Ghost of Tsushima's Director's Cut adds a meaningful chapter to Jin's personal saga, but Iki Island will likely feel a little too familiar to anyone that's already played though the main game. The PS5 upgrades are subtle but welcomed improvements, and while they don't demand another play through of the game, they will certainly will make another play through more enjoyable.

I can't explain well enough to people with PS4s how much bliss and relief you get playing on a PS5 turning your head to realise the only sound in the room is coming from the TV :') I literally had my PS5 on for 30 minutes on the first day just sitting there because I was enjoying there being no sound.
The heat difference is also night and day, on summer days I'd literally be in shorts, no top, door open, window, ceiling fan, desk fan and be sweating because of the PS4 heat, let alone going to a different room felt like it was actually cold. PS5 literally can't tell any difference in temperature when its on or off.
@@CB-lw7ty Hmm. My PS4 Slim is quiet, cool, and isn't a giant humidifier. Are these loud PS4 complaints from Pro and original PS4 owners? Still underwhelmed by my ps5 in general, exacerbated by the $ony tax. Maybe I'll go play some Hades while I wait for Psychonauts 2 on my series X. Hopefully when these are PlayStation Hits they'll be worth it.

Every version of PS4 can be quiet after replacing thermal paste.
The biggest improvement overall for me is the menus - damn the PS4 displays "please wait" so often I thought I'd get image retention 😜. But a fantastic little machine that provided great value when I got the spider man version a couple of years ago.
Really appreciated the way you answered the question: is the directors cut worth going back and playing the game again? I don’t remember seeing this question answered as thoughtfully as you did in other folks reviews of “director’s cut” editions, if at all. Should be a standard question for such editions.
It’s a 20$ dlc of a game that already has loads of content. The question doesn’t need some video essay for an answer. Just a answer with a few reasons. Relax bud.

@@hartfantom I think you misunderstand. I’m not dissing anyone and definitely not criticizing the game. Amazing game and their multiplayer DLC fantastic. I’m just referring to the one line in the video,where he specifically answers this question and says that he feels the DLC alone doesn’t really warrant a revisit to the game because it doesn’t really change enough, BUT the game itself is SO good it’s worth it just for that.
So it answered the very question I was wondering. I’m actually starting to jones for a little Ghost of T, so I’ll likely buy it just to sprinkle it’s sparkles on my replay, BUT I won’t be disappointed by the fact that it really doesn’t bring as big of gameplay or location changes as the multiplayer DLC did.
A little tip: I Ignored your douchey “relax” response because everyone has a bad day. Giving you a chance to have a decent convo. But try to avoid attacking people who are just offering an innocuous opinion. Even if I did think the DLC is not worth it, it’s childish to attack someone just because you disagree with them. I'm really excited to play this again. Honestly the lip syncing problem never bothered me cuz I was too busy reading what they said to watch their mouth.
While I didn't like the fact they didn't bother to capture or include the animations and especially now they made it PS5-exclusive (for "technical reasons" LOL), I can only pretend that it's similar to those old movies where they had to dub and it looks horribly out-of-sync anyway. - And yea, having to read kind of distracts from that. But while it seems you're probably in an English-speaking country, I'm Dutch and I grew up with subtitles, so I'm really fast to scan text and still catch the performance. I mean, it's hard to "fool myself". - Plus, I'm still just annoyed that they're kinda going "screw PS4 (players) and make it PS5-only" as if that's just OK for the sake of marketing. - Whatever argument anyone wants to have about "it can only be done with the PS5" doesn't make sense, as they could just dump the animation-tracks onto the PS4 as well, one way or another. And if that increases the size a lot (which I kind of doubt would be extreme), they could make it optional. It's not like the sizes of games like "GTA5", "CoD: MW", and "AC: Valhalla" are optional with their roughly 100GB of data. I believe "GoT" is about half of that. (Not that I think it SHOULD be 100GB, but why is it acceptable from those and not this supposed "better game"?)

Same. The expression and intonation is much better in Japanese. English is surprisingly good compared to most other games set in Japan, but still.
I started the game, last night and I had it on Japanese with English subtitles, to make it feel more authentic and immersive but I had to turn it off after a short while and change to spoken English. Simply because it’s hard to watch the cut scene and read the text at bottom of screen. Like if someone is angry, upset etc I want to see the expression on their face because it makes it more impactful. I got to 1 part where I’m walking and talking with some guy and the scenery was beautiful, I wanted to hear what he was saying and admire the view and I just couldn’t, so I turned off Japanese voice. I’m really enjoying the game and if I decide to do a 2nd play through, I will use Japanese voice because I’ll already know the story.

Agreed! I kind of like the idea of them going back to focusing on electricity again! That could look so awesome with HDR and the spark particle effects the PS5 could offer. Hopefully it's their next project.

Man the story in this game really got to me, and for those who played know the final choice you make at the end is truly a beautiful moment filled with great scenery and emotions
Easily one of the best final bosses of the previous gen. Also, one of the best title cards of all time.

I played it at 1080p 30fps on the base ps4, I got a ps5 3 weeks ago, and the day before I was going to replay it at 60fps, the directors cut was announced. So hyped for dynamic 4k 60

I feel the size of the map is perfect, doesn't feel like a chore to play.
It’s honestly the perfect open world map. It’s big and has a lot of content but it’s dense and honed in to the point that it’s actually designed.

I went into Iki Island as soon as it was available, and knew I shouldn’t have when the game mentioned that the main bad guy was dead. I fought the Eagle with the Sarugami armor.
yeah i was surprised at that oversight. because everything else is so carefully lined up. seems weird that they didnt consider people may go as soon as the mission became available.
3:58 I think the new features of the dualsense controller are like music or sound design in a game or movie. Like it's not the main thing you're focusing on the whole time, but it's a great tool to trigger emotions and increase the immersion. And it's simply a little more fun. It's not the most important thing, but it can elevate the experience a lot.

Honestly even though I'm still on an achievement hunt to 100% the game I'll still always come back for that excellent sword combat because it is on a level all on its own with how unique it is compared to most games
I really wish they added the option to perform a mystic art after a perfect parry. Its something so simple, but a cinematically satisfying idea and a great way to add to the combos. It's only a personal wish to hope for expanded combat beyond just having new abilities.

I recently got a PS5 as a gift. And ghost of Tsushima was one of the games on my “PlayStation classic catch up list” After completing it and eventually going on to platinum the game I can say I loved this game.
I’m especially glad I waited until the ps5 came around to play this. The vibrations and haptic feedback brought my Samurai/Ronin experience to a whole new level . Plus I went a an hour on iki island before I realised I was playin a dlc (stupid I know) this game is incredible and so glad I experienced it

Two very big additions to the game are the R1 R2 soulslike control scheme and target locking which not alot of reviews are mentioning.

After playing the base game, the pre-order for the Directors Cut and PS5 (when it drops later tonight for me) is a no-brainer. I waited for over 35 years for a Samurai/Ninja open world game and what I got was very special.
How TF do I buy on ps5? Do I need to buy the ps4 directors cut upgrade (I own the base game) and then at release upgrade again to the ps5 version?

Make a review for Death Stranding Director's Cut when it comes out
Not sure if anyone else has noticed, but from the recent patches for the game that are preparing for the directors cut and dlc, the "sheathe" animation now contains the animation that Jin does when he beats the rebel ronin in their duels. Also they seem to have added a few more assassination animations when the tanto is fully upgraded - has anyone else noticed this? I love it.
Digital Foundry just released their analysis of the PS5 director's cut. The main upgrade is that the game is now checkerboard 2160p, full 4K. Where is the PS4 pro version was checkerboard 1800p. And of course the game is 60fps
Great review. I personally like the base story single player mode more than I do legends. I love legends too don't get me wrong but I really like the grounded approach of realism in the he main story also not being confined to a certain route as well. But yes this game is amazing, how about that new replay encounter update as well?

So, basically you can skip the upgrade if you've already played the PS4 version on a PS5, unless you really care about haptic feedback, the Japanese lip sync or the slightly higher resolution.

I played through most of this game last summer on PS4 Pro. Now that I have a PS5, I got the game loaded up and ready for the director's cut tomorrow. Since you can find the base game for around $20 now, the $30 asking price for the PS5 upgrade is more than fair.
The way you talk about how the multiplayer expanded gameplay in fun ways and wishing for some of that variety in singleplayer reminds me of Mass Effect 3.
I like the classes in ME3 but in the multiplayer they expanded the system with so many new classes and abilities. Singleplayer classes felt kinda limited after playing multiplayer.
Too late, I already pre-ordered it. But I'm glad you let me know I didn't make a mistake, its always so risky preordering these days. But the base game was so good I don't think it could've gone wrong anyway.

Hey, nice video! I may have missed it, but does the PS5 version use the new PS5 collectibles guide feature? (Or whatever it's called, you know that tile that shows you what you still have to collect and how to in AstroBot for example) It'd be awesome if I could track every collectible using only the PS5 without having to search in my phone.
I love haptic feedback stuff. It’s some of the coolest immersive stuff you can add for games that already look so beautiful.

I love how the review has to explain all the upgrade nuances at the beginning. Sony, you really, really fucking needed to offer a feature like smart delivery. Charge for your dlc all you want, but please stop it with this upgrade complexity nonsense.

@@Alien_Informant Yeah, but for xbox, it costs nothing and I need to understand nothing and I get the same current gen consoles upgrades. The entire process is transparent, and reviews don't have to waste 1 minute re-explaining it.
I don't care about the console war - I own both consoles - but in this one case, Sony just fucked this up and their greed ended up making their #1 competitor look way better. Actually, there's quite a lot of features on Series X that are better, but Smart Delivery is easily at the top of the list.

Bad enough that PS5 doesn’t have a Smart Delivery system to begin with, but to financially exploit it shows Sony is now just as scummy with nickel and diming as other triple A publishers. We really shouldn’t be giving this any kind of approval as PlayStation users.

But I agree with your main point--Sony is drifting away from consumer friendliness with this bundled "Director's Cut" stuff. The PS5 upgrade to the GoT base game should be free, and then Iki island should just be $20 paid DLC for everyone. It would be a lot simpler.
Yeah agreed. Tho it's really crappy to charge for ps5 upgrade, atleast 60 fps is free. Putting 4k behind a paywall was crappy, but everything else in ps5 upgrade is fine to pay for. And yeah it's unnecessarily complex, but only for ghost, for other games it's not complex
Can't wait for it. Also, you said it wasn't mentioned but the controller playing sound on the ps5 for this game is not new, I played the game 4 months ago and it did it too for the wind
The infinite supply glitch from chests no longer works in directors cut. I haven't tested going from IZUHARA to TOYOTAMA before act 2 of the story to get unlimited wax wood, iron, steel, leather and linen from a mongol base but I suspect that glitch would be patched in the directors cut as well. It's Unfortunate that you can no longer grind loot easily, you have to spend time, many hours riding your horse around all 3 Tsushima's Islands looking for loot.
Highly looking forward to playing this for the first time on PS5, I wish Iki Island was a bit longer because a tester previously said it was 15-20 hours, but I can't judge it on that obviously.
You are gonna have a blast. The combat is so good. The environments looks stunning as well on a 4k display.
for a $20 (if you own the base game already) its super duper worth since InFamous Second Son's max gameplay 8-10 hours for the first playthrough
15-20hr is good value for a story expansion. The entirety of SP Miles Morales was only 8hr for me

I really would like to play through this again, but with an ever growing backlog and limited time to play, along with the price of this version, I can't justify buying it again/playing through it again. Hope new buyers of it enjoy the game!

The price is 100% completely fair. The 20 hour expansion alone is worth 30 bucks. The Ps5 enhancements are just the icing on the cake.

With a good 4k tv, I have a sony bravia master series OLED, the resolution upgrade looks seriously good. I replayed through 3/4s of the game on ps5 with the free updates prior to getting the expansion... and I wish I had got it prior to starting my new playthrough. I wasn't sure I wanted to pony up the 30 bucks, but it looks WAY better with the paid expansion and you really notice it after playing 20 hrs without it. You see the details SOO much better. The blood on Jin's blade during a standoff, little details on the armor, even dropped weapons and dead enemies just look more 3d... for lack of a better term. Everything just stands out so much more. And idk how much they messed with the sound but it does sound quite a bit better. Worth it if you love the game

The multiplayer is incredible and every1 shud experience it, try to max ur lvl since the end game content is the best

I love that it’s in English. I mean it’s cool they added that for people who value listening to the Japanese and I can get how it might make someone’s experience better. But for me the English is better after all it’s what I speak. And that’s what makes me feel more immersed. After all they would be hearing their native tongue as wel.

All I can think about is how amazing the ghost multiplayer would have been if they did that mp for infamous which clearly they were interested. You could easily tell with all the extra stuff they started adding during infamous 2

Lets me answer myself and all of you asking the same question. Spoiler ahead:
After about 2 hours of playing i followed the legend of Sakura Armor (name might not be accurately remembered) and if you wanna get that armor, you have to win a duel. So yeah, there are new duels :-)
And that new Armor is crazy good for duels btw....havent had the chance to test it in a duel yet, but I think it'll wreck every opponent 1 on 1.
Boughy my first PlayStation ever end of May, managed to not overpay too much for a ps5 all digital, picked up Ghost of Tsushima cheap during the summer sale but the DC got announced so I decided to play other games and hold off till this was released, couldn't wait and started playing the base game a couple weeks ago. Loving it so far, near the end of act 1 with maybe half of the first island cleared. Def upgrading to the ps5 DC asap!

@@Tekeysix I was playing ratchet and clank 2016, rift apart, made it through all the Nathan Drake collection and just started uncharted 4. I was also playing Dirt5 and persona5 royal, but just gave up after being stuck at the space port boss, tried on merciless like people recommend but still couldn't, I'll come back and finish it someday but needed a break from jrpgs. I beat Yakuza like a dragon on PC and was playing FF X/x-2 on switch right before I got the ps5.
@@deadhead4077 nice choice. I can highly recommend GoW series, TLOU1 and 2 and Bloodborne. Most of these are free anyway on ps5. but if that's too much than just focus on GoW3, GoW2018 and Bloodborne.
@@Tekeysix thanks! Appreciate the recommendations, I've already got god of war 2018 downloaded and so ready to dive in after Ghosts. And I def want to make Bloodborne my first real souls like after loving Jedi fallen order. So many games to catch up on so little time
@@deadhead4077 yeah bloodborne is imo the best souls like, but be warned, I only played jedi fallen order for a few hours and it's way easier. but if the game catches you, then buy the old hunters dlc and play it before fighting the final boss of main game.
It looks like they re used the blood priest animations for the shaman which I think is clever I'm excited to re visit Ghosts especially for multilayer
I loved what I played of Ghost of Tsushima. I dropped it somewhere in act 2 I think, but I did a lot of side content. Not sure why I stopped, maybe I was stronger than I should have been for the main story content or maybe I just played enough and was done. I think I'll definitely go back and start over and finish the game, maybe I'll just wait until I buy a PS5 and play it on that for the improvements.

Both consoles have good games. Xbox is getting Halo and Forza this fall. You guys will have lots content to play in the next 4 months.
It's a good time to be a gamer. Loving flight simulator on Xbox right now. Feels like learning a new skill rather than playing a game. Halo gonna be awesome, looking forward to vanguard, but mostly battlefield portal and reliving the bf3 days

Looks good tho I am really disapointed in Sony on how they handled most of the PS4 to PS5 upgrades. With Xbox you mostly just get the upgrade without having to fork over more cash.

The way they handle it is identical. The only ones you have to pay for have actual improvements.
@@fhdez91 Its not. Almost all oof my games on Xbone that had a next gen upgrade dropped for free, especially the exclusives. Both Spiderman and Ghost here required payments for an upgrade.
@@belsamethtaken4107 you’re talking about boosts in res and frame rate. Spider-Man changed the main character, for some odd reason, and added ray tracing at 60fps. And GoT had a “free upgrade” months ago along with Legends mode. Same with TLOU2 and GoW. This time GoT is a port to run natively on the ps5, for instant loading, controller and audio features, and so cut scenes can run real time to sync Japanese voices.
I love when games use the ps5 controller to deliver great sounds. Like the humming of a blade in Shadow of war when executing an Uruk. Or the clang of blades when getting a parry in ghost. Pure gold for the ears.
Not so great when you have headphones that don't let that much sound in. A contradiction since their special audio feature required headphones
@@semitope shadow of war solves that by raising the volume of those sounds into the headphones and not the controller.

I wouldn't mind trying the DLC at some point later on, but I am not a fan of the $10 asking price for features that could have been added for free to current owners of Ghost of Tsushima.
To be honest, it’s pretty worth it considering how much love was put into the game and all the free content Sucker Punch has been giving everybody already.

I have the regular PS4 digital edition from last year and preordered the digital director cut on my ps5 a near month ago. Yet still don’t see where to download the ps5 version? Only the PS4 bonus content option appears.

I played the game on an OG PS4, so I feel like it’s going to look like a new game for me when I get to play it on my Ps5 when it comes out. I never played past the first island bc I 100% finished it and it kind of burnt me out. I can’t wait for this

I always look up to your review and really happy the way you present your video..But this DLC/ps5 is skip for me as of now. It just seems to be a slap on people buying game on Day 1.

7:01 ~ I bought the Director’s Cut edition for PS5. I set it to show English subtitles with Japanese spoken dialogue, yet the mouths of the characters spoke English anyway, so I saw no Japanese lip-sync. That was on the day of launch; today, two days’ later, and after an update this morning, the Japanese lip-sync is working. However, the spoken conversations of incidental NPCs that are to be heard when Jin is within earshot are also in Japanese, but without English subtitles. This diminishes immersion for me, even though what they say is inconsequential, so I’ve switched to English spoken dialogue, so as not to feel I’m not part of this world. Pity.

They are getting away with it. They made sure not to let you upgrade the base PS4 game with ps5 features directly so it's not obvious you're paying for a patch. They hide the shenanigans behind "directors cut"

One main issue i have is with the cat sanctuary mini game.
My controller doesn't have motion control so I can't compete them.
I stopped my first play through just as they announced this version. just so I can experience the rest of the story with the new enhancements for my ps5. The PS5 is such a marvel of a controller for action adventure games.

I just started playing this game and I’m a bit unsure what missions to do first. Like is it possible to do it in wrong order and have a messed up story? Also, I got 1 mission to help some lady rescue her brother and apparently he can fix up my gear but this mission is right at the bottom of the map and where I am now on the map, there’s other missions and question marks and I’m unsure if it’s better to do these activities, then make my way down the map to rescue the lady’s brother . Or ignore these missions and go straight to lady’s bro. Does it matter what order I do it in?
Personally, I know people love this game and I can see why. But I never felt the hype and polish people raved about. To me, in alot of ways this game feels kinda unpolished and dry.
