  • All three hypercars at the wonderful Portimao circuit. Each of them from the respective factories. Lap times, sliding around, smiling and then a track-battle with the legends Tiff Needell and Marino Franchitti. The very best of days.

    6 years later. This proves to be one of the best independently produced CZcams automotive videos of all time. Thank you for your work along with Neil and the entire production crew at the time. You're the most deserving of anyone else to have gotten selected for Topgear post trio era. The community thrives on this content. Pure, uninfluenced motoring for the masses. Thank you, once again. My passion surely wouldn't be the same without it.

      Although the last race was pretty much scripted and I bet they knew pretty much after the they tried the cars what they liked best it was still awesome!
      And I really do think even if you tried them all as they did it's a hard choice and they were honest in the end. My take is that the 918 is probably the best track car, P1 is a track oriented hyper car, and the LaFerrari if your driving skills can handle it the most fun car...

      I completely agree. I don't think I realized how brilliant these three cars were when they came out, as a ten year old, but boy oh boy do I appreciate them now. We will never quite see a battle like this ever again. It was indeed the first of its kind. Funny how 2020 will bring the last battle of its kind, with Ferrari, Porsche, and McLaren set to debut their new hypercars in 2025. After that, everything will be electric. The battle between the AMG One and the Aston Martin Valkyrie is.. well, to put it simply, not exciting.

      Exactly. Not worried about tyres, mechanics, lap times because they know it works and won't disappoint. That's massive and makes the 918 the standout car for me although not with the old school decals. I bet you the P1 needed work done on it every time it came in, they are horrific for faults and problems. Does look crazy though!

      Exactly the reason that without even a second of thought I would buy the Porsche instead of the Ferrari or the McLaren... Porsche makes SOLID cars, even if it's not the most beautiful or the fastest, it's technically solid as every other Porsche is and would save a lot on frustration... you just know that when you get into it it will start and have fun without worrying it's going to break down.

    Now I'm still watching this, but my conclusion about the previous P1 918 battle that happened still stands. Mclaren sends out a huge team of people, has as a non road legal race setting (which is fine for this comparison) and has this super crazy tire. Ferrari sends out a crazy team of people and tells Chris how to drive it fast on this circuit. Meanwhile, from the video it looks like Porsche sent out maybe one guy and set it up on the same tire that can come on the new Focus RS and said "Fuck it, have at it". Porsche never fails to impress me.

    Its funny how Italians and British send armies of engineers, special tyres, taking tones of data then adjust the cars, they save weight in every possible way, no seat adjustment, no stereo, no glovebox, everything just to make them cars go 0.5sec faster and Porsche just sends a car that has all the luxuries, no engineers, no data, no special tyres, car weights almost as much as other two combined and still manages to go around the track as quickly as other two. Remarkable German engineering

    • @veneratedmortal4369

    • @MrDrBlahh
      @MrDrBlahh Před 3 lety +8

      Remember tho, the porsche has the Michelin tyres which are superior to the Pirelli tyre. So that makes a big difference, i think i like the P1 most...but that Porsche seems like itd be best for actual road use. Especially with the AWD it is probably easier to handle. Really is hard to pick a favorite.

    • @jankostojanovic1653
      @jankostojanovic1653 Před 3 lety +11

      Porsche actually had a big advantage because of the tyres .And reasons you mentioned have nothing to do with engineering of the cars .Porche also sends a team with a car ,take a look at the real top gear video .
      Ferrari is just like that ,they are lets call it overprotective about theyr cars , especially something that is special like the la ferrari.
      Theese are cars now worth more than a milion ,no factory will just send a car for someone to trash it on a track with no supervision .
      All three are amazing ,Porche definitely has a lot ot amazing tech ,they got a big budget with the VW behind them and they definitely do a great job .
      But i would just take the ferrari any day ,first because of that bloody italian design ,but definitely because of the way they built the Ferrari.
      Porche is almost an electric car ,so many fricking electronics ,so disappointed .Ferrari are the only one who still do it for the enthusiast ,nothing comes close to a ferrari v12 ,that's the real deal ,no turbos no bunch of electric engines .
      The amazing thing that the NA V12ferrar is still one of the quickest cars on the world ,that's amazing ,with no turbos or electric engines like on porsche ,just the old school naturally aspirated V12

    One odd thing I noticed was that the onboard footage of the fast lap in the 918 just "feels" subjectively slower and more sedate than the other two. In the LaFerrari and P1, there's an element of frantic fear and brutality to the footage, but the 918 lap footage conveys a much less dramatic experience through the camera.

    • @Team3xtreme
      @Team3xtreme Před 8 lety +66

      Because the P1 and LaFerrari are rear wheel drive cars which is a lot harder to tame at that kind of power and speed as opposed to the 918 which is 4wd which will be a lot more controlled therefore look more settled on camera.

    • @Dgannt
      @Dgannt Před 8 lety +6

      +Peder Hansen Not really. The AWD helps it put down power and transfer power between rear and front, very similar to GTR. That is why it can manage the corners and get out of them fast despite being heavy. But as soon as Chris turned off the stability control it wasn't that stable anymore. So it's the AWD and electronics doing the magic.

    This may be the BEST overall track test I've ever watched , bar none. It's just a delight in every way -- three absolutely magnificent cars, the great drivers, their camaraderie, the amazing track, the *outstanding* photography and camera angles, and maybe best of all, the wonderful spirit and joy of Chris Harris embracing it all. Just amazing! One could probably choose a favorite car, not having driven one! --- mine would be the 918 -- but I don't see how you could really say one of these is absolutely "better" than the other. Each is a masterpiece in its own right. Thanks to Chris Harris and his crew and to everyone who made this 52 minutes some of the best I've ever spent watching incredible, iconic cars. Bravo!

I mean there's just certain cars... the Porsche 911's rear end has always looked really wierd to me, like - WHERE IS IT?!? Doesn't matter how many wings you stick on 'em, what cutesy-boodle stuff you do with the headlights, doesn't matter that it kicks the ass of 97.5% of the cars it competes with, racy, streety, morally etc. - the Porsche 911 has a really oog-ly ass. Chris Harris stated clearly that all the cars used regular tires for the lap time comparison. He explicitly stated that the Trofeo R tyres were only used afterwards to see the difference and to experience them. I don't understand how almost every single comment on this page is complaining that the tires were a factor. Chris explicitly stated and explained how he made the tyres fair. Also, there is no way any of the manufacturers would have agreed to the test if there was any tire advantage, especially Mclaren and Ferrari. Get over all the complaining.

    the reality is Mc Laren made a race car(like a prototype ), and tuned it to be driven on road. Porsche made a car to be as fast as possible with hybrid technology (like their le mans cars ), and the ferrari made it as always as traditional way, concentrated on noise, beauty, pure power, then added some hybrid to match the game and still get the same result. we must respect all...everyone has their own way, we must respect all their cars of this manufacturers without fear to be beaten, they gave their cars, or Chris as an English gentleman made good politics and made deal with these companies to keep the results as close as possible to each other... nobody knows, but at the end of the day, it is Kingdom of car testing right now ;-).. good job Chris ;-)

    • @samr1321
      @samr1321 Před 8 lety +1

      Calle Söderberg lol, I think you are either deaf, or think that Porsche & Ferrari are bunch of fools. Chris harris mentioned that the P1 had race suspension/ride height, and was not road-legal and Porsche & Ferrari pointed that out. Now a few questions arise, if the P1 was road legal, then what was the need to bring a version of P1 with race suspension & fixed ride height to this test? If the P1 was the standard P1, then it could have automatically adjusted its ride height to become road legal again. Sorry, but I know (through education and profession) a thing or two about car's suspension and electronics(race modes...etc). The standard race mode in a standard car cannot by law allow a car to be close to the ground less than a certain level. The P1 in Chris "The ferrari hater" harris was a track-only car, therefore his test worth a much as crow's excrement.

      These tests are more like a qualifying shoot out. Cars need multiple runs, changing their setting, tyre pressure, the amount of fuel they carry....etc a simple 2 lap race on different tyres mean absolutely ZERO. So far LaFerrari and 918 have been on par(in the only genuine test done by the American chap). Also, there are words that Ferrari are going to release their nurburgring laptime later this year. Tomatoes and eggs might be waiting for us!

Nevertheless, i still love the ferrari. its like having a wife, you can see other people's wife and thinking they're beautiful, but in the end, the most beautiful ever is ofcourse your very own wife, accepting all its flaws and curves. please stop the hate between car manufacturers. each to their own opinion and what suits them. 918 = futuristic beautiful machine, P1 = overwhelmingly performance supercar, Laferrari = a masterpiece of the 21st century.

      +I'm Monte what exactly do you mean? You can race your ferrari however you want. Its not just Ferrari that doesnt like having their cars being featured in comparison tests without their approval... McLaren does that as well you know.
      In a way it is bollocks I agree, but I can also understand the reasoning behind it. Some people say its because they want to bring slightly tuned versions of their cars, I do believe though that what they want, is to make sure that the car is in proper and top condition, not tune it. I can tell you that in such caliber cars, having the car waiting in a garage, not being driven or properly maintained can make the car perform like ass... Its valid to request that your flagship model is in proper condition when people want to make comparison articles about it.
      Like Ferrari did here. Everyone says Ferrari is afraid to do such tests, yet here they are, no problems. Just making sure that the car is in good condition.

    OK, I take back what I said in previous car reviews. THIS is the review that we have all been waiting for!!!! Seriously enjoyable review with as usual stellar videography with awesome slow motion footage, especially of that shark-eyed LaFerrari drifting!
    What's better than a P1 vs a LaFerrari vs a Porsche 918? - A Chris Harris review of a P1 vs a LaFerrari vs a Porsche 918.
    And what's better than a Chris Harris review of a P1 vs a LaFerrari vs a Porsche 918? - A Chris Harris review of a P1 vs a LaFerrari vs a Porsche 918 featuring Tiff Needle (the only other car reviewer who knows how to drift as well as Chris) and Marino Franchitti going head to head around a track drifting around corners in slow-motion!! YEEEHAAA!! Doesn't get much better than that :)
    With Chris Harris, Tiff Needle and Marino taking these cars for a lap, it's no wonder that all three car companies brought their technicions to the track, since in this case, they cannot put a bad lap time down to a bad driver.
    So the P1 does after all post the fastest lap time of the three, but to be fair, in race mode it sat the lowest to the ground out of the three which gave it a huge advantage, not to mention those Trofeo R tires gave it an even greater advantage. But never the less, the bottom line is that it is the fastest road car around a track not to mention the fastest of the three from 0- 300 kph. Period

      +KNOW HOPE LOL, I read your most recent comments in the Hyper 5 video. You were really on the 918 pretty hard,lol.
      To your last comments. This race mode has known for sometime. As soon as P1 wins anything out right it's thrown up like it's a big deal. If you look at the overall heights of each car, the LaFerrari actually sits the lowest. The P1 maybe closest to the ground but cockpit is the biggest. Making it taller in height then the Ferrari.
      Can't go no where without this tire comments it seems. The P1 has the smallest tires of the 3. On the R's it mechanical grip throws closer with the other 2. There isn't this clear advantage like most think. I have looked at the cornering speeds of all 3 plus P1 on R's. Only difference came off the exit of turns. Where P1 could hook better allowing it to use it's race mode more effectively.
      That allowed CH to hit higher speeds on the straits.

      ***** Those are the comments I'm referring too.
      According to Top Gear this so called Pinnacle roots/idea came from the Veyron. The brains behind that vehicle was also involved in the 918 coming to life.Much like the Veyron it will be surpassed sooner or later.
      Problem with this 918 is most say GT3 RS the better driver's car.
      So much for the so called Pinnacle.
      Didn't 918 come to life late in 2009 in full form unlike P1 and LaFerrari???
      Been in development some 4+yrs. I wouldn't call that a pinnacle more like lessons learned much like the Veyron.
      Seeing the SV go below 7:00 on 1 hot lap unlike many on 918 side. Calling that a world record should call a world of tries,lol.
      The lowly Huracan topped 918 in a recent video on here.Without full power in HL mode, the king can be had.

      Jeffrey Williams Don't get me wrong, I am not a fan of Porsche. Porsches are high on pricision engineering but except for the 911 GT RS versions, low on driving passion compared to Ferrari or McLaren and my biggest issue is that unless when giving the beans to the throttle, they all sound like high powered vacuum cleaners at low revs.
      But the bottom line remains that the 918 despite its relatively heavy weight, still holds the Nurburgring world record and 0-60mph world record.

Cup 2s are a slightly stickier tyre. You'll also note that the times they ran are impossible from a standing start, the standing start was edited it. Meaning all 3 times were actually slower. There's also a good reason they spent more time covering the M2's lap around the Eboladrome than the hypercar laps. A very dishonest test indeed.

    So, Mc and Ferrari made tech speed demons that drive insanely fast and reminds the nowadays race cars. Porsche made a car that is fast and has less race character compared to the other two but, the 918 has something the others doesn't: the 918 is a lab for new techs and new ways of doing things. For me is just like the 959 vs F40 back in the day. F40 was the fastest but the 959 gave technology for the upcoming 911s.

I don't think neither McLaren nor Ferrari will design from scratch when the technology used in the P1 and LaFerrari becomes cheap enough to put them in their sports cars... . That being said I'm with you that the Porsche is quite an technological archivement...

    • @Dgannt
      @Dgannt Před 8 lety

      +911 Kills Bugs Fast
      Porsche introduced AWD for 911 at a time when 911 was known as the widow-maker. AWD gave that car some stability. But with 959 maybe they went a bit too far. A tech heavy car, but not a good drivers car. Maybe that is why F40, which came out at the same time and was a very simple car in comparison, was and still is considered as the best sports car while 959 is still remembered for it's tech only. And now we have 918, a modern day 959, tech heavy, but again not the best drivers car. It uses an AWD system, very similar to that in Nissan GTR, to overcome it's higher weight in corners and getting out of them. In that regard it's a modern GTR. I guess in the future LaF will be seen as the best sports car of it's era while 918 will, once again, be remembered for it's tech only.

    • @Ehwal
      @Ehwal Před 8 lety

      +Fast Er the Nissan GTR AWD system wouldn't even exist if it wasn't for the 959 and the AWD trickle down tech to the 911s and the rest of the auto industry (Audi, Subaru, Mitsu, Nissan).. It was also Air Cooled and yes it may not have set the faster lap/1/4 mile/0-60 time compared to the F40, but it came so damn close as not to matter on real life roads, especially when you could drive the 959 365 days of the year compared to the super fast, but only summer cars of the other manufacturers... IMHO it was the test-bed for tech that made the 911 (Carrera S/turbo/turbo S, etc etc) a car that not only was a top competitor on the track with all the latest and greatest sports cars, but also made it a vehicle that you can drive year round. Sure Porsche wasn't shooting for top speed records (if they wanted to, they'd own them all) and the all in out best 0-60 times (although they were the best or always up there with the best).
      All that engineering that Porsche did from the beginning with endurance racing as their test bed, ended up producing cars like the new 911s that can be flat foot launched 50x in a row, back to back, without going into a 'limp' (dick) mode like the GTR and new Corvettes.. Yes, there are not many times you will FFLaunch any car more than 2-3 times in a row, but it does happen.. I'd rather be driving a car that can take it than one that goes into limp mode and then can be beaten by a stock Civic Si after that... I love all three of these cars, and if you got the cash, buy the one you like most, but Porsche, as a car to drive, there is no substitute..

      well, thats my point ehwal. Porsche tried to build a car that is not only extremely fast, but also extremely advanced. If we look back, the F40 may be the best 80s sports car but, porsche got a lot of benefits from the 959 while the F40 was not a lab on wheels for future projects. And, in my opinion, thats what I see right now with these hybrid supercar. LaFerrari and P1 may be or not faster but, I think the 918 will be more useful in the future for porsche then the others will be for their makers.

      911 Kills Bugs Fast Porsche doesn't make a living from selling Super or Hyper cars. In fact they make a fortune selling tuned up Audis which are tuned up VWs... . Thats the way money is made and fine for every VW shareholder. What that means for Porsche as a brand in the next 10-20 years remains to be seen...

    What an amazing film. Even in 2021, that Mclaren pulling 1.7g is incredible. Can't wait to see the new breed of hypercars get spanked around by Chris.

    What a joy to watch this again after 5 yrs.. don't think this will ever get old, thanks to CH and team for creating this masterpiece of a film.. 2014-15 was such a high point for high performance cars setting yardstick for the supercars which we have being since then, faster and more usable than ever, and yet I think the holy trinity (especially the P1) would hold its special place in hearts of many probably forever
