Great to see Pettibon covered here. This kind of art was my route into comics rather than the other way around so I’m always happy to see what would be considered a more outsider style covered.

In one week we got Dan Clowes, Alex Toth, JRR, and Raymond Pettibon: I love Cartoonist Kayfabe. Thanks for keeping me excited about comics and inspired to put pen (or whatever) to paper (or wherever).

I just saw some Pettibon pieces at the MoMA in NYC in August. I was surprised to see it was framed original inks, and not photocopies wheat-pasted to the walls. Haha. It's cool to see he has crossed into the "Fine Art" world. Great episode guys! Thanks for sharing!

Original pieces of his can go for upwards of $20k. I've never seen one for under $6500

At UCLA art school 2000 I met a punk friend who stole that big book in the middle by taking it to the art store restroom, chucking it out of a window, and walking out to pick up his Raymond Pettibon book. This guy also introduced me to LA’s still going all ages DIY artsy music venue The Smell.

The love and rockets reference piece you were looking for is the art on the back of the Nervous Breakdown album, that book only had the art on the front cover. Loving both black flag and comics, this episode feels tailor made for me

One artist from the punk scene that has been sadly underappreciated is Shawn Kerri: she did some of the most iconic flyer art of the era, designed the mascots for Circle Jerks & The Germs, and was ridiculously prolific for about ten years drawing CARtoons, undergrounds (Commies from Mars, Cocaine Comix, etc), Cracked, and dirty cartoons for Hustler, Chic, and other porno magazines. Her draftsmanship and layouts are impeccable, and though it's her own unmistakable style, there's clearly a lot of Jack Davis and Wally Wood influence in the mix.
Almost nobody had heard from her for a while, she wasn't still working by the mid 90s, and as she was well-known to have some serious hard drug problems, it was widely assumed that she had overdosed and died--I read a lot of sources online that claimed this back in the early 2000s. Some blogger did some extensive digging and found out that she had sustained a serious head injury in a bicycle accident at some point, and due to severe cognitive problems had been living at home with her mother for the last several decades (not sure if she's still alive now, though she was as recently as 2017).
Obviously, I'd love to see a Cartoonist Kayfabe episode on her stuff! I dunno if you guys read comments from earlier posts, but if you see this, do a Google image search for her art.

  • @gongorelocksmagiincommand

This is one of those kind of comments but Ray for a short time played bass in Black Flag early on.

I'm the same age as the Kayfabe guys and their comments on their college art school experience always make me scream hallelujah. The professors really sneered at you for being influenced by comics. I knew some students that even hid that fact from the instructors.

art school must suck. i went throught architecture school and it was all drawing all the time. we did 6 years of life drawings 8 hours a week. the only thing we did not get to do was artist autopsy drawings like the original beaux arts in paris. but for the people who wanted to there was a path but you had to drive 2 hours to the capitol and draw with the med students. i am still kicking myself for not doing it. Oh and homework was a full sketchbook turned in at the end of semester ,

cool video guys. I was familiar with Pettibon's work on Sonic Youth and Black Flag album covers. I think the line-up art which inspired Jaime Hernandez was on the back cover of the Black Flag Nervous Breakdown EP on SST. I wonder how much of that is controlled because SST was run and owned by his brother Greg Ginn. Great work. The late 80s and early 90s had many music zines like the Big Takeover with work from independent artists. I wish I still had some of those.

Love Pettibone! Excellent choice. KAYFABE HAS RANGE! -and that's what makes it great. About that $800k drawing. If it was one of his wave drawings then it was likely HUGE. Drawing? You could rightly call it that, though it would likely have been a very large, painting sized drawing.
