  • A list with some of the most successful German tank commanders from World War II.
There are more German tank aces but I could not include them all because there are dozens of sources who give different tank kill numbers.
In this video I tell their story in brief. I wish I had a good microphone and speak fluently English, otherwise I would probably have done it with a voice over. I hope you don't mind reading!

Knispel had killed more than 168 tanks. However, whenever another tank commander claimed to have shot at the same tank that Knispel did, he let the other guy have the kill. He was a true gentleman.

Just for a contrast: Hans-Ulrich Rudel (2 July 1916 - 18 December 1982) was a German ground-attack pilot during World War II, in which he was the most decorated German serviceman and the only recipient of the Knight's Cross with Golden Oak Leaves, Swords, and Diamonds.
Rudel was credited with the destruction of 519 tanks, one battleship, one cruiser, 70 landing craft and 150 artillery emplacements. He claimed 51 aerial victories and the destruction of more than 800 vehicles. He flew 2,530 ground-attack missions exclusively on the Eastern Front, usually flying the Junkers Ju 87 "Stuka" dive bomber.

Frederik Henriksen I can agree with you but you must remember that the Panther had rather thin 40mm armour on the sides, always a sore point, 16mm top making it vulnerable to artillery and an increasly vulnerable mantlet to the newer tanks with more powerful cannons. Basically the Panther had to avoid long distance duels with the IS-2 because of it's thick armour but the Panther had the great advantage of having a good rate of fire and was very precise. Unfortunately I saw some effects on some photos of the Panthers of from the 122 mm hits that was truly devastating, not for nothing the Russians called it's cannon the "smasher" but suffered from a very low rate of fire. Yep, I do prefer the Panther...

Great recap. I am currently finishing a movie script based on the most accomplished tank ace of all time, Kurt Knispel.
You do a great job of showing how he was his own man and never suffered from a “sore throat”. He gave away another shared/unconfirmed kills (37) in addition to his 168 confirmed kills. On the way the eastern front , Kurt got “in trouble” when he forcibly stopped a SS Guard from brutalizing a Russian POW. He was the only man in his unit to step forward. That is a big reason he never saw the Knights Cross. He is an example to us all that, ultimately (even in war) we are responsible to do the right thing. Kurt Knispel showed incredible courage in his choices on and off the battlefield. My family has five generations of military service (myself, Vietnam Era, my dad WW2, my grandad WW1, and current daughter and hubbie USAF Afghanistan)). We SALUTE Kurt as a warrior who lived and died with a strong personal code of conduct. He died about 100 miles from where he was born in the last week of the war as a Tiger II commander. Then he was forgotten.

Thanks for a fine, brief video that also recognized Knispel as being a cut above the usual run of war heroes. A note on pronunciation: German does not have silent letters or syllables, so if it's there, it's pronounced. Thus (phonetically) K(h)nispel, SudAYtenland, Luftwaffe(h), Porsche(h) etc., even though this last does not occur here. Now some troll will say, "I don't give a [bleeep:expletive deleted] how German is pronounced." Fine. But my comment isn't addressed to trolls, and I doubt YOU will take that attitude.

At last a correct documentation of the best of the best in the German Panzer forces. Kurt Knispel was not only the ace of all German tank aces, he was also a real human being, as a non Nazi who always saw fair play in what he did. He was admired by all of his commanders that looked after him and recommended him many times for the ultimate knights cross that he was prevented from receiving by the block headed Hitlerite's due to his humanistic behaviour and free thinking attitude. However he had the last laugh as nobody in the higher command could afford to do without Kurt and his unique talents. It was such a shame that he died so close to the end of the war, a few more days and he would have been such a revered ace by all sides, as he is now even more so by his heroic death.
