I don't get the whole North African thing and why middle eastern people get soo much of it and whether North African really means middle eastern or they just can't figure out alot between the two. My 23andme results first said I was like 3% North African, which makes sense, i am 95% Portuguese and Spanish. However, now the update says I am zero North African but am 3% middle eastern. Which came first, the chicken or the egg?
Well talking about the haplogroup, North Africa and the Middle East are very different, Middle East is either J1 or J2, North Africa is EM, so it’s not the same ancestry. However for Portuguese people, it’s common to have Middle East or North African dna because of the close geography with North Africa and because of Andalusia, Arabs and North Africans amazighs did conquer Andalusia for many centuries and left their DNA there and some of Europeans who converted to Islam fled Europe to North Africa after the fall of Andalusia and got mixed with native North Africans, this is why many Moroccans for example have even 30% Iberian which is not shocking at all. As for your results, maybe they were a bit confused because there are some companies that put Middle East and North Africa together, although it’s not the same haplogroup, so do the dna test in a company that is more accurate.
