I got a comment from a local person there who said: "We own the Queen Anne Cemetery" and that "those buried there are not forgotten", AND even threatened me; that I must take my episode down because I was trespassing on private property. Hahaha - Did we see any no trespassing signs? There were NONE. (I deleted and blocked this rubbish).
Wow, the audacity. And such a defensive delusional liar to boot. I think some of the people there in Greenwood Illinois must be soft in the brain. Dumb dumb. 🤦♂️
You might also agree with me that they all should be embarrassed. Sounds like from the prickly reaction someone is very embarrassed.
It is very appalling. These poor forgotten souls. There are no excuses for this tragic situation. Maybe someone there will wake up. Won't hold my breath tho....

Some are famous.

Ron, I'm in the Country, about 20 minutes from the cemetery, and I spoke with McHenry County Conservation and Greenwood Township today, 4/8/2024. Conservation was taking care of it as prairie land, so they would just do a burn. Not too long ago, maybe after you published this video, the Land Conservatory in the county started the process/paperwork to obtain the property so that they can legally take care of the property properly. This process could take another 6 months to a year for the paperwork to clear and ownership deeded to the Land Conservatory. Until this is completed, nobody can legally do anything to the property. The people in Greenwood Township would love to clean it up and take care of it, but they don't have a legal claim and they don't have the funding to undertake the cleanup and maintenance. The representative I spoke to runs the Greenwood Cemetery, and it is very well maintained. I will follow-up as best I can, but at this point it is tied up in red tape. Once it clears they will probably be looking for volunteers to help out. I will try to keep you posted on the progress.
Thanks Jerry for doing the leg work and finding this info. Interesting. Well, my main take away is that I don't think it is right that they would be listed to plan for a burn. It's not a marsh or wetlands. Sounds like narrow minded process makers if they are limited to only do that, or nothing.
Obviously, this is a cemetery. If a burn is done, it will char - and over time, will ruin the monuments. It sounds like folks there in the conservation department are just reading a section number in a reg. book.
Anyway, hopefully they figure it out.
I will be back this summer to check on this place again. Hopefully they get it right.

Secondly, you mentioned that the representative you spoke to who runs the Greenwood Cemetery indicated that it is very well maintained. If that is what they call "well maintained", I would hate to see what unmaintained looks like.

It would have to be Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn NY , I think it's been around since 1837 or 38 , I forgot exactly but that's gotta be close .

The condition of the cemetery is horrific!!! You can't even see the sign with the name of the cemetery on it unless you remove the tall plants hiding it. If the owner is getting paid to keep up the cemetery, he's pocketing the money and letting the foliage take over the cemetery. There aren't any No Trespassing signs. I hope the citizens in the area will do something about this pathetic cemetery. The people buried there deserve more respect than being lost in tall foliage. Thank you for respecting those buried there and paying tribute to their lives.
Even if there were, nobody can see them. Cemeteries should never be owned by individuals unless it is a little family plot of 7 or less individuals. This is a large cemetery thus the county should own it or historical society.
In Oklahoma. You owned the land in fact you get a deed. It don't matter if it's just one person. You own the land.
What you go through Ron, to make sure these folks aren’t forgotten. And you bring us all along to pay our respects as well. Shame on this community! I cannot believe the state this cemetery is in. If it weren’t for these people resting here, they would not even be able to call this home!

My husband and I found a small cemetery not far from our house with graves mostly in the 1800's. It was hidden behind all the weeds and shrubs but I happened to see 1 tall headstone as we drove by. We went back and it was so sad.....We plan on taking equipment this spring sometime and getting it all cleaned up. Ppl we have talked to had no idea it was there.

Those tall shrubs that you were walking through at 3:39 are called Staghorn Sumac. One can harvest the reddish orange heads and make sumac lemonade out of them. Check to see if they are ready by rubbing your fingers on them and then putting them to your tongue. If that tastes very, VERY tart, then you are ready to make a pitcher of it. This video reminds me here in Nebraska that it is time to go pick some. A glass of that will contain more Vitamin C than a glass of orange juice.
Whenever you visit cemeteries and read names aloud it reminds my of the Shirley Temple movie
“The Blue Bird” where Shirley Temple and her brother in the movie go on a journey and see their grandparents who’ve passed.
Her grandmother tells her whenever someone says their name aloud “they come to life” because they are being remembered ❤
I kind of feel that’s what happens when you read all these beautiful souls headstones..

We found our original family cemetery 20 years ago it was now in the woods the trees have overtaken it. There was a tombstone grown into a tree and about 2 feet up….. and it turns out my great great grandfather had a trust that is still paying a monthly stipend to a family to maintain it….

That is so sad that the Queen Anne Prairie Cemetery isn't taken care of and left to the weeds to swallow the graves up. We should all write to the city of Greenwood, Illinois and complain. And yes, he is alive 😀 I feel so bad for the cows with all those flies all over them. I wish I could do something to help rid them of the flies.
The purple flowers are Hosta's they are Heirloom blooming plants. Very hearty in their ability to thrive in harsh conditions with low water tables. they are annuals and return each Spring and bloom in the Summer months. A delightful adventure. Thank you, Ron! Be safe.
Hostas are perennials and the flowers in the cemetery are Bluebells. Look closely at the leaves. Believe these are Spanish Bluebells. My brother has them in his flower beds.

I believe they are Bellflowers, a native prairie plant.

Those weeds look very much like what we call a stag tree or stag horn sumac. They can spread really fast as they put out suckers which grow into another tree, so on and so forth. It's also known as the tree of life....I used to have one in my back garden and had to cut out the new growth that would shoot up in different areas surrounding the trunk, didn't want it to take over the rest of the plants.
Jethro Tull (Ian Anderson)is very much alive. In fact, today is his 76th birthday! Thanks for the walk, Ron. Such a shame that it is so unkempt 😔

Awesome history on this ole graveyard. The gate had to have been up long time to be rusty and nearly gone. Graveyard probably had been closed in at one time. Thank u for sharing, really amazing to watch and learn.
That trek through the cemetery was impressive. Thanks for sharing. It’s sad the cemetery in so overgrown. I like how you so obviously care for these graves and history.
That grave yard is uncalled for, that was sad.....High school ( history class) should set up a program for extra points on cleaning it up, fixing and D2 cleaning the head stones. Have parents with pick up trucks haul the very tall weeds away, thats just an idea.... Thank you Ron for investigating the grave yard.

I’m sure plenty would volunteer to tidy it if given the opportunity … why do they have to go through all the red tape. It seems an easy solution to me and a benefit to the land owner.
At 65 didn't know people owned the land thought it was city goverment
growing up, my grandfather, was a caretaker at a rather large cemetery in our area. the office was a split building. half was the office and the other half was a small home where they lived. so of course holidays and such were done there, and i spent alot of time there. my first job was even there. he was the caretaker for 25 years. in that time growing up, i grew a fascination with wandering around, looking at the stones and the dates, and just wondering about the people and their lives. your show really hits home with me. kinda like doing that with a well informed friend! i still do this with cemeteries that i come across in me area, only with my daughter now. thank you for what you do!

It would be nice if that community would get together this fall and clean that cemetery up. When I saw those flowers, I thought of the saying, “bloom where you’re planted.” No one sees those flowers blooming at those graves, but they’re doing what they can to brighten those forgotten places.

Whew. I kept hoping you didn't fall in an old, uncovered well, thinking it might be on old farmland. Awesome adventure for early morning here in Georgia. Impressive headstones have withstood time. Obviously people of some means, descendants probably could afford to keep it cut back. I think the flowers are Lupine Prairie, seem familiar from Chicago childhood. Online pictures in different seasons reveal a beautiful resting place. Woodstock is a pretty town, but I've never seen that cemetery. Thanks for a great tour off the beaten path.

Very sad the condition of this cemetery!😢 A small overgrown cemetery in our area was cleaned up by the Boy Scouts. There should be local volunteers that could do the same thing. It’s really a disgrace that it is left this way.😢

I found out this
Queen Anne Prairie Eckert Cemetery
Although this cemetery has a wild and primitive look, it is not one of the earliest in the county. In 1852 Jacob Eckert bought the property from New York land speculator Truman Safford, who purchased over 3000 acres in the area when it was officially opened by the government in 1839. This piece seems to have been designated from the start as a burial ground. It might just as well be name the "German Cemetery" since all the burials are from that ethnic group. Like other nationalities, the Germans tended to live, die and be buried with their own kind.
Currently the cemetery is maintained by the McHenry County Conservation District as a mini-prairie. Although the land was never farmed, cultivated plants were introduced over the years making the effort to preserve the prairie somewhat challenging. Peonies, daylilies and irises were brought in as grave decorations in the 19th century. In 1938 M & S Hartlett landscaped the site with trees and sumacs. The woody plants are controlled by periodic burning, but the introduced perennials continue to do battle with the prairie plants for supremacy. Nonetheless, it is a charming and unusual site.

Sounds like the “owner” has a guilty conscience to me! What a jerk! Amen to you for exposing the condition of the cemetery!!! I remember this episode and if this is how the “unforgotten” are treated, I can’t imagine how the forgotten are treated! WOW! Keep doing what you’re doing, Ron.
That’s the largest patch of sumacs I’ve ever seen. Many years ago two of my girlfriends and I were way up Northern Minnesota. Walking through tall weeds and shrubs looking for wildflowers. We were full of ticks. Had to go into a restaurant restroom and strip and pull ticks off of ourselves and our clothing. I couldn’t wait to get back to her cabin and get into the shower. One of the stupidest things I’ve ever done. The plant you asked about in the cemetery maybe a Hairy Beard Tongue. Native to Illinois.
This is a fascinating adventure but so sad these graves were neglected like that. Why aren't the people in Greenwood taking more pride in their heritage and community? That could be a nice cemetery to visit. It's definitely historical.

Yes Sumac spreads like crazy! We made the mistake of buying a Staghorn Sumac tree for our front yard in a former house. The roots would form shoots that came up all over the place. Our neighbor at the time said “just keep mowing!” 😅
@naomisgram1 I've had landscapers try to tell me that plant was POISON sumac. Of course, they want to charge extra for special handling. It's a great way to test sleazy landscapers.

What a crying shame. Surely a local historian group or cemetery community could raise money to have it all cleaned up or even a few go in and do it themselves. So sad as it belongs to history and should not be forgotten.

Real shame old cemetery are forgotten and not cared for, being so old they should be treated as historic monuments and preserved.
Loved the video just like all your other videos even though I dont comment often. I've said it before and will say it again I love how you say we and talk to us as if we're right there with you, idk it just feels really nice as a viewer.
Also thank you for letting me know about your other channel yesterday and the 5 parts video of your Franklin Expedition, it was really nice with some very sad parts to it too like when you came across the human remains and the story about the tribe being moved by the government. Also you must have balls of steel going over there by yourself, must've been very scary though when you got caught in the snowstorm knowing you had wolves around somewhere following you and you couldn't see anything because of the storm you wouldn't have seen them coming. Glad you made it back in one piece to your family and friends and now you're making awesome videos for thousands to watch. Must be really proud of yourself with everything you've accomplished. This cemetery is on the Registered Illinois Natural Heritage Landmark which it is funded by the federal government. If this owner is getting grants or funding, then he is responsible to maintain it. If the cemetery driveway is open out in the road, which they DID have an easement from the road to cemetery as Google photo indicated, then it is publically accessible. So shame on the landowner for not maintaining it! Edited: according to the DNR/heritage sign which my husband had to blow it up many times, it said on the bottom permission by the owner. So there was NO signs at the time of the visit, it has to be visible from the road. So in order to trespass someone, the present owner MUST clear the signs, clear the fence lines. I hope the citizen of the town will say something about it and pressure the owner to DO something with the property. It is disgusting, disrespectful and shameful letting it go like that.
I'm so glad I'm not the only taphophile! I love Graves and cemeteries due to the history and people they represent. I think most people's lives would make great auto biographies. Thanks for keeping memories alive and for the channel.
I looked up the name Peter Herdholtz and found the Queen Anne Prairie Cem. page which shows all the people buried there. There are many folks with the last name Herdholtz and Magdalene is listed along with 13 others.
