A string of high-profile mass shootings over the past few years has spawned a movement to outlaw so-called assault weapons, in particular the popular AR-15.
On January 9, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) introduced a federal bill to ban assault weapons-legislation that's been depicted as life-saving, common sense policy. But its definition of an assault weapon is totally arbitrary.
Proposals like Feinstein's latest draft bill leave shooters with plenty of equally deadly alternatives.
"An assault weapon is whatever is covered by an assault weapon ban," says Reason Senior Editor Jacob Sullum, author of a feature story on the topic in our June 2018 issue. "The criteria that are used to identify assault weapons are things that have little or nothing to do with how useful or how deadly an assault weapon is in the hands of a mass murderer."
The federal government banned assault weapons in 1994, when President Bill Clinton signed a bill also sponsored by Sen. Feinstein. That legislation expired 10 years later. Meanwhile, seven states and the District of Columbia have enacted their own assault weapon bans.
There's little evidence that the 1994 legislation reduced gun deaths, in part because it was mostly a symbolic gesture.
"Unless you really delve into the specifics of what these bills do, you don't understand how utterly arbitrary they are," says Sullum.

@TME3 it's a jeep, so yes
@TME3 which shooter killed 100 people in 2 minutes? Or even close? That's a pretty short amount of time, just like saying I took a day trip in my Jeep from NY to CA.
@TME3 if you want to be taken seriously, get your facts right. 40,000 deaths a year (6/10 are suicide according to pewresearch.org), not 60,000, and to kill 100 in 2 minutes is pretty impossible (Las Vegas shooting- 59 dead in about 10 minutes). And I agree, there are idiots who dont care, and others wh are ignoring it, but a good 90% of us do care. We dont live in areas of cities like L.A., Chicago, and NY, and have dysfunctional households. What I'd like to see is a basic gun safety questionnaire and a suicide prevention pop-up sort of thing when purchasing a firearm from licensed dealers, and more support to crime ridden areas. That's where the violence is. Deal with criminals, not the hundreds of millions of law abiding citizens like you and me. This wont fix all the problems, maybe not even 30%, but it is a better way of going about it than grouping more people into criminals because now they own an unregistered, or banned firearm. Also, banning types of guns or all guns, or guns from certain areas obviously don't help anyone (i.e. sandy hook, Las vegas, Columbine, Virginia tech).
TME3 Have you ever tried having an actual discussion with a “gun loving nut-job”, or do you just spout off and lecture from your sheltered bubble as if YOU know what’s best for everyone? Why would you want to take away my ability (I’m a petite woman) to defend myself against a rapist? Do you honestly think there’s anything else I could use effectively in that situation? There’s also the fact that where I live in Texas has a HUGE problem with wild hogs. Those fuckers will gore you instead of run if you surprise them. They come right into my yard, one time there was 15 or so! If there were no guns, many states would be fucked on that alone. But I suppose we should just forget about all of that, not to mention the number of lives saved with defensive gun usage every year, because TME3 just KNOWS the only solution to a basically non issue is no guns. Right.
@TME3 READ MY COMMENTS.
#1- I never down played suicides, never did I say ONLY 40,000 deaths. I even suggested safety questions and a suicide prevention pop-up/flyer (something) that would in a way help people. It's 6/10 gun related deaths, DEFINITELY something that can be lowered. It's that that 40,000 is usually taken as if they were all crime related, like as if the other hundreds of millions of gun owners are criminal wanna be's. If you want to be taken seriously, Get. Your. Facts. Right.
#2- Rambo is from hollywood. Hollywood does not like to use real world physics. 30 round mag? I'll just shoot 100 rounds without reloading. If you learn about guns, you'll start to see all the problems Hollywood makes. These mass shootings? No machine guns. (If you want to argue bumpstocks, again, Las Vegas- 10 minutes, 59 people) Full auto has been illegal for regular citizens like you and me since the 1930s. You'd have to be a licensed dealer, lots of paperwork, and at least $20k to spend on one. No mass shooter has been a licensed dealer.
#3- rights and freedom arguments, the "because we have the right" arguments are stupid. We should ask ourselves, why do we still have it? What good, if any, could it possibly do? What are the down falls? Tyrannical governments are a thing. Say a president really didn't like a group of people. Maybe this president put a type of ban on a certain group of people, violating the constitution, and wasn't stopped? *cough* cough* New Black Panthers *cough* Yes, the Gov has nuclear weapons, but why would they attack themselves? The whole point of the cold war was NOT to start nuclear warfare, then they'd use it on themselves?
We have it as a deterrent now. The only way the US Gov won't go psycho is because they know we have guns.
#4- if you got your facts right, we'd take you seriously. How are we suppose to learn from you when you can't provide accurate data? Actual numbers? I keep correcting you, but you won't listen. You only want to assume what I'm gonna say, and what you WANT to hear.
I ain't saying you need to like guns, or even give them a chance, but you gotta stop looking down the barrel of your own lies and misconsemptions.

For any politician out there:
1) what I class as an assault rifle is a select fire rifle with an intermediate cartridge (e.g. 5.56 or 7.62x39) that feeds from a detachable magazine not a ‘clip’
2) the difference between semi auto and full auto is semi auto fires only 1 round and self loads a fresh one at the press of a trigger whilst full auto automatically fires rounds when the trigger is held down until the mag is empty or the operator lets go of the trigger. ‘Fully semi auto’ is like saying ‘I’ve got a fully half circle’ it’s either semi automatic or fully automatic

@Bryce yeah but the remington guy could be taking shots 400 yards away and be significantly harder to find than a boogaloo boy running with an AR

@Bryce I'd rather get shot by a .223 from the AR 15 than the .338 Lapua Magnum from an L115A3 at close range.
Did I hear him say full semi automatic?
Yes. Yes you did.
Yes, to distinguish it from semi semi automatic or partial semiautomatic

My grandmother had a .357 magnum. She lived to be 98 years old. Never shot anyone, because everyone knew she had a .357 magnum. Get it now?
So if one of the qualifications for being considered an assault rifle is a pistol grip, does that mean pistols get labeled as assault rifles too? What about a shotgun with a pistol grip? Do those count too?
Just remember these people think the “AR” in “AR-15” stands for assault rifle and not armalite rifle.
AR17. Armalites naming scheme was weird.

Like Jefferson said, "If a law is unjust, man is not only right to disobey, he is obligated to do so."
@Hans
The Constitution? Lol just a guess.
Anything that removes or restricts a person's liberty is unconstitutional.
@Hans the piece of paper. Anyone with a half a brain knew the intent of our founding fathers. The constitution was design to limit state power, not give it. The state does not have the authority to restrict the use of arms. God wrote the constitution himself, these are natural rights
@Hans I will reject any unconstitutional act against my natural rights. Taking ones arms without due process is unlawful. I do NOT have to obey unlawful acts.
Please don't say HIGH capacity magazines, they are STANDARD mags , until you get in to 60+ round magazines/drums...
My guess is they are trying to change the nomenclature so that 10 rounds becomes the standard. If you looked at it from an end-game standpoint (assuming a bill had passed reducing the largest size to ten rounds), you wouldn't want people calling the 10 rounders low capacity and 30 rounders standard because people would vote to have the law reversed. I think it is intentional,; not caused by ignorance.
isn't anything over 30 considered high capacity?
Boys boys, at least we can have our 10 round barretts 😂
@Lance Clemings Let's be honest here, if you NEED more than ONE bullet to kill that deer, you should NOT be shooting at it in the first place.
@Lance Clemings Same deal... deer, target, whatever. one shot one kill. Do you honestly think you're going to actually be accurate with anything beyond the 2nd round when trying to empty a 30 round mag as fast as you can?
There is a reason why "spray and pray" is an actual term.
So I guess my Ruger 1022 with the deadly buildup stock would be considered an assault weapon , but not my Remington SEMI AUTOMATIC .308 .
In all fairness, if they're gonna pass a ban anyway, I'm happy they're only banning cosmetic things. Hell, put a straight stock on an AR and now their laws are powerless. If they ban semi-automatics in general, which is the alternative, and that's worse
These people don’t understand what a gun is. To quote angry cops, “It is a tool”. The gun doesn’t do anything until YOU give it purpose. The same concept applies to cars, medicine, or a hammer.
