I think one of the best points made here was that Casino would probably have been a lot better received if it didn't come out so soon after Goodfellas. It needed more distance from Goodfellas to even have a chance to contend with it as far as overall quality. It still would probably be thought of as an inferior film but if it was released in like 2010, it might have had a much closer split among fans of both.

I think Goodfellas was the better movie, although I think Casino had a better story. To me, the difference is timing. Goodfellas was based on the book Wise Guy that had come out years before. The screenplay for Casino was being written at the exact same time as the book, and the movie felt like it was filmed to make a deadline. I think if Scorcese had taken his time, it would have been a lot better. Both books are great reading, though.
