    I remember those tractors well sitting on our local dealers lot I was just a young boy at the time, had hoped dad and grandpa would buy one but with the farm crisis in the 80’s we farm survived by not purchasing, but still another great classic IH 👍👍👍👍👍

    My dad had a 5088 that we used for over 20 years until it caught fire while my dad was picking cob corn several years ago and burned up. Fortunately, my dad was able to get out of the cab unharmed before it consumed the cab. The fire extinguisher wasn’t enough to stop the fire. That was the first tractor we ever had catch fire and burn up completely.

    Here in Europe the International 1455 is known as one of the best tractors of all time. It was a tractor built in Cologne only for the european market, so I think many Americans don't even know it existed. But so most europeans don't know about the american international models :D And actually there are a lot other internatonal models still running in europe, but all of them were built only for this market and not sold in the US

    I’ve never seen an IH 5488 tractor so this is cool to see. I saw the video that you had earlier this week about the IH 3588 and you was saying something in the comments about a Wheatland version. I didn’t know there was one of those made. I always was fascinated by the 2+2 International Harvester tractors and also the Steiger made 4wds and the 4300s made in the 1960s. The Magnums are a good one that I like of IH and CaseIH.

    International Harvester's main cause of its demise was the hiring of the company president Archie McCardell from Xerox. Record profits in 1979 turned into hundreds of millions in loses in two years and a 172 day UAW strike. McCardell, the 172 day strike, and a recession proved to be end of IH.

    • @bigtractorpower
      @bigtractorpower  Před 3 lety +1

      He was the first CEO in the United States to be paid $1 million a year. Today that is not much but it was a big deal back then. Interest rates, low grain prices and bad management decisions excelerated the end of IH. Decades of decisions less the company to the point of no return.

    • @Lauterbach24
      @Lauterbach24 Před 3 lety

      @@bigtractorpower I agree bad decisions and the economy at that moment cost the company, but from everything I have read from the mid level managers, union reps, and front line employees, McCardell was just an awful CEO. He took IH from the 2nd most valuable company in the United States to a company that couldn't even muster $2 on the stock exchange in less than 5 years. 6,400 employees lost their jobs, and IH company was lost forever to Case. He was fired the day after the strike ended, and no concessions on mandatory overtime were accepted by the union. Just a stupid move on his part to force a strike in those economic conditions.
