If an object measuring 1 km across were to hit our planet, the consequences would be much graver. There were precedents in the history of our Earth and there is no guarantee it will not happen again. Over a thousand celestial bodies are posing a potential threat today. So what would happen if a really large asteroid were to collide with us?

Most certainly this is the gravest danger to humanity and all living things on Earth. Asteroid impacts have happened before to our planet multiple times and it is only a matter of time before it happens again. We should be focusing all of our efforts on formulating a defense to combat these threats and also working towards settling other planets as currently we have a single point of failure and we should look at ways to ensure the survival of humanity should the worst happen. Its also interesting to consider that we may have little to no warning of a potential impact as the asteroid may be hidden by the Suns luminescence if it approaches from that direction.

I'm curious is it because of the speed that the size can be so small but yet so devastating? Because I cannot imagine such a small object causing so much devastation

Can’t find any actual simulation of an impact. If it hits the ocean we might be able to build something to lessen the destruction.
