    Holistic Management was made popular in Savory's 2013 Ted Talk, How to Fight Desertification and Reverse Climate Change.
    This documentary was produced by Trevor Langham and his crew at Fig Multimedia Tech in Zimbabwe. We share this video in hopes that Trevor's amazing work will reach a wider audience to honor his memory.

    About Savory Institute:
    Loss of grasslands leads to climate change, floods, droughts, famine, and worldwide poverty. It’s our mission to promote large-scale restoration of the world’s grasslands through Holistic Management.
    Holistic Management is a process of decision-making and planning that gives people the insights and management tools needed to understand nature: resulting in better, more informed decisions that balance key social, environmental, and financial considerations.

      Sadly, the Nobel Prize has been perverted into honoring the very people/corporations that are actively destroying our planet. Monsanto, producer of Roundup, now monopolizes Big Ag in the US. They are even selling seeds and make it illegal to use any than theirs. America is becoming a 3rd World Country.

      What they always fail to mention is the *history*. *Apartheid* South Africa, Namibia and the Rhodesian government confiscated over 80% of agrible lands, and forced the rural indigenous into these deserts, forever depending on aid. This is still the case in much of Namibia and even still in South Africa. And largely why white farmers were being attacked decades ago in Zimbabwe. The British never met their end of that bargain, which was in fact negotiated as a key priority at Zimbabwe’s independence. So in the end Mugabe and his supporters took it unto themselves.

    The thing is, this is what natural history demonstrates. Vast herds of Hoofed animals roaming the plains moved by predators and seasons keeping lands fertile. The Rockies region saw this with the reintroduction of wolves. They pushed the elk, deer, and such from area to area and it reformed the land, vegetation, rivers, lakes, etc. the restoration of the natural way.

    • @SirPhytone
      @SirPhytone Před 10 měsíci

      Exactly. It is very hard to achieve the same with humans herding cattle, we need to re-wild these areas, not try and control them with herds of livestock so we can kill and eat their meat at 15 months old. Animals in a herd would live more like 20 years and their carcass would be returned to the ground. It's a very different system, we need to allow predators back into these lands.

      I would also add: teach the kids how and when to change their minds. One of the issues here is locals being very traditional and strong minded.
      Also... In this holistic approach is one untruth (unintentional lie). It cannot reverse climate change. Much work goes into climate research and data suggests that while holistic grazing is great at combating desertification, it is about 6-7 times less effective at carbon storage than Mr Savory claims. It's not a bad thing, it's absolutely fantastic. It's just not a panacea for climate change. I guess kids should know that too and be able to change their minds if new research shows otherwise ;).

We added hand chipped prunings and dead trees, and added that to the soil. Each compost pit was allowed to cure for three years, thus the reason for four. Our family garden was 2 acres that also feed the town relatives. We also supplied most of the eggs and meat for the family besides our own needs. Grandpa did this because there was more than we needed. Like I said Below Old School Technology that modern man had abandoned in favor of Chemicals and poison pesticides.

But I live in a country where its citizens picked a charlatan as their President and now the opposition party is about to coronate a dementing former vice President as their choice in the upcoming election! In this world where theatre and "alternative truth" is operative to the extent that it is, rational and logical thinking will be silenced by all means possible by those whose financial interests are threatened. Irrespective of how logical and thoughtful Mr. Savory might be in his demonstration, altruism will be opposed by ignorance, suspicion and denial. • @pegsbarton6353
      @pegsbarton6353 Před rokem

      I think that if you overgraze any piece of land without more nourishment, or without the land having time to recover, it WILL lead to desertification.
      The clever part of Savorys plan is that the animals were kept in the kraals [?] for 5 nights, in between grazing the surrounding land during the day. Then they were moved to another section of the planned area, to repeat the magic. The land that had had the 5 nights intensive trampling, manuring and 'watering' was 'loaded and ready to go,' and once planted up, produced a crop. I assume the planting followed the animals and rotated the crops, rested fields and freshly manured fields, to create a fully rejuvenated area that could sustain people, land and animals alike. Actual soil gradually replaces dust and sand and becomes productive. Even a rejuvenated area would need sustaining regularly, but keeping the land able to absorb any rains, fresh manures and seeds planted would ensure that it would help sustain its productivity. Plus, and it's a big plus...it puts the local people in charge of their own welfare, which is a huge incentive to any community.
      It's such a simple, common sense idea, but obviously no-one has come up with it before. It is taking the cooperation of whole villages working together, and combining their animals, which must have been hard to do at first, but they did it...saw the benefit, and have reaped the rewards... which is wonderful.
      Its unbelievable that more governments have not thrown money at the project, it's helping people help themselves which is always the best way. But sometimes governments don't see the bigger picture.

    It's, the system of cattle herd grazing in agriculture fields, been practised traditionally in India till 40 - 60 years ago. Obviously the animals love to move every single day, i.e. rotational grazing, to escape their own dung, urine litter. 👍👍👍
    The bare minimum requirement for healthy soil is that the Bio-mass grown must be returned to soil.
    Usually, it takes around 7 - 9 months for the biomass to decay and become part of soil, but with cattle eating the same and giving back to soil in semi processed form, it takes 7 - 9 weeks for the same thing to happen, being enriched with Microorganisms.

No one is saying this is THE solution to all the world's problems, but it could CERTAINLY play a role in grasslands, savanah, and scrubland where desertification is occuring and seasonal moisture is the norm. It IS a management of land that mimics nature, but I also don't think anyone is suggesting it should REPLACE nature, either. WHat about using this technique to reclaim degraded land and turning it back over to nature -- allowing native herds to expand into those areas? I mean, let's not be so rigid. We need to reduce CO2 emissions to net zero, but this is also a tool in the toolbox and you can't argue with the potential socioeconomically stabilizing effects of this management practice!

    I am really amazed at what is possible. In Ethiopia I started a private project to introduce the mostly uneducated farmers to permaculture. I would like to plant a few hectares of forest to increase the amount of rain and improve the soil's water storage capacity. 80 years ago Ethiopia had 75% forest cover, today it is only 2.7%. And it's getting less and less.
    But I am convinced that we can all help create a fresh start.
    Greetings from Ethiopia

    I think they are missing the step other people have implemented, once the water starts to absorb properly, start planting trees that provide canopy cover. Africa used to have amazing forests but has been the dredging pit for thousands of years. I hear a lot.. things are naturally changing, but that's not true. It's literally us cutting down everything and using everything till there is nothing left.

The numerous successes proves recovering grasslands & forests is possible with animal grazing management. So maybe that's why millions of buffalo roamed the US, the buffalo managed the grasslands as Savory has suggested.
