Three things:
1. Kumis must be spent before rolling the dice.
2.This game might not have all the expansions, but a lot of stuff from the expansions have been made part of the game. Kumis is identical to mead from the Hall of Heroes expansion. Also, the Meeting Tent combines the actions of the Gate House and the mead part of Mead Hall. Similarly, the Chief's Tent combines the actions of the Long House and the Quest part of the Mead Hall. The Quest mechanic from Hall of Heroes has been combined with the Offering mechanic from the Raiders of the North Sea base game. The Jarls from Fields of Fame are gone, but the Wounds mechanic has been integrated into normal raiding, and the Valkyrie mechanic and track have been removed. Similarly, the Renown track has been removed as well such that there is only one VP track rather than 4 different tracks to keep track off. Gold from Raiders of the North Sea has been split into two types of plunder - Gold itself for scoring, and Wagons for doing stuff like raiding higher level areas. The heroes from Raiders of the North Sea have been replaced by one permanent hero selected at the beginning of the game that gives a unique special action at the Town Centre. As you mentioned, horses have replaced armour, but the eagles are more interesting; some allow the associated crew member's Town Centre action to be used w/o discarding the crew member from the crew, others allow the crew member to double up on their special crew ability, which can lead to stuff like the Conqueror granting 4 VP just for raiding Assyria (N.B. the max VP on the board from a raid in Assyria itself is 4). Unless one really likes Jarls, or likes the overkill Renown bonus, there is not much from the Raider of the north Sea expansions that cannot be found in Raiders of Scythia.
3. I think the Raiders of Scythia art is more "American comic book" style and the Raiders of the North Sea art is more a "stylized animation" look (like that from Samurai Jack). However, the difference isn't just cosmetic; I find that some of the Raiders of Scythia personalities look quite similar to other ones, so the Raiders of the North Sea cards are easier to identify at a glance.
EDIT: One more thing - Herodotus writes that the Amazons came from Scythia, so all the female crew members going on raids makes thematic sense in the game, unlike in Raiders of the North Sea.
Thanks for all this really useful extra information
I'm in love with your channel! Your 3-minute board game reviews are just the BEST!
You had me at Eagle and Horse
It is written by the Byzantine sources that they call the Turks Scythian.
When presenting the Gokturk Emperor's letter to the Zemarkos Byzantine Emperor, he said:"Today, the nation we call Turk, formerly called SCYTHİAN. This letter was written with the letters SCYTHİAN." (28)

SUCH great artwork in this game! I want to play it!
So, raiders revised, raiders of scythia. It doesn't invalidate the original game, but I think it does a lot of the core functions better. Really curious to see how well its received, if people think the changes are as good as i do. Or whether its the sort of second edition that doesn't displace the original. I'll be selling my copy of North Sea, or giving it away. I wonder what others will do.
Won't be getting rid of Raiders of the North Sea due to the sheer amount of content we have for it (playmat etc). I think the Mico's art is a little more appealing and the iconography of RotNS a little cleaner. Looking forward to a full play through to get a good idea of how the changes affect the gameplay.
Sadly I've purchased North Sea + expansions too recently to justify getting the younger, prettier model
I don’t like the art style either. Fortunately, I have already got the Raiders in full already.
Have to say the art style is a huge draw back for me.
I'm the opposite of many that replied. I sold my copy of RoTNS with both expansions and playmat for this game. I'm out about $10 of what I paid for it all, but this game has so much more to look forward too. For one, variable player powers will make this game so much more enjoyable than the North Sea game. The North Sea game is a blast, but can feel samey after a few plays. This game seems to take the best elements of the expansions and incorporate them into a smaller package, plus it comes with the solo cards inside the box.
Love "6 Months in a leaky boat" one of my favorite songs.
Totally wanna get this one!! I always love it when cultures outside the norm get a chance to shine in a game!
Scythians are anglo saxon
@@peterpana5398I challenge your claim. Provide sources.
Yeah looks good. Hopefully they do come out with expansions! Glad to see the Solo cards are already in this box!!
I’ve just spent 6 months in a leaky boat, then I come from the land of the ice and snow! Whew, I’m exhausted! Thanks for the review (and I got the Split Enz reference even though I’m from the USA! I imagine Most people got the zep ref)
Aotearoa!
Such a memorable opening to a song verse.
This channel is amazing! When I'm interested in a game I see if you've reviewed it then 9 times out of 10 I then know if I want to research more into it
Cheers. Exactly the purpose of the channel, to give you just enough info to know if you want to dig deeper
Nice review as always! I don’t like the board but love the cards
Good looking game. Sold! Never played Raiders of the North Sea.
hmmm. A worker placement game is one genre I am lacking. The fact that it has a solo mode is a major plus. And my lord, that art. I almost want this just to drool at those gorgeous cards.
Its interesting to me, because the last game by the same artist, many people did not like at all. I thought it was good, but that this is much much better
@@3MBG Do you mean Circadians? I avoided it because of initial impressions of the art, but picked it up in a recent sale. The art has grown on me after a couple of plays and I actually quite like it now; it certainly fits the theme quite well. As for the game, it's really good. Played with the family and we all found the dice work placement really engaging!
Looks good
Your best pun and video outro *ever!*
Thank you! I half expected most people not to get what pithier means and think i was just make a silly rhyming sound.
I have RotNS (with Fields of Fame; I'm waiting for Hall of Heroes to be reprinted), so I'm going to pass on this one because they do seemed a bit too similar, even down to the "put down one Worker/pick up another Worker" mechanic.
Well, its basically a reimagining on the Raiders of the North Sea, so yeah.
Great review Jarrod! I can't help but prefer the art & theme of Raiders of the North Sea. Thanks!
Fair
This was posted 7 months ago and I've been eyeing this game. Has it made it back to the table much? Wasn't sure if there's a heck of allot replay value.
Not much, but thats because i played a lot of Raiders of the North sea before it.
Quite like the art style, played Raiders a few times but this looks better other than the fact i've got a few viking theme games.
I hope that's the same land of ice and snow from the midnight sun where the hot springs flow.
It is, my review of raiders of the North Sea opens with "you come from the land of the ice and snow from the midnight sun where the hot springs flow.", so i thought i'd homage back to my own homage of led zed
So, do you think that I can replace Raiders of the North Sea with all expansions, for Raiders of Sythia?
Maybe don't cover all the options that the expansions provide, but it seems that has the same mechanics.
And everything would be in one box.
From what i gathered, Scythia > Core box. But if you love the expansions then Raiders with everything > Scythia.
That's the discussion i've had with people about it
I thought I read somewhere that parts of the expansions were pulled in to this design so it’s already a “complete package”.
It is, and it isn't. It's like some ideas from them were tuned and streamlined and added. But some people like ALL THE TRIMMINGS!
I don’t have RotNS so I’m going to go ahead and trust the chef on this one 😉
I am super excited for this! Already pre-ordered. I got into RotNS on iOS and really liked it, but wanted the expansions. I am mostly a solo player so hunting down the automa deck wasn’t appealing.
But this is just perfect for me! Can’t wait!
Is the ressources will stay all hexagons shaped wooden pieces ?
Yep, I actually like it as you put them in a bag and blind pull them out. With North Sea, you could feel the difference.
Would you recommend this game or one of the West Kingdom titles?
Depends on your needs/number of players etc. This is probably the best one for low/mid complexity and 2-3 players
@@3MBG yeah I usually have 2-4 players. I'm definitely gonna snag this
Paladins is better if you want a more complex game, and architects works best at 4-5
@@3MBG ooo Paladins it is then. Thanks for all of the replies!!
I liked that ending ahahaha
I am still debating weather to get this one or not. I also don't care too much about the armour track from RoNS, but I do like the valkyrie and, after trying it, the fame tracks. Everyone praises Hall of Heroes, but I found Fileds of Fame more interesting (playing as 2p) with the fame and the Jarls.
Having this, I find the crew combos in RoS more interesting. And the leaders and the new dice... For sure I will want to try it and then decide it for myself.
Thanks for the review.
I know the Valkrie are out, but the wounds in RoTNS didn't kill your crew, only weakened them. I believe the wounds in this game can actually kill your crew, but i'm not for sure.
Yep, you can kill crew
Hm I think I might stick with tracking down Raiders and it's expansions and solo deck (I know there is an app, but physical for completion-ism). I've only played the base game once, but from watching videos on the expansions I think I prefer the dying & Valkyrie track over the wound system, it's why I probably wasn't going to play with the Jarl expansion on the regular. I much prefer the board and art for North Sea, plus matches with my Explorers and if I get Shipwrights. I've loved my play at RotNS and think it has a space in my collection, eventually.
Thanks for the summary video!
@Sunnypsyop Thank you for the offer. It depends on the price and when I could convince my dad.
I usually like tuned reimaginings and I want to sack Rome elephants be damned.
A tuned reimagining is the perfect way to describe this, so yeah. Enjoy
Only downside is Shem has said he has no plans for a expansion. I would love some more options if this game ends up playing better than North Sea. Maybe not needed, but it would still be nice.
I believe when the North Sea came out, he also has no plan for expansion. If this game gets the same level of attention then there’s a chance. Personally, I prefer Mico styles much more but this one has its charm in a way. This style would works very well for Egyptian theme imo.
@@RobGThai He said again very recently that Scythia would be a standalone product, with no expansions and no spin-offs.
Frustrating to have finally got the North Sea expansions, to find out this game is meant to be better. If only I had unlimited funds.
Different. As i say in the video, i think its better to North Sea by itself, but not necessarily with the expansions.
Any thoughts on a release date?
Pre-orders should be soon. Release date not too far away. The review copy i got was literally one of the production proofs, so its all done in that regard
3 Minute Board Games Nice! Very exciting to hear. Thanks so much.
Is it weird if I wanna play Raiders of the North Sea, then play Scythe...and then play Raiders of Scythia?
A little, yes
I cannot wait for this game! I wish it would be published in Spanish
It might be eventually. I know the first run is English, but it is going out in German i think as well? Depends on distribution deals for the company as Garphill basically only make games and get others to do the publishing outside NZ
It will be publish in Spanish at the end of January, 2022.
@@Max-pj9km oh that's awesome! Thanks for the heads up
I only tried Raiders or the North Sea on the app and I wasn't a fan, mainly because of the dying mechanics and always running out of something to raid (cards, food, gold...). I'll add this one to my list of games to follow, but I might try before I buy if I can.
That is actually solved with the expansions.... which make the game a complete euro.
Try Palladins of the West Kingdom
thought it would be a gold medal game
If raiders of the north sea didnt already exist, it likely would have been
North sea had better art IMHO
I seem to be in the minority that don't really dig the micos art that much, i prefer this one :)
