    John Gardner's website used to have an interview he did with Raymond Benson where they discussed each of the Gardner books up to SeaFire. It's not there anymore but can be found using the WayBack machine. The LTK section has an interesting quote:
    "[The Licence to Kill novelisation] was a one-off idea, and I thought it might be fun. It wasn't. I did it, but I wouldn't want to do it again. I should've known... I started working on it and the screenplay changed daily. I would get phone calls saying "John, scenes 230-235 are out, and new pages are being couried to you." It drove me mad. (Since the time of this interview, Gardner agreed to write the novelisation of GoldenEye, but on his terms. He accepted the assignment on the condition that he have more freedom to "add and subtract" what he wanted and not be held to the screenplay _during_ shooting.)"
    This probably explains why the GoldenEye novelisation feels closer to the film than LTK. He didn't have an original novel out in 1995 so, with no deadline from Glidrose/IFP to worry about, maybe he had the freedom to wait until the final script was locked in. Though clearly he wrote it before filming was finished considering Admiral Chuck hasn't been changed from American to Canadian. And maybe that "add and subtract" bit explains why Xenia's red Ferrari is yellow in the book.

      @calvindyson  Před 10 měsíci +18

      Thanks so much for sourcing this snippet, BenCol! Fascinating to think they were keeping Gardner up to date with the day to days of shooting and the screenplay changes. I would have assumed the novelisation would have been more of a promotional afterthought than something they'd have kept him so looped in on.

    • @jamesatkinsonja

      I remember you mentioning this exchange in the 'Licence' novelisation so I'm glad your put it here. I remember David Morrell saying for Rambo 3 the script was changing so much and he wanted to get on with writing the novelisation [as a family member was very ill and writing was his coping mechanism] he did a deal where he based his book on the first draft and ignored subsequent changes [hence his book includes a dutch female doctor who's not in the film and it stops being related about half way through].

    • @BenCol
      @BenCol Před 10 měsíci +6

      @@jamesatkinsonjaYeah, I remember stumbling across that interview and finding it really interesting - you rarely, if ever, get a behind-the-scenes look at the making of a book in the same way you do of a film (I suppose there's less to talk about, just one person with a word processor, but still, the process can be interesting). It's a shame Gardner's estate then decided to redo his website and take that interview off - thank goodness for the Wayback Machine!

    Oh, also, it only recently occurred to me that Goldeneye's prologue would be happening in Dalton's Bond's timeline (between TLD and LTK perhaps?), but I just now realised it would've been Robert Brown's M who sent him on that mission!

    • @JOSH-lw2jv
      @JOSH-lw2jv Před 10 měsíci +4

      I always viewed the 1986 prologue of *"GoldenEye"* as having take place after the Gibraltar prologue of *"The Living Daylights"* (which in my headcanon, as having take place in Early 1986 before the rest of the film was set in 1987).
      Sadly, according to the James Bond wiki of the *"GoldenEye"* novel, "The Old Man" was said
      to be based on Bernard Lee's M
      (Vice Admiral Sir Miles Messervy) - who was called "The Old Man" in the film *"Thunderball"* -
      rather than Robert Brown's M (Admiral Hargraves).

    • @jamesatkinsonja
      @jamesatkinsonja Před 10 měsíci +2

      Personally given 'Goldeneye' feels like it could have been a 'soft reboot' the time line doesn't bother me very much. Gardner's timeline doesn't include Living Daylights either [as there was no novelisation].

    • @jamesatkinsonja
      @jamesatkinsonja Před 10 měsíci +7

      @@JOSH-lw2jv Yes, M in the novels is always Sir Miles Messervy past Bernard Lee's 1981 death before the female M is introduced. Not that it maters but Brown's M being Hargreaves is a fan theory as it's never confirmed on screen [some older Bond reference books speculated if he was a re-cast Messervy or a different character entirely].
      Brown's M wears a 'Rear Admiral' uniform in 'Living Daylights' which might be the film makers attempting to show he's a different character from Bernard Lee's M [Vice Admiral] or Hargreaves [full admiral].

    I’d totally forgot about the Flicka reference in the novel! Though I wonder if that’s due to my first encounter with the novelization was the book on tape version I found on clearance at a bookstore in the early 2000s. A version that turned out to be fairly abridged, as I recall! Not that the novelization was terribly good or expanded upon things, not like Wood’s The Spy Who Loved Me or Benson’s Tomorrow Never Dies (which I suspect you’ll really enjoy when you get to it, Calvin!).
    My biggest surprise when reading the actual book version was in the final confrontation between Bond and Trevelyan. The exchange between them at the end changing Bond’s final line from “No, for me.” to “Go to hell!” or thereabouts felt anti-climactic.

    • @jamesatkinsonja
      @jamesatkinsonja Před 10 měsíci +2

      If I recall most 'books on tape' at the time were 3 hours long [two tapes] so a lot of things got cut and sometimes the abridgement didn't even sound like it was proof read as it made no sense! Of course, economics was a factor and audible doesn't need tones of tape to do it properly!

  • @BenCol
    @BenCol Před 11 měsíci +9

    I remember one thing in the book not in the film is Jack Wade's obsession with gardening. I'm guessing it was in the script and possibly even shot but then removed during editing - because we get Wade's line "d'you do any gardening?" in the final film but it's just an awkward non-sequitor. Now we know it was the set-up for a running joke that got cut. Quite frankly I'm glad the book explains the context of that line because it's always confused me what Wade meant - I always assumed, coming so soon after discussing Wade's embarrasing rose tattoo, that Wade was asking if Bond knew of a way to get rid of it.
    Strange why they didn't cut the "d'you do any gardening?" line if gardening was no longer part of his character. Maybe it would've been too harsh a cut. Maybe they thought it was still a funny line even in isolation.
    Or, possibly, it wasn't in the script and Gardner just decided to add it in to explain the gardening line.

    • @paulgeorge3915
      @paulgeorge3915 Před 11 měsíci +5

      In the TV series Edge Of Darkness, directed by Martin Campbell, Joe Don Baker's character was a big fan of the show Come Dancing (this was in the days before Strictly Come Dancing) and I've always presumed the gardening comment was related to establishing a similar quirky interest for Wade. For whatever reason it never made the final cut, although it does explain his appreciation of the banyan trees in the Carribbean.

      14:55 I remember him talking about gardening driving Bond in a short deleted scene [it was in the set Calvin reviewed when he was doing deleted scenes]. I remember Calvin at the time saying they probably though that was pushing the eccentricity too far but maybe it was a last minute cut as now you mentioned the 'orphaned references' it's a bit clumsy.

      They sorta left it in the film. When Wades giving Bond the gadgets he's distracted and goes "Banion trees". The first ones random yet funny, but the second time if you don't remember "Ya do any gardening?" it's just kinda odd.

    • @davidjames579
      @davidjames579 Před 10 měsíci +2

      Probably. In Ian Fleming’s novels they did have a really good relationship and that bond wants to make M happy and is at times actually careful not to upset him. Like in moonraker when M asks him to assist in catching Drax cheating at cards and he was like a bit embarrassed to do so and when they were at blades bond didn’t assert himself and order whatever he wanted, instead he wanted M to lead the way and show him around the club and at the end when M gives him a new gun because he lost his to the bad guys it means a lot to him. a second time in the short story “for your eyes only” when M asks bond to do the mission of capturing and killing the people who murdered Judy havelock’s parents it seemed more personal than just professional to M because he was the best man at their wedding and it shows how much he trusts BOND to do it instead of any other agent

Those for the Terminator and Gremilns are surprisingly and rewardingly good, filling in a lot of detail with purpose and imagination. Gremlins is particularly good - has passages of Spike's frustration with the physical limitations of being in Mogwai state. As a Bond fan, there is an element of presupposing an unbidden agency and innate ability on Bond's part. The cinema audience never needs to know what his internal machinations are, he just 'Bonds'. On paper, these writers cannot get past this essential appeal. It has no need of explanation, glad u critically saw the good and meh points in these. Thumbs up :)

In fairness, it could have been something cut out of this film and then re-purposed for TND as Bruce Feirnstein has a writing credit on both and the Bond series is fine cherry picking ideas to use [the opening of TND started out life in 'a draft of The Living Daylight's' for example].

    Does the novelisation inc the Tiger Helicopter doing a Loop-Da-Loop as it flies away from Monaco? It's in the GoldenEye Photo Story Book (although no photo), and was filmed as can be seen from the Teaser Trailer at 1.13 czcams.com/video/AN1bkIEs8oo/video.html They were savvy enough to remove it from the actual trailer, as it must have been cut from the film by then (the close up of the pilot doing a 180 was still inc, followed by the heli flying normally).

    3:52 The 'Goldeneye was written for Dalton' story you often hear online annoys me, mainly as it doesn't line up with the actual production of the film [given Brosnan was cast on 8th June 1994 and filming didn't start until 16 January 1995 while many writers worked on it] but also as the script is constantly changing during production [as shown by the minor differences here and for Tomorrow Never dies, the final draft was only finished less than 3 weeks before filming ending] so it was very much tailored towards Brosnan. Besides, while I understand Dalton fans would have loved to have had more, it's Brosnan's success story-let him have it!

    • @BenCol
      @BenCol Před 10 měsíci +4

      Yeah, it seems to depend on thinking Michael France's screenplay was the film we got. Michael France's first draft (available on Script Slug) is dated January 94 so that would've been written for Dalton, but that script is immensely different from the film we got - there's a reason France only got a 'story by' credit.

      I do like the Bond getting a review after retiring in Licence To Kill. Would have worked for Dalton, whereas a lot of people I think might take GoldenEye as a new Bond film unrelated to the previous (esp given the time that had passed).

    • @jamesatkinsonja
      @jamesatkinsonja Před 10 měsíci +2

      @@davidjames579 For sure you can see the review as a link back to Licence as it's still in continuity or you could see it as the new M wanting to evaluate Bond if it's a new start [given only Desmond returns for a brief scene]. For the later, I'd like to think M quickly deduced Bond seduced Caroline which might have influenced her 'sexist, misogynist dinosaur' comment as it's a bad first impression.

    • @davidjames579
      @davidjames579 Před 10 měsíci +1

      @@jamesatkinsonja It's clever enough or ambiguous enough that it can be inferred either way,. Tanner's Evil Queen Of Numbers line/M saying Bond thinks she's a bean counter fits in setting up M as doing evaluations to see where to cut costs and fat (a holdover from Dalton's Bond 17 script where it was M's boss doing this. This character and story element would be however still used, but much later in Spectre, with Max Denbigh. Although Never Say Never Again had already done the New Ideas M and cost cutting thing years before). Interestingly, Russian Defence Minister Mishkin was going to be a returning General Pushkin from The Living Daylights. I'm not sure if this was changed after Dalton bowed out or because John Rhys-Davies was unavailable. And as with General Gogol they saw no reason to re-cast the character.

    • @jamesatkinsonja
      @jamesatkinsonja Před 10 měsíci +1

      @@davidjames579 I definitely get the feeling May Day in View was a response to Fatima in NSNA being popular [the actress was golden globe nominated] and Goldeneye has Xenia and the laser watch as well as the 'new broom' M. In a post cold war world, cutting costs etc was a topical concern [Tom Clancy's 'Debt of Honor' has characters moaning about budget cuts every 10 pages or so!] so it makes sense to keep it.
      After Dalton's departure, I think they wanted to push the 'soft reboot' angle and keep references to a minimum so Puskin was removed. The 'Ministry of Defense' was also in the script-presumably Geoffrey Keen-but he was also dropped so it feels an conscious decision. Puskin still being referred to as KGB in the France script is an error as the organisation was abolished by this point after the real life KGB chairman was involved in the attempted August 1991 coup [eventually replaced by the FSB] and of course the Soviet Union had collapsed by this point so it would be a massive stretch he'd still be there and not removed in the 'clear out'.

Certainly NATO, military and intelligence people on the ship could recognise him. I also don't see him doing his own dirty work as a getaway driver. I finished this book a few days ago. I am aware of the book being based on the screenplay and it feels like there is animosity from John Gardner to the film makers. As though he felt insulted that they went with an original story as opposed to any of his books. I especially felt this with how flippant he was with the new M. There is a large difference between personal disapproval while being professional to the person's face and being borderline subordinate flat out. Bond was the latter of the two. He would have never said those things to the old M even if they didn't get on. Do you think this was questionable writing or was the author venting frustration? In regards to Cold... good luck.

      Eon have only ever had the rights to Fleming's material so Gardener's books were never going to be adapted [hence suggestions of doing any of the Horowitz books for example won't lead to anything]. Another comment mentioned in an interview that Gardner said he didn't enjoy doing the LTK novelisation due to the endless script changes so it's probably more a lack of enthusiasm with having to do another one [as the official Bond author he was 'contractual obliged to do it] and how he had to mess with his own continuity [particularly with Flicka and having to use the male Q rather than Qu'te in LTK].
      The book 'The Bond Files' highlighted that Bond at one point goes 'Don't be so bloody melodramatic' as a dig at the lines Gardner didn't like. It reminded me of the digs had towards the 'Stinger Missiles' plot line in LTK.
      Of course, as Cold features the old M [as it's a prequel], this is the only time Gardner writers the female M. It would have been interesting to see how he'd have written the character if he'd carried on for a few more books.

Instead they re-issued Fleming's Casino Royale and then put all the short stories together under 'Quantum of Solace' for that film.

So... probably a different island that was in range of the Cessna that Wade swapped Bond the Z3 for.
      That being said, the closest neighbour to Cuba in the Caribbean is Haiti...but I'd discount that option due to geopolitical conditions at the time. The next two closest options are Jamaica or The Bahamas, and I'd lean on the latter since the Z3 would be less inconspicuous there, IMO.
