  • How to prepare glass canning jars for the canning process. Sterilizing canning jars is the first step to successful canning. I really do enjoy going shopping for canning jars. Over the past several years there are a lot more choices. Canning jars now come in all shape and sized. This video will show you how to sterilize you jars for most any canning process.

    1. Put the newly washed bottles into a big pot.
    2. Pour water into the pot making sure that the bottles are fully submerged.
    3.cover the put then boil it for 10-15 minutes
    4. remove from the pot and let it air dry.

      Is there any way to sterilize without boiling? I bought jars but they're apparently too tall to submerge in my pot, I have food going bad in my fridge so I don't have time to waste and I don't want to buy a bigger pot that I might never use again. I don't think my jars are heat resistant anyway.

    Couple of comments hopefully taken as constructive criticism towards better canning videos: 1. put some water in the jars prior to placing in pot, so they don't tip and break. 2. No need to dump the soap water before lids and rings are washed, they can be washed using the same soap & water that was used for the jars. 3) Per the USDA the boiling time is: 10 mns. + 1 mn per additional 1000 ft. above sea level.

    I always pack my sterilized jars with quartered cucumbers and put garlic and onion down in the jar first, then using a canning funnel I add my brine mixture to one half to three quarters from the top of the jar, then wipe the top of the jar with a clean paper towel and screw the band on while holding the seal with my finger.

    Those lids can be reused and they reseal just fine, just keep an eye on the rubber ring , if it starts to break down then it stops sealing the jars and needs to be replaced at that point

    • @philipyau2664
      @philipyau2664 Před 7 lety +9

      I wouldn't recommend reusing the lids as the rubber seal has already been compressed and moulded to the first jar it was used with. Any subsequent use would not result in as good a seal. Lids are cheap enough so why take the risk?

    The procedure in this video will only sanitize the jars. The jars are not sterilized. Boiling (212 degrees) the jars kills the active bacteria but does not kill the dormant bacteria and after 24 hours the bacteria will grow. To sterilize the jars you need to keep them from being exposed to new contaminants and boil them every 24 hours for 72 hours. This will kill the bacteria as it becomes active. Or you could use a pressure cooker to heat the jars to a higher temperature (250 degrees) which will kill the active and dormant bacteria at the same time .

      @@MarjoriesCandies I saw a video from a woman who does canning using newer scientific results for sealing. She was saying that the heat you'd expose the lid to in hot water is far less than the heat it gets during canning and the hotter temp will make a better contact to the glass. I tried it and god very good results and tight seals. Wash them if you feel they need to be cleaned by all means. I like it because it saves a step or two.

    Proverbs 31: 10-31. The Virtues of a Noble Woman
    10A wifeb of noble character, who can find?
    She is far more precious than rubies.
    11The heart of her husband trusts in her,
    and he lacks nothing of value.
    12She brings him good and not harm
    all the days of her life.
    13She selects wool and flax
    and works with eager hands.
    14She is like the merchant ships,
    bringing her food from afar.
    15She rises while it is still night
    to provide food for her household
    and portions for her maidservants.
    16She appraises a field and buys it;
    from her earnings she plants a vineyard.
    17She girds herselfc with strength
    and shows that her arms are strong.
    18She sees that her gain is good,
    and her lamp is not extinguished at night.
    19She stretches out her hands to the distaff
    and grasps the spindle with her fingers.
    20She opens her arms to the poor
    and reaches out her hands to the needy.
    21When it snows, she has no fear for her household,
    for they are all clothed in scarlet.d
    22She makes coverings for her bed;
    her clothing is fine linen and purple.
    23Her husband is known at the city gate,
    where he sits among the elders of the land.
    24She makes linen garments and sells them;
    she delivers sashes to the merchants.
    25Strength and honor are her clothing,
    and she can laugh at the days to come.
    26She opens her mouth with wisdom,
    and faithful instruction is on her tongue.
    27She watches over the affairs of her household
    and does not eat the bread of idleness.
    28Her children rise up and call her blessed;
    her husband praises her as well:
    29“Many daughters have done noble things,
    but you surpass them all!”
    30Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting,
    but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.
    31Give her the fruit of her hands,
    and let her works praise her at the gates.
