Words can't explain the way Daniel Barenboim plays. All of his performances leave me and many others speechless. As a player of Beethoven, I think this performance is a very good interpretation of the classical style and periodic characteristics which come with it. Excellent job D.B!
I agree... Barenboim's tempo is just perfect. I play this sonata but I just can't repeat the deepness and the expression that his tempo causes. He said once that he sees this first movement like a death march, a funeral march. That may help. Great version.
If it takes so much genius to just play it right, how much does it take to write it! This is a glimpse at what the human brain at its best can do. It makes you proud to belong to the specie! Eternally live Beethoven! Long Live Barenboim!
I find the process of learning a piano piece so interesting. It is like learning a language; once you've studied, understood, dissected, and memorized the notes, they become part of your musical vocabulary.
I recently had an argument with a friend of mine about this version of the 1st movement of Moonlight Sonata. I personally love it because Barenboim plays it so dreamy like, he drags the notes and doesn’t stay faithful to the score’s tempo thus colouring the entire piece in a unique way. My friend found that approach completely unacceptable and something that YOU SHOULD NEVER DO. He said that by not sticking to the score’s time signatures he alters the piece significantly to the point that deviates extremely from the composer’s original vision. To quote him: “that is the worst version of Moonlight Sonata I have ever heard, if I played it in that manner in front of my piano teacher she would shower would go bananas!!!” I can see his side of the argument but for some reason (don’t know why, maybe because he is Barenboim) I cannot share it. Anyone’s thoughts? Note: I also love Kempf’s version which sticks closer to the score. But Barenboim’s and Gilels are my two favorites.
this is the best by far interpretation of this piece I have ever heard. it is slow and sensual and soulful.. most people play a faster tempo but barenboim nails it
I always liked my father to play this for me (the first movement) when I was very young. Though I would say "play moon knights and garters for me"! I think it was my first introduction to classical music. I always found it very relaxing and MAGICAL

When I heard this video however, within the first 2 minutes I knew at last I had finally found someone that could play it. I know others here also understand how this music was meant to be heard. Isnt that a special thing. That we 'know' how it should sound! Like a firework going off in our hearts and mind we recognise it instantly. Surely this indicates that something special and profound exists in heartfelt beautiful movement. Whether movement of sound, body, light or nature. There must be a deep reason we are attracted to beauty and movement portrayed beautifully. I believe that is because it is holy. What holy means I cannot fully explain. But I do know this much. When I am in its presence it's like I'm home. And my only memory of that home is contained in the moment itself. Much luv.
Poor Beethoven... If only we can resurrect him an give him state of the art hearing aids. I would to see the joy it brings him.

Happy birthday to you is much better
Words can't explain the way Daniel Barenboim plays. All of his performances leave me and many others speechless. As a player of Beethoven, I think this performance is a very good interpretation of the classical style and periodic characteristics which come with it. Excellent job D.B!
PERFECT FIRST MOVEMENT. PERFECT! Barenboim gets better with age, clearly, as does every pianist. Sonata quasi una Fantasia
No im sorry but he plays the first movement to loud and way to slow murray periahas is much better

skyler mccloud it’s his interpretation
This might be the most lovely version of Moonlight Sonata I've ever heard.
i totaly agree. this is the best piece ever!! :-)
I like Rubinstein's interpretation more than this one. This is perfect, though.
I agree... Barenboim's tempo is just perfect. I play this sonata but I just can't repeat the deepness and the expression that his tempo causes. He said once that he sees this first movement like a death march, a funeral march. That may help. Great version.
very interesting input.
Loveliest you mean
If it takes so much genius to just play it right, how much does it take to write it! This is a glimpse at what the human brain at its best can do. It makes you proud to belong to the specie! Eternally live Beethoven! Long Live Barenboim!
I find the process of learning a piano piece so interesting. It is like learning a language; once you've studied, understood, dissected, and memorized the notes, they become part of your musical vocabulary.
Music is the highest and purest form of communication, transcending beyond the point spoken words fail....
this might be the best playing of the greatest composition that humanity has ever achieved
Honestly zee best version I have seen
I cried this is the most beautiful performance I ever heard and I’ve heard many versions to this song
Beethoven led the music, beyond the music, to transform it in a universal language, that overcomes the barriers of the time and space

this is the best by far interpretation of this piece I have ever heard. it is slow and sensual and soulful.. most people play a faster tempo but barenboim nails it
Magnífico Maestro Daniel Barenboim .
Simply beautiful. The pauses just heighten the romanticism of the piece. Barenboim hits it out of the park.
I always liked my father to play this for me (the first movement) when I was very young. Though I would say "play moon knights and garters for me"! I think it was my first introduction to classical music. I always found it very relaxing and MAGICAL
I believe he truly understands the Beethoven's Sonata's and his interpretation of this music is fantastic
Listening to Daniel Barenboim play this piece which is so familiar to me (and the world over) is like hearing it for the first time. Truly wonderful.
