February 22nd 1942 was the final day of civilian auto production before it was time to convert to war manufacturing! Always been fascinated by the '42 models and THIS one is gorgeous!! Thanks for sharing Lou!

Lou, my Brother Johnny bought a 48 Roadmaster model 71 Dynaflow in 1960 for $40.00 out of a junkyard and drove it home which was over 100 miles. He still drives it today on occasion. His son really drives it. I was in Florida and overhauled the engine with him in 2018. I was 7 years old when he bought it. In November 1975 I bought a 48 Roadmaster model 76S 3 Sp as well out of a junkyard. I sold it in 2013. I asked my Dad if he wanted to drive it when it was road worthy in 78. Dad said, just take me for a ride. My Dad loved it. It reminded him of the 42 being a 3 Sd. Dad passed away 5 months later. I just kept the car in his memory, then I realized that I could let the car go because I didn’t use it much after that. But my memories of my Dad and the 42 will never be erased. Lou thank you for refreshing my memories. HAPPY HOLIDAYS

WOW! Very Beautiful! My Dad had 42 Roadmaster, Model 71 Sedan when I was very small back in 56. It was a dark metallic green, the family Nick named it “THE GREEN HORNET”. It had unbelievable power even when it was loaded down. My older Johnny would tell me stories about that 42. Dad used the Buick like it was a pickup. He took the back seat cushion out, and filled that space with 50 LB bags of potatoes. My two older brothers were in the front with Dad, I was in the back laying down on the potatoes with another two older brothers and our German Shepherd Dutchess. We were on route 9W in NY climbing a 7% grade. A family friend was in his 48 Dodge and could stay with us. His car had only two people in it. That Straight Eight was a monster!

Wow Lou! You're finding some really top American iron lately! Recently I've focused on that particular Buick and here you're featuring it! I love the '42 with the thin grille "teeth" and border and those chrome speed lines. Art, pure art on wheels. The resto and color combo are fabulous. A poster child for the beauty that once was the American automobile.

What a beautiful rare car. It is a 1942 but it’s so ahead of it’s time, it shows early 1950’s flow designs.

Hi, Lou! You've shown us so many examples of old cars the spectators rarely get to see, and this is yet another wonderful treat. Buicks for many years in the middle of the century were known for those bow-shaped grilles with the vertical teeth and this was the first of those. To answer your question about how long the '42s remained in production, I know that all the manufacturers had ceased production by February 10, 1942, and of course by then a lot of them were built with "blackout" trim in place of chrome.
Keep those great surprises coming! I'll C Ya!

Holy cow! What a rare and absolutely stunning automobile. Lou,, this is your best yet. There are so many interesting design details that it would be impossible to list them all. The way the convertible top is made and the detail on the back rib and around the window is a beautiful one of a kind design element. And of course, the knobs are ivory?? It is hard to remember but in 1942 rubber was being used to support the building of war materials so getting a new tire was next to impossible, steel was being donated by the public to support the building of war-related supplies and equipment. I could go on and on but I'm sure most folks familiar with the history of WW2 will remember these facts.
Just beautiful piece of history, thank you so much for finding this. Talk about your needle in the haystack. I've already replayed this and will probably do so again and again and still see something that I had missed.

Beautiful car. Lou, I've been into Buicks for more years than I want to admit to and this is the closest I've come to a 1942. I'm surprised to see that Buick hadn't come up with the bombsight hood ornament yet. From what I was told Buick manufactured transmissions for GM during this time period so that may account for the smoothness of the gear changes of this car. There also seems to be a synchromesh 1st gear here as he engaged low flawlessly while still moving.
Great car and great show as always Lou and please keep 'em coming!

Even with the war just around the corner (the majority of 1942 cars were built in 1941) they spared no expense with chrome and stainless steel. The 1946-48 models has the same bodies but would have less exterior trim.
With this new redesign there was no need to restyle after the war. Buick ceased car production on Feb 10, 1942. Other makes already had ceased.
Buick built 2489 of these beauties and 509 of the awesome Roadmaster convertibles.

Straight eight like god intended. Way ahead of its time. Torque tube drive. The dual carbs. I would compare it to 4 8 4 steam engine, not a crummy diesel. Fast and powerful . I do like the 1946 better, same body, trim is just a bit more subdued , but has bomb site with no cross bars. Unfortunately no dual carbs. The later 42s had painted chrome, due to war, also pistols were cast iron, which lowered the HP from 1941. Wonderful auto remember when better automobiles are built Buick Will build them!

The only Buick rarer would be a 42 Roadmaster convertible but there are a few of them around. It's nice it has manual windows as the hydraulics could be troublesome. One thing I noticed was the insert in the antenna control knob is missing. There's a cap with an arrow in it so you know where the antenna is. You certainly got a lot of car for your money in those days. It would last forever if you took care of it. Later 42 models didn't have as much chrome on them. Before the war shut it all down, quite a few Buicks were made in '42. In 46 about the only change was two slots in the grille below the hood. That's how I tell 42 and 46 apart.

GM did Olds and Pontiac a huge justice by taking their names off the computer on wheels plastic garbage they build these days.
GM was at it's best when it's divisions competed against each other, rather than just slapping each other's name tags on the same car. The Cimmaron is an example. The 90's Pontiac (Daewoo built) LeMans was another. That Daewoo Lemans was the car that ended my respect for GM. How low could GM go? That low apparently. Why would they ever do that to Pontiac?
