  • Nissan Maxima starter replacement and Infiniti I30 starter replacement. As in all our repair videos, we only use basic hand tools. It's a bit of work to get to, but overall not a terrible job. Cheers.

    I took back the re-manufactured starter and it failed on his bench. I bought a brand new starter. Installed it, and it works like a champ.
    Lesson learned: Pay a few dollars more from the git go and save yourself from a headache and a waste of time with re-manufactured crap!
    Thanks for your help!

    Thanks for the comprehensive vid! I'm going to replace the starter in my friend's 2001 Maxima tomorrow. It's a huge help to know exactly what it entails in advance. For starters (no pun intended), I would have assumed it was accessible from underneath the car after replacing the starter on my old Nissan 240SX years ago. I did a Nissan infinity and the air cleaner was removed but it was a model that required going under and removing a metal bracket that seemed like a junction point for all the vacuum tubes. it looked like a motor mount but only had two bolts at the bottom and 2 smaller nuts higher up on the engine. the starter was disconnected and slipped out easily from the passenger side and went back in reverse. great vid for accessing the top starter bolts.

I live in Yukon (north of Juneau, capital of Alaska)...it is -9 degrees F (-23 C) and in the morning I will head down to the alignment shop parking lot where my car is stuck and see if I can get the starter replaced (outdoors unfortunately). Your video was great...I have the process memorized. If I don't freeze, I owe you a beer.

    • @CarsNToys
      @CarsNToys  Před 10 lety

      Just a quick thought: Place the tranny in neutral and try starting the car. If the car starts, then you'll need to replace the neutral safety switch. If it doesn't then the starter should be the problem. Good luck! Cheers.

  • @CarsNToys
    @CarsNToys  Před 11 lety

    Hi kcebrian. It's similar but not exactly the same. Start by disconnecting the negative power terminal at the battery. Remove all electrical connections at the starter. Unbolt the starter from the vehicle. I believe on the early Altima's you have to jack up the car to get to the starter. Hope this helps. Cheers.

    Great video! I like the socket and extension as a breaker bar, I used a long extension from the 17m bolt head and used the rubber side of a hammer to steady my ratchet against the body of the Nissan, then used my hydraulic jack pipes to to extend the ratchet! Not a lot of wiggle room there!

    Very thorough with both disassembly and reassembly, thank you! Also appreciate the tips on other things to look for but I do want to ask what contact point you made with the multi-meter. Was it the terminal where you removed the nut? I couldn't quite tell as the boot was in the way a little bit. Next, great idea for the "homemade" breaker bar. Finally, I kept worrying about your watch getting scratched. I'm a bit clumsy in tight spaces so I'll be taking mine off for sure since I know I'd wind up scratching the hell out of the crystal ;) Cheers and thanks, again for this as I need to dive into my 2001 asap and wasn't sure what I was in for.

    Great video for removal and installation of starter. There was no discussion of the original problem that was diagnosed as a bad starter. On many of these Maxima's, the starter is locked out by the OEM alarm system. When the key is turned, the car does not start. There is a click inside the dash, which I suspect is the kill switch locking out the starter. How did you diagnose your problem as a bad starter vs. a bad alarm system?
