with 4 Boulders each containing 100 double sleeved cards in dragon shields - making it quite heavy.
I’m eager to see Ultimate Guard’s response to this review. IIRC, Ultimate Guard is good about receiving criticism and addressing flaws in future releases.
I like that Dex Supreme Game Chest. I’m mainly interested in having it, if I also had enough of those deck inserts to fill it up for each of my complete decks. Unfortunately getting enough to fill up the game chest would add another $36 Which is okay, until you get to the magnets which adds some hesitation for me
Professor, I have to say the Superhive was an interest to me. Small Standard collection, handfull of decks, lands for draft and extra sleeves, and my Liliana playmat, if the magnets were strong and it came with a shoulder strap I can see a very strong argument for buying it, but unfortunetly they lost my cash after this review. Thanks for the warning!
I have the DEX protection game chest $35 fantastic buy. I like my decks in individual boxes, It's taken a few weeks for me to trust the chest. It's more convenient without the boxes.
Yeah, i saw the Ultimate Guard SuperHive at the LGS yesterday and i too wondered what its purpose really was, given the fact that the top part can not hold cards as it seems intended for a playmat or two. I don't understand why they didn't make it just that much bigger to hold cards as well. That way the tray for dice and such would then also be interchangeable with their (twin) Flip 'n Tray deck cases, which are awesome. The lid not holding under stress is unacceptable to me. Your (generous) C grade should be for caution!
I use a cooler that has a shoulder strap an it carries about 45 decks an use a tackle box for my dice ban counters. Also have another bag for commander decks that holds 8.
Professor i think you should do another more thorugh stress test on the dex merchandise. After week of just sitting tableside with some cards inside, my supreme game chest has shown signs of separation where the red lining is separating from the box itself. The velcro is about the only thing holding up and that will probably worsen with age if the box even makes it
I think I prefer the ultimate guard one personally as it holds a play mat. I might add a velcro strip though. I recon if they swapped the card compartment and put that next to the hinge it would be less likely to pop open.
Honestly I think the concern over the magnets on the Superhive opening up when held upside down is way WAY overblown. It shouldn't be hard to not hold it upside down.
Mr. Moose yeah, my thoughts as well. I have one and couldn’t be happier. I just simply don’t carry it upside down, and if it’s in my trunk and somehow ended upside down, I’d have to say I probably have bigger problems than my cards spilling out
Accidents happen, they can be mitigated with a strong seal. What if someone who does not understand the value of your cards wants to move the box, look at it, whatever? If it locks, he/she will sit down to open it :)
Personally I really like the playmat space in the box. As a newer player that primarily plays commander, I have a backpack full of a bunch of stacked deckboxes and a playmat tube. Having one box to put 4 commander decks, my commander anthology lifecounters, and playmat would actually be waaaaaay easier for me! Bummer the magnets suck...... now I am rethinking it.....
I honestly think that superhive should get a higher rating than a C. But I do understand the magnets issue. As a commander player with alot of decks I appreciate a box to hold playmat, dice and decks. Also like how you can use different options to hold cards in the box as well. Yes you are most likely to hold deck boxes in a bigger deck box so magnets are no worry to me as they will be protected 2x and carried with care or in a bag.
DEX Protection boxes are often available on Massdrop.com for great discounts! Be aware they also sell sleeves, but they are definitely a D in quality. 4/5 of the sleeve packs I got were not tournament legal for various reasons. (See through, tears, wrinkles, splits)
For me, with the Archive, I carry 5 boulders, 2 decks, dice, extra sleeves, and an empty one for any new cards I may get. PLUS A separate thing for my mat. So I'd like something like the Superhive. That way, I can just toss in my lands I use for drafting and always have what I need. I mean, the original Archive by Ultimate Guard you viewed as too big and unnecessary originally too. Later review said you loved it and it was perfect for anal players haha.
Honestly, I think the Ultimate Guard is the best. As someone who plays multiple types of tcgs, the Ultimate Guard Hive is very useful for keeping all of my different decks together in one solid box that I can just put into my game bag and be off. Just my opinion though.
Love your channel man. At first you seemed kinda eh but as time went on, i love learning more and more about magic thru you. Thank alot, u have made me a better player. Id love to see more of u playing games tho.
Thanks for the upload! almost picked up the dex one row but apparently it can’t hold deckboxes (lol what?!) I’ve been using officially licensed Pokémon box sets (expensive) to hold my ultrapros / keep decks separate... Quality content and thorough review as always 💕
Claude Rodrigue Same. Velcro closures don't hold very well after a while, at least in my experience, and if they get dirty then they're impossible to clean properly. I prefer magnets for that reason.
I literally only purchase sleeves, deck boxes, deck cases, and portfolios that have been approved by the professor. Thank you for your reviews!
same, i check his reviews every time i want to buy anything
At this point I'm just watching these to see you shake them.
I think the problem with the ultimate guard not being able to sat closed with the magnets is due to leverage. The heavy deck boxes are far away from the hinge side. If they would have switched the playmat compartment with the card compartment it think it would have a better chance of staying closed.
Not sure if this would actually fix it, but I was thinking the same thing that it could at least heavily mitigate it.
I agree the weight will make it open no matter what. And who would hold there hive upside down?
I’m playing keyforge and I’m looking to buy the hive and divide my decks.
Finally, a box luxurious enough to hold my 600 Clues.
The Professor Dropping his awesome stuff; so we don't drop ours.
Nathanial Miller doing the Lord's work. Thanks Prof!!
I drop awesome stuff every morning and don't film myself...
Nathanial Miller 😂😂😂 so true he was nervous
I've tried nothing and I'm all out of ideas. Professor please help!
Someone PLEASE make a compilation video of the Professor shaking deck boxes and cases 😂😂😂
Ben Yes, with a beat and Autotune.
Lol I see that sliver overlord in the superhive deck box. Clever professor.
Holds everything but a playmat.
Any idea if it is big enough to hold triple-sleeved cards?
I actually use a classic wine bottle holder box/ casket, which I got from a friend and modified the insides a bit. There are actually some really fancy ones out there and the locks are overall better than most magnets.
An upright one for example can house around 2 Satin Towers. For 10-20$ these are a good budget option too.
I'm using a classy olive oil holder. Held 3 olive oil bottles, outside red leather finish, inside soft black clothe. Fits the cards perfectly.
I've been a huge fan of dex protection for the last 2 years. No issues at all out of their binders or boxes. plus, that red suede is just gorgeous. When you hold some of their product you can instantly tell it's well built and very durable.

A. H. Please explain your use of the word 'ironic' here
A. H. it doesnt have to be exciting it has to be informative
solidmasterdante , where appearance is different from reality. I believe this is the more literary use of the word.
9:57 I've never seen someone get so giddy over a deckbox. Love you Prof!
I'm usually not one for old chinese proverbs/saying, but this came to mind when you literally dropped a Boulder on your own foot:
"Lift a stone only to drop on one's own feet"
It made me smile.
Seriously though, thanks for the video. My cube is currently stored in a couple fat packs, and I was looking into other options. This was very helpful!
Ultimate Guard should have put the deck box storage closer to the hinge, would have reduced the torque when upside down.
Your giggle of excitement and joy after the magnets held your EDH decks in place made my day. Thank you sir!

Ultimate Guard, you know, that giant corporation that makes accessories for card games.
Making a custom card cube and I’ll be coming back to this video when I get it printed and sleeved. Thanks Prof!

We are very keen that in regular use, you won't have any problems regarding the closure of the lid.

wow. Now THAT is disappointing...
@9:58 ...that laugh is like delirium of Innistrad. The Professor has transformed into Chuckling Consumer

I actually super like your process and method for product review. It is very thorough.
The Super Hive is GREAT! I can it on my bike and have no problems. I can keep two commander and two modern decks in it for choice. Its a great buy.
Dex and Ultimate Guard have served me well on various products that you have reviewed. Thank you for making these videos Prof.
These are amazing. I am building up my Star Realms, Hero Realms, and Boss Monster sets, and I know at least 2 of these are perfect for them.
I really appreciate that your channel exists.
I'm using the Dex Protection Supreme and I love it. I went with blue, it's not full yet but I'll get there.
Honestly i might consider buying the deck protection game chest to transport my standard and commander deck, some extra sleeves, and dice.
Won a super hive special edition(black/red) at my lgs edh tourny. Its been the greatest thing I've enger gotten from them
30 years of collecting...and I've tried everything...the best box for my 10,000+ collection is literally a couple white card boxes.
"Well. this is for decks...not collections"
Fair enough....The best deck box I have found is a Bundle box.
Hey!! I play Pokémon and your videos have been such help to me!!
Perfect timing Prof I just finished making a cube now I'm looking for a cube box!
Request: re-assess the best sleeves now that KMC claims that the sub par quality was actually impostors posing as KMC and that they went back to their own formula
even though this is clearly a lie and them avoiding their issues.
Taylor Pace , I have had more luck using Max Protection for inner sleeves, too.
He did a best sleeve a few months ago. Said it's Eclipse or Dragon Shield Mattes
that has nothing to do with the formula changes proposed by KMC...
Michael Reppenhagen best inner sleeve
The supreme game chest has gotten an upgrade. I just purchased one and it seems they now have the same finish on the outside as the DEX protections case and double deck box.
Awesome timing! I was just looking at buying a case this morning! Thank you for the awesome classes that you do Prof! Never ever a let down.
I know he said the Supreme One Row and Game chest from DEX don't hold deck boxes or top loaders, but I have two chests, and I am able to store the top loaders in them, normally, with no issue. I'm tempted to buy a boulder now and see if it fits, because they seemed the same height.
0:48 I would honestly like to know, did you get that on your first try?
For me, I love my super hive as it lets me take all I need for an event in one large box. Multiple decks, dice, and the playmat. I can slide it into my backpack, and because it’s in the backpack, I’m not worried. When I get home, I can take it out and bring it back to the card room.
Prof you are the best Magic youtuber. Thank you for your hard work and the work of everyone involved.
This video is Great way to inform yourself before purchasing the wrong item! Thank you very much for the information!
If the UG HIVE appeals to you then you could easily attach some "marine" (as in boats) grade velcro on it to give some extra support...
Wow! Thanks Prof! Literally asked you about this on the twitters a week or so ago. Timely, and awesome, as ever!
I always try to leave a like to the professor's review videos...a kind public service and he looks like he has fun doing it too xD
I think you gave Dex Protection's website the hug of death, prof.
I'm a little bummed by the magnets on the superhive, but I won't be using it to travel very much and it fits exactly what I need at the moment so I'm still going to give it a shot
Hey prof, your shake and drop tests never fail to give me anxiety
Unfortunately getting enough to fill up the game chest would add another $36
Which is okay, until you get to the magnets which adds some hesitation for me
Professor, I have to say the Superhive was an interest to me.
It's more convenient without the boxes.
i would buy 10 more academics/XL from you please continue their production if you at all can! best deck box ever
Ive missed these product reviews. So happy theres a new one
DEX Protection boxes are often available on Massdrop.com for great discounts!
Be aware they also sell sleeves, but they are definitely a D in quality. 4/5 of the sleeve packs I got were not tournament legal for various reasons. (See through, tears, wrinkles, splits)
Ive got 18 commander decks and counting, i think the battlechest would be a great place to keep some:)
i love ultimate guard but ive noticed alot of problems lately except with the boulder boxes they are amazing. do the side loading pages next please.
Thanks for the upload! almost picked up the dex one row but apparently it can’t hold deckboxes (lol what?!)
I’ve been using officially licensed Pokémon box sets (expensive) to hold my ultrapros / keep decks separate...
Quality content and thorough review as always 💕
JUST built my noob cube, so this video comes in super handy. On the ball as always, Prof.
I don’t love Velcro as it gets packed with lint over time and loses its effectiveness.
Claude Rodrigue Same. Velcro closures don't hold very well after a while, at least in my experience, and if they get dirty then they're impossible to clean properly. I prefer magnets for that reason.
Claude Rodrigue I have the sound of it
Velcro/pro + magnets!
