  • WAPE 690 Jacksonville - Greaseman Debut / Audition w Dr John Weston - August 1975 - Radio Aircheck
Doug Tract, better known as The Greaseman. He is truly a one of a kind radio personality. In an era of 3, 4, & 5 person morning shows, Grease would make radio comedy gold, all by himself. The Greaseman pseudonym originated while he was in college. Grease has said in an interiview, “In those days of top 40, everybody who was on the radio was ‘cookin’; cookin’ with the Temptations, cookin’ Four Tops, that kind of thing. Which meant they were really rockin’. One day I said I was cookin’ with heavy grease. It was my way of saying I was out-cookin’ the other guys. I said it enough times, so one day one of the other deejays referred to me as the Greaseman.”
Dougie T was his on air name, but when he became the Greaseman, a different personality appeared. His voice deepened, and he projected the image of a middle-aged tattooed big bellied truck driver, with a swaggering bravado. Over the years, Grease developed many characters, and calls from listeners would often lead to a story of a recurring character from his repertoire, and thanks to Greaseman’s own special language that he invented, & listeners understood, no topic was taboo.
He spent time on air at WAXC Rochester, WRC Washington & WAPE Jacksonville, but Grease is probably best known for his time on WWDC DC101 in Washington, in the 1980s & 90s, when he was a major force on the radio in the nation’s capital.
This aircheck features Grease & his on air "audition" to land his gig at WAPE Jacksonville.

Back in the spring of 1982, 4 of us drove down to Florida for a “radio vacation” and got to hear The Greaseman on WAPE both on the way down and on the way up. Unfortunately, by 1982, the “Big Ape” was doing a country format, so we didn’t get to hear Grease talk up Top 40 records. But he was still a thrill nonetheless!

Back in the '70s growing up, I'd listen to The Greaseman. I had this vision of him as a large sweaty man. He told a story once about taking a bath and bottling the used bath water as a Men's Cologne. I was surprised years later when I saw what he really looked like.

Wow, how many stories are in this aircheck? The morning guy who "went into show business" was Jay Thomas, who was both a radio talent (NY and LA) and an actor. The real "Mr. Kampelberger" (not the voice on this clip) was Stan Kaplan, who owned the Ape and Big WAYS in Charlotte. This version of The Grease sounds like the several 'checks I have from his time at WRC, but at this point he was trying to get out of Hartford. Two minor spelling corrections: Dr. John Winston was the middayer at WAPE who handled mornings while they were waiting for The Greaseman, and Doug's last name is Tracht. Thanks for posting this, it fills a hole in my collection!
