Mass Shootings: An Unpopular Opinion

  • The national conversation about mass shootings in the wake of the El Paso and Dayton tragedies is important, but it’s also important to consider some things that are uncomfortable to think about. So here is my unpopular opinion about them.

My name is Brandon Herrera. I'm the owner and operator of The AK Guy Inc, a 07 Firearm Manufacturer based out of Fayetteville, NC. I also co-own Stark Media Group, and designed the rifle known as the AK-50.
I've started to dedicate this CZcams channel above all to have fun, but also as a way to document my entrepreneurial journey for the next few years as I try to grow my companies. Hopefully, people can learn from my example, successes, and failures.

Fully expecting to lose subscribers over this one. It was an uncomfortable video for me to film, but it sounds from the comments like it’s giving a few of you something to think about, so that’s a success in my mind.
One thing I would like to point out: Saying mass shootings happen more than other methods like bombings, car attacks, etc is a logical fallacy. To use that as an argument has an unstated assumption: That if those shooters didn’t have guns, then the attacks wouldn’t have happened and they would’ve lived without acting on those feelings. That does not appear to be true. Not at all.

@@friedhelmwinter1237 as a liberal, there's a great quote from Corey Taylor's book "America 51", relating the idea "when everyone is unique, no one is unique" to "when everything is offensive, nothing is". A central theme of the book comes down to the idea that, we as Americans, no longer talk but yell opinions into the void believing/ not seeing each other to not be human, almost a reverse straw man fallacy. But I recognize i don't know that much about guns (outside fps shooters), and I'm trying to learn. I don't want guns to be illegal. I just want more registration and to try to curb some of the violence (not letting spousal abusers buy them, or anyone with violent convictions or extreme mental illnesses (not all mental illnesses, that's just gonna blanket ban every human)). Anyway, my point is, while I'm not going to agree that gun rights for everyone should still be a right, I'd like to have a conversation, a real, civil dialogue about the shit that's tearing our nation apart. If a person wants to kill massive amounts of people, its not hard to do. With our without firearms. He even listed some. You know what good a firearm can do in this situation? Man brings rifle to concert (as an example). Someone sees him raise the rifle, and they draw a pistol and can make a citizens arrest. Why don't we see this happen? Brandon. I'm late to view this, but I want to thank you. Being a memelord shitposter is a personality. Running a business and honing a craft is a passion. But offering an honest and heartfelt opinion on such an inflamed and as stated tragically misread situation takes courage.
You will never lose people by being honest. Whomever disagrees will hopefully do so on principle, and even then one would hope they would have faith enough in their convictions to not only engage you in debate, but to accept your perspective as your own and valid.
We live in an age of hyperbole and echo Chambers. And as much as you hit in on the head with masculinity needing some maintenance and care, the human condition needs it more; we need to fight. We need to have these arguements. Letting things fester and allowing the most irrational or loudest voices rule the stage is only teeing up for another 20th century period of suffering and loss.
Keep your conscience. Stay honest. And listen to the world. You're in a position where you can help push us toward that balance between stagnation and chaos.
And I honestly believe we need that now more than ever.

Here's the thing. We don't even successfully uphold the laws that exist around guns.
A ban won't change that ability to actively and successfully uphold future bans with our current force and methods. Ideally, we would be able to model other countries with less gun violence and uphold any laws we have. But we don't have that infrastructure and it's only become more obvious in the two years since I left my comment.
The truth of the matter is that in many cases, bombs WERE the more-casualty threat even though they are illegal and were illegal when made.

It's true that with enough determination most people could build a gun or a weopon to get the job done but the fact of the matter is most people don't have the will. The argument shouldn't be that banning guns doesn't reduce gun related homicide. The argument should be that only a fool would trust the government with a complete monopoly on violence. To be honest, gun control would possibly help as well. There are a lot of male suicides, which are often done with guns. There are states like Missouri where access to guns are less restricted than say maybe the state of Connecticut.
By the way, I'm using the current book I'm reading as the source I used to claim that, which would be Dying of Whiteness by Johnathan Metzl.
I know the book does sound a bit biased due to the author's language, but he does acknowledge how guns are part of American culture in a way, at least in certain regions. Like many cultures have dangerous traditions, it's best to not have everyone gain access to a potentially harmful weapon.
As for the video, I think he has a good point yet at the same time, I also thing this whole gun issue dives into deeper issues, which he fails to mention. I also think he could have done more research or provided sources? I'm not any good either, I mean I provided one book. If anything, I might have to repeat the video because I wrote the comment while typing this comment.
Also, besides just controlling guns, they should make it more accessible to have healthcare, especially with mental health too so young men can get out of the darkness they are stuck in.

It's a nice thought, but controlling guns only hurts the law abiding.
Criminals will always find another way. Look at the knife crime in the UK. They're running a "save a life, turn in your knife" campaign and trying to outlaw knives with sharp points... Something anyone with a piece of concrete and 10 minutes of free time can make out of any rounded tip knife.
      The same goes for suicides.
Guns are convenient. One pull of the trigger and there go your brains well over the wall... But they're not the only way to kill yourself.
There's knives, glass, sharp stones, poison, drugs, rope... I can go on.
Those who have reached the point where they truly want to kill themselves are going to find a way to do it, guns or not.
Banning (or further "restricting") guns only makes the law abiding less safe. It is counter productive to the overall well being of the nation.

I find it extremely comical that people are demanding for guns to be more regulated when we are ready knew that this person was a threat to public safety.
What we have in the United States as a culture issue. Stemming from broken families, mental health issues, and people that don’t know how to deal with the stresses of life. Unfortunately these exact same issues have been occurring since the beginning of time. All we can do is try to identify the pre-event indicators and make sure that we are ready if it ever happens to us.

NONE of these anti gun people seem to have a sense of self defense or think of themselves as the one defending others. They want police to do it for them but they don’t understand that POLICE TAKE TIME to get to you so. 100% of the time if you’re in a life or death situation the only person you can rely on is yourself.
Personally I never understood why people what to take away guns. People like me in rural areas HAVE TO BE self reliant because the cops take 45 min to an hour to get to you. But people in urban areas do not think of us because they think we’re all just a bunch of backwoods dumbasses (I have a college education) . It would be too easy to do. Put the fuel tank in their backpack and tuck the nozzle into their jacket. Walk into a classroom and spray burning fuel on their peers, and burn the whole school down in the process. People who want to kill will kill no matter what. Limitation breeds creativity.

I've lost many loved ones and can relate to the anguish of the ones who have lost people in these horrific events. You are correct in many things you stated here, a father's role being important, 'mass killings' are the issue not 'mass shootings', these individuals are distributed and will find a way to achieve their ends. This is a very hard topic to comment on, let alone publicly, and an even harder topic to try to find answers to, especially in a world that overly politicizes everything. Open and honest discussion is the first step, and I commend you for trying to open that dialog a little further. From myself and many in our community, thank you.

You can definitely do something that causes more death but it also requires more time and effort. The majority of the mass killings are with guns because it’s something a person can do on the drop of a dime and romanticize it in their heads knowing they also have the tool to end their own lives on the spot as well. The fact is guns allow quicker killings with less work and that’s good enough for a lot of people. Bringing up Japan is actually a great example, they have a HIGH suicidal rate unfortunately but you don’t see anywhere near the amount of mass killings because they don’t have guns… if they had guns as easily as we do mixed with the amount of people wanting to end it all we would see a LOT more mass killings (thank god we don’t)

“Weapons compound man's power to achieve; they amplify the capabilities of both the good man and the bad, and to exactly the same degree, having no will of their own. Thus we must regard them as servants, not masters - and good servants to good men. Without them, man is diminished, and his opportunities to fulfill his destiny are lessened. blueovalfan23 I’m going to disagree on a key point. That is motive. The Nazis did great evil while convinced they were doing right. Many of these mass murderers today are in it for notoriety because of just how evil they know their deeds are. If you look at their journals and such you’ll see statements along the lines of “now, I’ll make them all notice me” or “I’m going to hurt them as I’ve been hurt.” That’s the typical manifesto of the lone gunman societal reject type. Conversely, there are also political and religious motivated terrorists. These groups do share that common ground with the Nazis in believing their purpose is just. These are 2 very distinct types of groups who will respond to opposition very different. The terrorist will not stop until they are killed for their cause. The societal reject will usually stop shooting and commit suicide at the first sign of opposition. The societal reject will commit suicide by police. The terrorist will often use tactics to kill as many police officers as possible or may even allow themselves to be captured in the case of the political terrorist in order to write books and attempt to spread their political manifest as far as possible. These are very different types of murderers, and as a sheepdog, it is important to recognize the difference and know which tactics to use to stop each. Jihadist terrorists as we see in Iraq and Afghanistan will often use complex attacks where they may combine IEDs and small arms fire. One will initiate the attack in an attempt to drive or trap people inside a kill zone. The political or religious terrorist is often much more trained, organized, and tactically efficient than the lone gunman. Motive makes a difference in the overall psychology and influences their entire decision making process.

You forgot the guy who killed 33 people and injured dozens more setting an animation studio on fire in Japan. He had a grudge against anime, took gasoline to the studio and killed 33 people. That's worse than the vast majority of our "mass shootings" with something everyone has access to on every street corner.
People love to blame the scapegoat, whether it be guns, video games, movies/TV, etc, but until people start looking at the actual causes, take a look at what has happened to society over the last 30 years or so to make these things more common, and actually pay attention to people who are obviously sick nothing will change.

      35. Two people died in the hospital. These arson attacks are very typical in China as well and several times the body counts exceeds most mass shootings. Even with a state run media that tries its hardest not to publicize the murderers (no pictures, last name only, motives are obscured as "revenge against society").

@Otium Borealis In an enclosed area where the victims cannot escape, chemical weapons could potentially have very lethal effects. And even if they don't kill that many people, the disruption, panic fear, and massive number of injuries that a chemical attack could cause may make them appealing to terrorists. Thankfully, most people who decide to commit acts of terrorism and mass murder are not particularly intelligent or creative.
Those with the knowhow to manufacture and deploy chemical weapons generally have no interest in using them for terroristic purposes. Those with an inclination toward mass murder of innocent people generally lack the know-how to develop more creative means to do so.

it's so funny how Brandon and I can come from totally different political backgrounds but pretty much agree almost identically on gun laws. I think it has alot to do with being logically driven and brave enough to say something that challenges everyone around them and support it through the yelling and screaming from either extreme that you can't be a medium.

I think if people really started paying attention they'd see that the gun control debate isn't, at its core, left vs right. Maybe my experience is skewed because I live in Texas and know a lot of full on socialists (if you get your news from primarily hyper conservative media imma ask you to look the word "socialist" up because it does NOT mean what they keep saying it means) that own guns and go to the range more weekends than not. Like every other important and hard to solve issue politicians have chosen a the side they think their constituency want them to and then engage in brainless banner waving for their side for the sake of votes and donations. Its all a fucking play to them.
And if anyone reading this is defaulting to "the fuckin libs just want you dependant on the government!" You have swallowed their bullshit and the plate they served it to you on.
And if anyone reading this is defaulting to "republicans are just mouthbreathing psychopaths who don't care about innocent lives as long as they have their ARs with 100 round mags" that goes for you too, mother fucker.
We're all being manipulated by the ultra-rich for a fucking popularity contest so they can keep pulling in donors and getting richer while they have us all at eachother's throats over shit they never cared about to start with, and these stupid assholes on every side are falling for it over and over and over again.

    • @Turalcar
      @Turalcar Před 3 lety

Bravery, logic and numbers are not enough.
If you know that people will be triggered but care more about "being correct" (which kinda goes for Brandon's "thank God it's guns" as well) than convincing as many people as possible and, better yet, getting your solution to a problem across you might want to reconsider your priorities.
My extreme position is "Under no pretext should arms and ammunition be surrendered; any attempt to disarm the workers must be frustrated, by force if necessary."
(Marx said it 170 years ago, before automatic weapons but also mentions cannons in the same paragraph.)
