Their was that one time Hephaestus trapped Hera in a trick chair and basically held her hostage until he got her to apologize for throwing him off the mountain for being ugly. Also that other time where Eris and Nemesis engineered the entire war for Troy partly because the Goddess of Chaos was feeling bored that day and got Hera, Aphrodite and Artemis to argue over who was prettier.

Interestingly, in the oldest known form of the Greek culture, the Mycenaeans, Poseidon was actually the king of the gods rather than Zeus, and he was also god of the Underworld. This is reflected in his later counterpart's patronage over earthquakes, which the ancient Greeks believed were caused by the movement of water underneath the world. The water aspect of Mycenaean Poseidon appears to be the five lakes of the Underworld; The Styx, Lethe, Acheron, Phlegethon and Cocytus.

I'll always be a Hestia man myself though. Hestia is Bestia. From an art history perspective: the gods are all made of marble and extremely durable material that would have been hand carved into these shapes.
Through history the specific designs of these gods would change with early years of production showing more simple forms and body poses, as time went on the body’s took on more complex movements and depictions, towards the end of production the focus was on fine details that would be focused on in the sculptures.
For the bodies being rigid or having little contrapposto, the one foot bent and one shoulder dipped, eventually contraposto would be the norm - then complex forms where the body was seated or performing an action where muscles and fine details would be prominent.
The hair which seems to be considered similar for both men and women is infact exceptionally distinct from each other. We’ve been able to learn about explicit hair styles for both men and women including updo’s, curls, and braids. Which would have symbolized various implications regarding status. While women’s hair is generally seen up in a tied position it is generally braided.
The aspect of clothing depends upon the gods but also era it was created. Exposure vs modesty was important and the size of genital areas would often be kept small as it was thought that larger external organs would reference less focus on other subjects or intelligence. You can see important political figures with smaller organs vs the gods which are often depicted with robes which would have been painted the appropriate colors.
Aphrodite was a goddess of not only beauty but of war- rage and love go hand in hand and to love not only the people around you but your country was a major influence in early depictions she may be seen in more complex versions where later focus of being primarily a goddess of love would show her exposed body covering herself with her hands for modesty. Her form is almost always ‘plump/rounded’ as it was seen as a depiction of a beautiful healthy woman of the time.
Artemis was a god who prohibited sexual desires so she is not only the goddess of the hunt but also shows far more modesty in her appearance holding weapons, having full clothing, and the deer or dogs. The deer is a myth that a mortal man watched her bathing in a river and she transformed him into a deer to which she hunted and killed him.
Apollo was a god of the sun and knowledge yet often seen with a lyre an instrument he created and is not the god of music - that is reserved for the 3 muses who created song, poetry, and myths.
Mars the god of war was married to Aphrodite. The child beneath him was playing with weapons - males would learn the skills of war and go on to be soldiers. The staph in his hand with a human face would have been haunting to look at suggesting his ability to strike fear/the screams of war. Altho those are not in every depiction of him.
While important these are lesser gods. Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades being the main 3 gods. The rest would be Zeus children. (Aphrodite, Artemis, Apollo, Dionysus etc) Zeus was married yet had no children with his wife as she was celibate. Hades had Persephone and while it’s a kidnapping they actually have a very fantastic healthy marriage. Persephone being the goddess of fruits/spring. The reason she is kidnapped leads to Demeter getting upset and invoking winter, when Persephone is released back into the word away from hades her husband does spring arrive. Hades the god of the underworld not death is related to the change of mortal seasons in this way. Plants begin to hibernate or die only for spring to bring things back to life. Otherwise there would be eternal spring without harvest. Demeter never wanted her daughter to be married as she’s a god of celibacy along with Artemis and Zeus’s wife. Persephone’s kidnapping and staying in the underworld was the only time the two can be together.
Dionysus has various various depictions. This version of him is lesser known and felt like a trick question. Most of the time he is depicted as a very feminine appearing male as the god of wine he often has grape leaves or a staff which was used by the followers to not only induce hysteria but madness or create violence. Women were his primary followers altho he did have massive followings of everyone. He’s also seen with bull horns as he could transform into the animal. Or seen as an elderly man. This depiction of him was tricky as he’s lesser known in his old man form it’s not considered his generic appearance. Often looking like a young man with feminine features. And grapes vines or leaves.
The staff in the hand of Hermes is the same staff seen on most medical signs in various countries. His nude depiction is a sign of being created in later years. God of messages and god of medicine.
Poseidon was the god of the sea and god of earthquakes as he doesn’t control storms like Zeus, he controls the earth to some degree. The earthquakes are tectonic plates shifting but a result of earthquakes is often tsunamis, it’s safe to assume that the earthquakes would result in unique waves or angry oceans or tsunamis. As for horses this mythos is related to marriage. For a long time he was attempting to marry one of the other goddesses however when trying to marry her he was designing gifts and one of these happened to be horses however he immidiately loved horses more then the woman herself and became enraptured with the idea of them and how cool they were reconsidering/resyndicating his attempts at marriage because horses were awesome. He’s also known for his unique animals living in the ocean all the fish of the sea etc so the making of animals is his forte. I believe he was married to a nymph of some kind.

@LeeDavis-si1ho Worship of the Greek pantheon and their Roman counterparts is very common in many pagan and neopagan circles (especially Hekate), and the central focus of Hellenism, a religion practiced primarily in Greece but also throughout the world. It may not be a Major Religion, but it is still practiced very devoutly, both among revivalists and reconstructionists who bring old religions back, and by folks in Greece who never stopped worshiping them to begin with, despite constant pressures from larger religious movements throughout history. Many ancient religions still have loyal practitioners to this day. Even in the US, I went to a Saturnalia celebration at the end of last year to honor Saturn/Kronos with a few Hellenists and some other pagan friends (good food, fun hats, 10/10 good time btw). Essentially, if you run in the right circles, you’ll find that they’re worshipped *everywhere*.

I have to give you credits for guessing many of these gods and goddesses with such neutral representations ! I am fond of Greek Mythology and wouldn't have guessed many of them because they were shown without their usual regalia. For instance : Athena is often shown with a warrior helmet half on the head, a shield at her feet and a scepter in her other hand (or other object of authority or wisdom), so her status of Goddess of War (in its strategic aspect) and Wisdom is quite plain ! Same for Ares : mostly represented in full armor, helmeted and with a sword in hand, his status of God of War (in the killing aspect) is quite evident. Demeter is often represented sowing grain in the ground or with cereal crops in her hand to sho her agricultural ministry. And so on !

this could have been a very interesting and educational video for them. But you read off a bunch of complicated information that was way over their heads, blurred the importance/role of each god or goddess and you did not explain anything to them about the importance of the greek sculpting and statuary and how it reflected the greek culture which is very important -- yet Sarru was astute enough to notice some aspects by himself and picked up on certain hallmarks. You also had a mix of greek and roman statues and you did not point out the differences in sculpture and presentation. You also did not even bother to tell them that this is a very ancient form of religious worship that does not exist anymore and was eradicated by Christianity over 2,000 years ago.

On top of that, they didn't even mention that it has been a dead religion for over 2000 years now nor did they even point to a map to show them where Greece is located instead of telling them that Athena guided Perseus and Heracles and that the Parthenon was her temple in Athens -- which would make absolutely no sense to them because it is all new to them (Yet fail to tell them that the capital city of Greece is named after her which is basic information they can grasp) . BASIC information.
