And then a few times there it seemed like he was trying to force him to say something or concede to something that he just wasnt going to. Gore Vidal was the greatest essayist this country has ever produced....and his keen mind is sorely missed
He's one of the American greats for sure, but I'd still give it to Edmund Wilson and Joan Didion.
