The great thing about this extended interview is I think fans really get to see his personality shine through, rather than just in the limited sound bites everyone is used to seeing. I've had the chance to interview him myself twice and have some extended backstage visits as well, and while he is very thoughtful, he also has an amazing sense of humor, which one can definitely see in this interview. Best show ever and Jabs made it that much better!!! You could feel and see that they all loved doing what they do!
MJ totally under appreciated by rock fans. One of the best-especially for Scorpions. Me and my brother snuck in some photo gear taking photos (film negative not digital) at a show. MJ was right in front of us and saw me on my brother's back with the camera. He posed with some great action, did a solo pointed at us and I gave him the thumbs up. He smiled and went to the other side. A great performer, humble and didn't mind the camera in the audience. This was in the 80s when camera, recording devices were not allowed.
I agree with this and most other entries. Nice, interesting, from a great musician. Just one little reservation - he ignored, twice, Michael: first time telling about himself joining the band, then about Lovedrive (no influence at all - really?). In the story as the Scorpions have it, Michael has been erased from the Lovedrive context and this just isn't fair as he wrote and played on, like, a half of the record. Also the face grimace Matthias made about Michael was unkind. Other than that, cool guy. Also, it's pleasant to see in his eyes, the look, that he is a happy, fulfilled man.
@@greg-warsaw4708sorry but Michael made his own bed. He walked out, most likely because of ego. Matthias doesn't HAVE an ego because he loves music, as well as his fans. It was on the album "Animal Magnetism" that Mathias Jabs was firmly in the driver's seat as the Scorpions lead guitar player even though "Lovedrive" is his debut with 'Scorps, that album's main guitar input was mostly handled by Michael Schenker.

Hey Matthias. I met you at MSG when you Opened for Rainbow in the early 80's. That night you told me about your 'secret' on the solo for Dynamite. I have never forgotten meeting you. Thanks for a great memory
I love what he says about Explorers and Vs. My first real guitar was a Gibson Explorer. And he's so right, it was sooo heavy. I didn't realize it at the time, but my next purchase was an Ibanez ProLine V and when I got it, I'm not kidding, I thought it was a toy and I had been ripped off🤣
He alone made me start playing guitar when i was a kid and i will never ever be able to thank him enough for that. A true inspiration and so underrated that it makes me sick. He is right up there with the best of all time.
What a cool guy!! When he talks about all the places he's been, I remember seeing the Scorp's in 2000 in little ol'Boise, Idaho!! I wonder if he remembers playing that gig?? Outside, 100 degree's and about 10,000 to 15,000 hot, sweaty rockers!! Excellent show!!
Scorps top my list of favorite bands. All songs are catchy with great hooks, and Matthias just tears it up with great melody lines. Have all their albums and seen them a few times
That new album is such a shot of adrenaline! I have already played Rock Believer a ridiclous amount of times and it makes me smile wide hearing the vitality still evident in their music!! This band is such a gift for hard rock fans!!
He gets no respect when it comes to comparisons with Uli and Michael. But he's easily my favorite of the 3, and without any argument, he's been the most successful for the Scorpions. The hardest shit for me to learn as a guitar player was his sick scales ascending up the fretboard in the Hurricane solo. He is so criminally underrated.
Glad to hear l am not the only one who prefers Matthias to the other two. I love all three but Matthias is such a tasteful and dynamic player...always been a huuuuge fan of his style!
I have thought that the unfavorable comparison to the other two is unfair. He is absolutely at the foundation of the bulk of the hits. BLACKOUT and ANIMAL MAGNETISM are critical in my early hard rock/ metal development. Technique combined with melodic appeal, the whole package.
As a lifelong Scorpions fan since Blackout I don’t think I’ve watched an interview with Jabs. What a likeable guy, and criminally underrated guitarist.
Yep Animal Magnetism is when the beast was released, in my opinion. Then it went up, and had a 'sound'. Uli is great player, but Rudolph is the anchor, Matthias is the icing on top. Blackout blew up the radio in 1982. There was no longer just Rush and Van Halen. The riffs just crystallized in Love at 1st Sting. Bad Boys Running Wild is one of my favorite riffs, my eldest daughter loves it too. It has a vibe Different from UFO Michael. Of course Randy Rhoads was an Asteroid smackdown. .. But something in Matthias just seemed better overall, not just whiz bang leads, rhythms written by he and Rudy were just dare I say, EPIC
Some of the most memorable and melodic guitar solos. Scorpions were the first band I ever heard where you could actually hum along to the guitar solos. Perfect combination of melody and flash in his playing and writing.
Matthias Jabs gets often overlooked, when people talk about the Scorpions' guitarplayers, because Uli Jon Roth & Michael Schenker are such legends, BUT the guy has written amazing solos, has a great tone and his playing always fits the songs. Plus, he always comes off as a pretty chill and down to earth type of guy.
Funny he didn't mention that his first album with Scorpions, halve the songs were written and played with Michael. But he didn't want to stay in the band. Awesome band
Exactly this. I played World Wide Live (on double vinyl) until the grooves wore out back in the day - I don't think there's a bad song or note on there. Sure, he's not as venerated as Uli or Michael, but he's a class player, and by all accounts a very amiable, humble sort of chap.
@@MercutioUK2006 I love that album ! Hit between the Eyes has an amazing solo..and his tone is out of this world..watch them here on youtube on a 2019 tour..damn awesome !
I saw them on the Monsters of Rock tour with Van Halen, Metallica, Dokken, and Kingdom Come , and the Scorpions totally stole the show. They were clearly having a good time, and it showed, they really were awesome. Love Van Halen, but the Scorpions blew everyone away.
When I was a kid, my parents had a VHS tape of the Scorps. Had all their music videos up to that point and some bootleg live stuff from various shows. Matthias Jabs' striped Explorer was my first taste of GAS - guitar acquisition syndrome. I had to own an Explorer. Rick Neilsen had em, Pete Willis had em, Jabs had em, Hetfield had em... All the cool guys had Explorers. 30+ years later, I still think the Explorer is the coolest guitar shape ever thanks to this guy
@@SkyAvila983 I watched an interview with Kirk Hammett where he talked about this. Jabs did influence him, but he also mentioned both Roth and Michael as well. He spoke about all three.
I really like Matthias' solos and although he doesn't always the attention of being one of the greatest his solos stick to your mind and combine the mechanics of metallic shred (with taste) exceptional melodic composition that makes the song much better.
Mathias Jabs is very cool dude. I just never got on board with 80s and 90 s SCORPIONS. I Will say the live sound of the twin guitars make SCORPIONS one of the best in concert. It is unbelievable just top notch.
I've loved his playing since the first time I heard him with the band...I remember seeing them in Memphis, TN during the first Monsters of Rock tour. They sounded exactly like the records and put on a better show than Van Hagar, the headliner. His energy, fantastic tone, and superb leads make him one of my top 10 guitar players EVER.
Seeing the Scorpions on their World Wide Live tour when I was 17 changed my life. I'd never experienced anything like that and almost 40yrs later I still remember the show. Incredible. Matthias is one of my biggest influences as a player.
I can't believe I'd watch this entire interview of Matthias Jabs without any knowledge in guitar. He's so Interesting, Humourous and Talented Guitarist.

I was caught in the Scorpions’ spell with Animal Magnetism- The Zoo, Make It Real, Don’t Make No Promises - and never looked back. Blackout remains my favorite of all Scorps albums. They’ve always had the ability to write hooks and riffs that embed themselves in your mind, attach themselves to memories like the soundtrack to a film. Also, one of the tightest bands I’ve ever seen live (I’ve seen a few). This is the first interview I’ve ever seen with Mathias. What a cool dude. Seems like all the Scorpions have been fan-oriented, first, from the very beginning and probably helps explain their incredible endurance.
Enjoyed listening to Matthias sharing his stories. I've seen the Scorpions live twice and both times, they did indeed kick ass as he said they did even if they were tired. Also met him and Rudolph circa 1990 in Austin, Texas. They were both very kind and gracious. Great memory for me.
This was great. His English is outstanding. Better than my German. Ich lernen langsum 😂 Great guitar player. He's funny too. Great interview. I hope to see his guitar store someday.

Like Keith said "Believe it or not I haven't forgotten any of it." This is one cool guy.
One of the All Time Best Guitarists of all Time. He has a very unique Feeling when he plays a Solo and is still accurately when playing very fast.
Matthias is awesome....he is truly amazing.
He has been a huge influence on me.
He looks great....he has definitely aged well.
I really, really, REALLY like Matthias especially after watching this video. GREAT upload, and thank you!
Scorps top my list of favorite bands. All songs are catchy with great hooks, and Matthias just tears it up with great melody lines. Have all their albums and seen them a few times
One of my all time favorite guitarists. I'm on a big Scorpions kick lately with the release of Rock Believer!
What a cool dude. Always loved his playing but now I can see he's a lovely fella too I like him even more.
I love Matthias ,awsome guitar player and a cool individual. Love the Scorpions.
Matthias Jabs in in my top 20 favorite guitarist he’s a super super guitar player and his fills are tremendous.
Mathias ist ein super sympathischer Typ und einfach ein super Gitarrist.
What a nice, down-to-earth guy! I really enjoyed watching this vid.
Matthias is one of my favorites. Seems like a real down to earth guy too.
It has a vibe
Different from UFO Michael.
@@nacuda9 I like the two others` guitarplaying much more than Matzes pull off tirades. But more than Michael Uli is my favorite player, so creativ.
Schenker is a legendary effup. M. Jabs shows up early, works overtime, and gets the job done. We don’t look askance at those qualities.
I Absolutely Agree....seen them East Troy (Alpine Valley) Wisconsin April 1988 Woooo✌✌✌😎
What a layed back genuine interview. I really enjoyed it. His stage presence is on a level of its own. Thank you for sharing. Have a blessed day.
Matthias is one of the most dynamic, exciting lead guitar players of all time. He is a huge influence to Kirk Hammett.
Really? hmmm
@@SkyAvila983
I watched an interview with Kirk Hammett where he talked about this. Jabs did influence him, but he also mentioned both Roth and Michael as well. He spoke about all three.
That energy is shared, Mathias. That’s why we come to see you, too! Thank you for decades of great music and ecstatic shows. Long live Scorpions!
I really like Matthias' solos and although he doesn't always the attention of being one of the greatest his solos stick to your mind and combine the mechanics of metallic shred (with taste) exceptional melodic composition that makes the song much better.
He’s got to be one of the coolest guys in Rock!
Such a great guitarist/Musician and super genuine
I love it! A really great guitarist and person! Thanks for all the great music Matthias Jabs!
Matthias has always amazed me! But his performance on unplugged in Athens is one of his greatest performances ever!
One of the coolest guys in Rock & Roll ! Great guitarist as well ! Much respect fot Matthias ! ...
I didn’t even realize MJ spoke English and on top of that he’s cool AF. Great interview!
I can't believe I'd watch this entire interview of Matthias Jabs without any knowledge in guitar. He's so Interesting, Humourous and Talented Guitarist.
This is a really good watch!!! Matthias seems like a super nice guy and his guitar playing is awesome!!!
What a nice guy and a great guitarist. His English is perfect too.
I’ve been a big Scorpions fan since the early ‘80s. But this is the first interview I have ever heard with Matthias. He is so cool! So down to earth & funny!!
He is criminally underrated.
I'm from Malaysia.
Thanks Matthias and Scorpions..
We all love you..
Hi MJ, just saw this..... good to see a documentary about MJ Guitars. I regret never making it there, but that virtual trip thru the store sure was amazing. Take care and please stay healthy and safe!!
Крутое интервью! Спасибо! ❤Матиас - один из лучших гитаристов рок музыки! Прекрасные , вкусные, мелодичные фразировки от Матиаса - это классика рока и Хеви металла! Мало таких гитаристов как он.❤
Ich lernen langsum 😂
Great guitar player.
He's funny too.
Great interview. I hope to see his guitar store someday.
Yes his English has gotten so much better . He now specks it like it’s his first language. When I first met him in 1982 in Cleveland Ohio . He could barely speak English at all ! What a great guy ❤
@@MsRocker961 Yeah. I remember him in a vhs video I purchased when I was young and he could barely speak English. I saw them in around 82 or so and Iron Maiden opened for them. 🤘♥️
One of the best bands I saw play live in the 80s . This was a great interview 🤟
