UFC 178: Johnson vs. Cariaso was a mixed martial arts event held on September 27, 2014, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Conor McGregor faced Dustin Poirier on September 27, 2014, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada at UFC 178.
Following McGregor’s star-making performance against Diego Brandao on an unforgettable night in Dublin, UFC president Dana White said the time was right to bring the Irishman to Las Vegas.
White wouldn’t be drawn on possible opponents, but McGregor knew who he wanted, and stated that he’d love to take on Poirier - a teammate of McGregor’s then-rival Cole Miller, who withdrew from their originally-booked main event in Dublin due to injury.
“That would be perfect for me,” McGregor said at the time. “His teammate Cole Miller, he pulled out. You’re trying to tell me that Dustin Poirier, Nik Lentz, both top 10 guys, no fights scheduled, didn’t know about Cole’s injury? They would’ve known before the UFC would’ve known. And yet nothing. They didn’t campaign for this. This is a main-event slot. It’s a big, big event. And yet there wasn’t a peep out of both of them.
“So I know he doesn’t want that fight. He can pretend that he wants the fight and send out tweets and this and that. Let’s do it. One by one, I’ll take every single one of them out.”
McGregor got his wish in July 2014, with the bout officially added to the lineup for UFC 178.
The Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles played host to the pre-fight news conference, with all eyes on Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier following their ugly fracas in the MGM Grand lobby earlier in the week.
But, with the two light heavyweight rivals under strict instructions to mind their Ps and Qs, Conor McGregor took center stage and gave his pre-fight assessment of his matchup with Poirier.
“This is who I am,” McGregor said. “I like to look good and whoop ass. It’s what I do best. I’m not trying to be nobody but me, and on Sept. 27, I’ll rip Dustin’s head clean off. It makes no difference that it’s a little pea head.
“Dustin thinks it’s all talk, but when he wakes up with his nose plastered on the other side of his face, he’s going to know it’s not all talk.
“Don’t get me wrong - I like the kid. He’s a quiet little hillbilly from the back-ass of nowhere. I’ve nothing against the guy. I’m sure he grew up in a circus or a farm. He’s a nice little kid. His cousin is probably named Cletus or something.
“I don’t know. He’s a nice kid, but his chin is getting cracked, and it’s going to be cracked early.”
Then, McGregor issued his official pre-fight prediction and promised to put “The Diamond” away inside the opening round.
“His chin is deteriorating,” McGregor said. “Every single contest he gets in, he hits one knee. A gust of wind, and he does the chicken dance. Coming up against me, that’s not going to be good.
“I’m going to crack him with a jab and he’s going to wobble, and I’m going to put him away early. It’s going to be a first-round KO. Mark my words.”
While McGregor’s confident pronouncements ahead of the fight attracted plenty of attention, Poirier insisted he wasn’t concerned by them, or by the man delivering them.
“I see these interviews, Conor saying I’m scared of him,” Poirier told USA TODAY Sports. “Man, that’s ridiculous. I just don’t know what he’s thinking. … If he doesn’t think that he’s going to be in a hellacious fistfight with a man, then he’s a dummy. If he goes to sleep at night thinking that he’s going to walk through me, he’s an idiot.
“They’ve given him favorable matchups so far, I think. But this is the place with the best guys in the world. You can only protect someone in the UFC for so long.”
On fight night itself, it was all McGregor, who backed up his bold predictions of a first-round finish by rocking Poirier with a straight left, then following up with ground strikes to claim a stunning knockout after just 106 seconds.
This marked Poirier's first UFC loss via KO/TKO and earned McGregor his second straight "Performance of the Night" award.
