So concludes our mini-detour into Star Wars games. Imperial Assault is a genuinely solid dungeon crawler, but for me, its the star wars theme. In most crawlers its mages, warriors, rogues etc. Imperial assault has a wookie with a grenade launcher in one of the expansions. What's not to love there. Question though, does anyone play the skirmish mode?
Interesting I just reulised the simularity between this and gloomhaven
Yup I used to play competitive it's a real good game. There's some awesome missions. Wish the game had got more FFG love though, X-Wing gets most their attention.
Probably my favorite skirmish moment was when we went to Hoth and it was Jabba and his Tattooine goons vs Palpatine and the empire. Palpatine and Greedo both got on Tauntauns (which let you move faster and get victory points), and Greedo was able to chase Palpatine down and end his supreme reign!
Also the App really adds to this game because of the Solo play!
For those that want to play the skirmish, I'd highly recommend IACP - Imperial Assault Continuity Project. Find their website, join the discord, and start playing games on Vassal in their learning Jedi Trials League!
The game that got me back into board games
Fantastic run through! I'd just like to throw out there that the app allows for group play with the catch the player count will be reduced to four. As the computer plays the villians and the players are one team of adventurers battling the Empire.
oh cool. I've not actually played with the app but seen it mentioned a bunch in solo groups
@@3MBGIf you haven't tried the app, it is really good. It is a totally different campaign and is pretty generous with the amount of items it gives you. The worst part about it is having to learn a dedicated rule book.
I concur that the app is really good. It's the only way I was able to play any campaign so far, as we can't get a group together for it. I just wish I could get more out of the base content without the need to purchase expensive add-on boxes which cost as much as another full board game. All the newly-released app campaigns *require* other big-box expansions. Very clever, FFG... though I find your lack of generosity (and business model) disturbing.
I want to get a game going. With this.
Bravo!!
I wish i could know this game well. Unfortunately every time my group goes to play it, someone goes and choose another game to play. Very frustrating, but not uncommon in gaming groups lol
You almost need to commit 4-5 sessions to a full campaign to get the best out of it
One time someone asked me to bring it to a group. Brought boxes upon boxes of painted minis and such. Get to the cafe and they're playing Betrayal at the House on the Hill. I don't talk to that person anymore.
Nice painted minis.
Cheers. I have only done the core set though sadly.
Wait... Can you mod HeroQuest to add Imperial Assault rules?
Heaps of Storm Troopers
Just finished playing the core campaign. The win/loss ratio for the rebels was nearly 50/50, but I noticed my imperial player going easy on us several times. Generally, the game seems tilted in favor of the imperials, but it was still fun.
I play Imperials since I'm the rule guy in the group. I usually "go easy" on the group just because I want to make it fun for them. I try to think what the units would be thinking in the moment and play them that way. Like if Gaarkhan came and speared a trooper the rest of the units would probably focus fire on him even though someone else is a better target.
Usually my units aren't objective aim bots either. Because that wouldn't be realistic if a bunch of units ran through the heroes, ignoring them, trying to get somewhere. I try to make only some elite troops be objective focused because they have more training and can think about what is important, even in the heat of battle. It makes it fair and fun because it makes everything feel more alive.
The game is a bit asymetrical, in that the Imperial player wins by information advantage (aka, exploiting the mission and it's events that he knows beforehand) whilst the Rebel players win by combo'ing the ever living shit out of their abilities. One of those things is objectively easier to do when you're new to the game, and if either side has a more experienced player, that side will probably dominate by default. Also note the snowball effect that can make the game a fair bit harder for the losing side if they let it slip too far.
Lol it's Heroquest ... Innnnn Sppaaccccce
Homage to the best sci-fi show of my childhood. Pigs in space. ;)
If I'm not mistaken, I hear that FFG is discontinuing this line of games. As in, no more Imperial assault content. :-( someone correct me if this is wrong, though.
Not sure, there is a heap of content out as is. They'll probably do a second edition at some point
I've heard that what is out is what is out. I think they are focused more on their Star wars mini war games. But they have already put out a lot for this game, so I'm not too sad.
@@Kogakaze this is true, there so much content to keep a game group (like mine) going for a long time haha
Here in Germany the Asmodee Group has completely terminated all German products of Imperial Assault.
Everything is now effectively out of print and some expansion prices like lothar or hoth are already 150 bucks or more.
i guess this is the downside of a.) covering games i want to cover and b.) not being a con-going industry insider. I just don't know about the business side of stuff much.
Can you have a couple of people playing the Rebels and have no human in the Imperials, just the app?
You can only do a two-player co-op with the app (or play skirmish mode of course). There are also some fan-made 'AI' systems online which can run the Imperials for you too if you don't like the app for some reason, such as this one: www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/1891360/imperial-directive-soloco-op-campaign-web-app (I have no experience with it)
Pretty sure you can have 4 characters with the app.
Yes, the app is for 2-4 players as co-op. The 'only' in my post referred to the only way a couple could play together as the Rebels, rather than the app being only for two, but as usual with English there are many ways to interpret a poorly constructed sentence 😁
@Reggie Jackman Very true, but I suppose most co-operative games work well (sometimes better!) in solo, provided there's no hidden information :)
Quack.
Imperial Assault > Legion imho. yea yea apples and oranges, I don't care.
As someone that has Infinity by Corvus Belli and Imperial Assault, IA hits the table much more regularly because I can play with my wife. It's also way easier to play in Vassal with the IACP rather than Infinity in TTS with Vaulsc or others.
Can you not play two rebel players against an imperials “NPC”
you can with a seperate app that you can buy content for. But i considered that a separate product from the review
@@3MBG The app itself is completely free, and you just program it with whatever you own. If you only have the core set and some random figures then it will use exactly what you have for a fully free and fully co-op experience!
@@RichardArpin Yep, i've given it a go. Felt a little more clunky at the time than say, the mansions of madness app, but it was still pretty good
Ok
