    Often I have to bring a suit for work. Tip: wear your suit on the plane with just a black t-shirt under the jacket. Take the jacket off on the plane. When you get to your destination, hotel etc., change immediately. Buy a suit that is neutral and basic in color and you can wear it more than once without anyone noticing. Bring different colored dress shirts and ties to change your daily look.

    A very useful and informative video. Thanks for sharing your traveling wisdom and experience. I’ve always thought along the same lines but wasn’t sure if I was adopting the right approach. It’s great to know that other experienced travelers are on the same page. Packing everything in a small carry on bag takes some planning and creative strategies, but it’s an incredibly rewarding and hassle-free way to be on the go.

    •  Před rokem +2

      That's kind, thank you. I also find that dirty clothes seem to take up more room somehow 😑

    I have to say, I just checked out the bag you mention, and their website specifies that it weighs 4.3kg / 9.5 lbs...! that seems very heavy. Many airlines in economy have a 7kg carry-on limit, which this bag alone would take up the vast majority of. Many other carry-ons are between 2-2.5 kgs. In my last 2-week trip I went back to my younger years and just used a backpack, which alone weighed less than 1 kg, which gave me much more capacity towards the 7kg limit. Happy travels!

    •  Před rokem

      Yeah I try to avoid those fares/carriers for the most part. The nickel and diming is silly and it gets to a point where the inconvenience outweighs the ✌️value✌️.

    It's been 10 years since I _lugged_ wheeled luggage through an airport and I don't regret a single trip.
    In the beginning of my career when I didn't have to pay for checked luggage I had very heavy Briggs and Riley wheeled luggage and was desperate for a red cap at every airport.
    After years of personal and business travel I now refuse to have a wheeled bag.
    It appears that wheel bags started somewhere around the seventies with a little leash (ironically at the bottom of the bag which just meant that the bag tipped over) .. and then all we saw for decades were wheeled bags. Give me a 40 litre convertible carry-on any day.
    Wheel bags make me walk crooked and I have to switch off my hands left and right, but most importantly for me.. wheel bags make an annoying clunck clunck clunck noise on the sidewalk.
    When I get off of a plane or train I want to walk to my hotel, I want the exercise and I want to take in the new city of the day but hearing that clunk clunk clunk behind me.. no thanks!

    •  Před rokem

      So are you talking about those weekender bags? I'd love to see an example of what you're talking about.

    Great tips, and really enjoyed this format! Compression cubes are great combined with the roll packing method - gets you a little extra space!
    Looking forward to seeing what you pack, including toiletries. I have this mini "spa kit" I take on every long haul flight - cleansing wipes, moisturiser, hand cream, eye drops, lip balm, etc. Skin and eyes really dry out on those flights, but this little routine every few hours makes a big difference - women and men both!
    Thanks for the video Alex!

  • @SanTM
    @SanTM Před rokem +2

    I used compression cubes, they are like packing cubes but have a double zip that squeeze out all the excess air and space. For things like underwear and socks it's great, and rolled up tees too.

    Here's a tip for laundry, bring a dry bag. Place the dirty clothing in the bag, fill with hot water and detergent. Agitate the outside by mashing the dry bag and you should have the best sink laundry system.
    For packing cubes include some dryer sheets to keep them smelling fresh

    •  Před rokem

    The Carl Friedrik is a nice looking carry-on, BUT if you value what the handle feels like, look elsewhere. The handle is as loose and jiggly as a bag you’d buy of AliExpress. It’s a shame, as the rest of the case is really nice. I really wanted to keep it, however I ended up with a Travelpro platinum Elite carryon (the one that the NYT recommends), and it’s night and day higher quality, especially the handle (no rattle, solid). Yes, it’s not hard-sided, and doesn’t have the latches, but it looks great, and will last! (Hopefully).

    Bring laundry strips and wash your clothes :) my husband and I usually spend between 3-4 weeks in locations when we travel, so there’s no way to pack my carry on for that. However, you can make use of local laundromats or washers/dryers (often a staple of business hotels or hostels). In a pinch you can also wash your clothes by hand and hang to dry with a collapsing hanger that has hooks (I can easily fit this in the bottom of my carry on). This helps save space, and makes room for other items that might be more important than that extra pair of pants ;)

    Cubes look great, I have not tried them.
    We will be using carry-on backpacks for a month long Europe trip next month. A tip: space bags- compressing the air out keeps each type of clothing fresh, and they take up minimal room. Just an alternative to cubes, depending on the type of trip, dry and airtight will make a difference for us.
    Great videos- thanks.

    Looking forward to seeing the what you pack. Two questions do you always bring a dedicated rain jacket and what do you think about weekender bags vs rolling luggage for regional airports and a week. Seems that would shove in an overhead of smaller planes better than the CF.

  • @Mrmoulin1
    @Mrmoulin1 Před rokem +6

    Totally agree! I’m in India on a 3 week, multi destination trip and it’s a backpack and carry on for me. Packing cubes are a must. One other tip of where to stow your carry on once on board. Always forward of where you are sitting, so if you are in 17A, stow it above row 15, as most times you will exit the front door so you are heading that way anyway. Stow it aft of your row and you are battling against the tsunami of people trying to disembark. Obvious!

    •  Před rokem +2

      Yes but only if it's not TOO far ahead of where you're sitting! 😂

  • @steveweaverca
    @steveweaverca Před rokem +1

    Similar to Monty Mars's suggestion, in cool climate seasons, I like to wear boots. Therefore, I'll wear them on the plane to save space in my luggage. Also, if I need a heavier jacket, I do the same. I live in California, so sometimes I'm leaving on a warm sunny day, but it's worth saving space.

    •  Před rokem +1

      Yeah absolutely, I'll always wear my bulkiest shoes and pack whatever is most compact. Unless I'm in shorts. Shorts and boots aren't the best look.

    I lay my underpants and vests flat and unfolded on top of each other, because they're thin, and then roll them up into a big fat roll. It takes up a lot less space than rolling each individual piece.

    I like to bring no more than a weeks worth of clothes and do my best to stretch those out as far as I can.. and stay in a place that has a laundry or find a cheap local laundry service. Even in London we found a cleaners that would do our laundry for much cheaper than the cost of checking one more bag.

    • @stevebalestreri7427
      @stevebalestreri7427 Před rokem

      I'm curious what a week's worth of clothes are for you? Also, I was just in Italy and Slovenia for about 40 days.. and to be honest it would have taken 3 to 5 hrs to find a laundromat, wash, dry and come back on a bus or walking. So I washed my clothes by hand in the sink or badet with very hot water. The other thing I do on a long trip is take clothes you'd see golfers wearing, that are very light and dry super fast. So for 40 days, a variety of 5 shirts, 4 pairs of shorts, 1 beach towel, 1 swim trunks and a light pair of water shoes. The 4/5 shirts/shorts are including the ones I am wearing. I don't use cubes, but instead a heavier plastic bag for each matched outfit with socks. And they're rolled. I put everything in bags, because I once had a bottle of wine break in my luggage on the way back from Spain. I also bring a very small medical kit with a small bottle of peroxide and rubbing alcohol as well as a small bottle of Tide from the dollar store

    •  Před rokem
