  • Plant pathologist Rachel Warmington argues that we should not overlook fungi, explaining the many ways they can improve our lives, from life saving drugs to getting rid of plastics.
    Rachel is the plant pathologist at Cornwall’s award-winning Eden Project, where she is responsible for detection and control of plant diseases, as well as keeping an eye on soil health. She completed a PhD at Warwick University, working on a fungal pathogen that affects more than 400 plant species, for which she was awarded the Marsh Horticultural Science Award in 2013. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

    That was beautiful. Thank you. Yes, all metazoa is more closely related to Fungi than plants because we are both heterotrophs. It's incredible to see the evolutionary bifurcation of heterotrophic eukaryotes. The way each branch has come to create locomotion always amazes me.

    How do we know that exactly 93% of fungi species are not known, when we don't know the exact number of fungi species?

    • @iluan_
      @iluan_ Před 5 lety +17

      We don't know it with 100% certainty, but we can do a very good estimation using a technique called "rarefaction curve". Let me explain. Imagine you and your team of scientist just arrived at a forest that has never been explored and you want to know how many species of fungi live there. The first year you start searching you'll find a lot of species that had not previously been reported, since you are the first ones doing the reporting. The second year you'll find some more new species but you'll also find the same species you already reported. As you keep exploring the forest over the years, your team will start noticing that with each passing year, you'll encounter less and less species that you have never reported before. So you make a plot with "years*number of scientists" on the X axis and "number of species found" on the Y axis. This curve is called a rarefaction curve. What you'll see on your rarefaction curve is that first it grows fast, and then it starts at a certain level. Basically, it's a logarithmic curve that tends towards a certain value on the Y axis (asymptote) but never quite reaches it. Using a regression and some basic calculus, you can make a good estimation of how many species you'll end up finding if you kept exploring for infinite years (assuming no foreign species moves into the forest).
      Now, let's say your team used only direct observation as your method of identification, and a new team decides to repeat your exploration using better tools (i.e., metagenomic analysis of soil). Their rarefaction curve will start growing faster, and they might even find species you never saw, but in the end they'll also end with a logarithmic curve with an asymptote in the Y axis.
      Now imagine that different teams keep looking for new species using different methods and now you have many rarefaction curves. You'll see that when the curves are extended to infinite years of searching, they'll all end up around a similar value. That value is the predicted maximum number of species. So, if the rarefaction curves say that there should be approximately 100 species in the forest, and you have found 90, you can say that you have found about 90% of the species in the forest. To do the same on a global scale, we take all the rarefaction curves made for all known ecosystems, and we adjust for the percentage of the Earth surface that each ecosystem occupies, we can make a rarefaction curve for the whole planet and thus have a good estimation of how many unknown species are to discover.
