  • Dear Friends in the Dharma (and drama!), greetings from retreat.
    Here is an impromptu guided meditation that I have recorded during my retreat. May it assist in a settling into and a recognising of your True Nature, the Beingness ... innate knowing ... natural Awareness...to help lead you to Ultimate Liberation.

    I’m recovering from addiction to substances and end treatment next month. Your selections and voice have softened this difficult re-birth into who I really am. The most difficult thing for me has been stripping away of the concepts which my mind has clung to, in desperation. I can feel the Great spirit holding my body and mind, the revealing of what I thought I was.

    Thank you Jayasara. Many years ago I was a Theravadin novice nun at Wat Buddha Dhamma north of Sydney. It was a very difficult but also precious time. It is wonderful to encounter someone in this tradition who is so open to the expression of Truth in other spiritual paths, & quite miraculous to me that so many of your postings are in traditions that I have since embraced. The simplicity & directness of Theravadin Buddhism still speaks to my heart as well. Blessings dear sister, & gratitude, 💙🌈

      @SamaneriJayasara  Před 3 lety +3

      Hi Casey, thanks for your question and I'm sorry if this meditation guidance left you with the overall impression or feeling that ALL thoughts and actions are meaningless. It is not what I was meaning to convey (as they are definitely not), but perhaps it came across in my somewhat casual or careless phrasing. Apologies for that. I think I was trying to highlight that a LOT of our habitual and neurotic thought patterns and mental processes are a waste of energy and time and get us trapped into very destructive corners and patterns of thinking. For example, those thoughts that just mull over the story lines of "he said/she said" and continue the painful memories and the processes of blame, guilt, shame, remorse and so on. These were the thought patterns I was trying to highlight here to let go of, as well as those thoughts that are clearly just pointless and a waste of time too. One has to discern for oneself what thoughts are wholesome, worthwhile, skillful and lead to good outcomes. You have clearly discerned those in your life and inner being so continue with those. The general rule of thumb that works for me is: does this thought or action lead to suffering? If so, let go of it.... If it results in peace, love, understanding and connection, then it is worth pursuing. However, that does not mean that all actions and thoughts are polyannaish - some may be very direct and require a lot of courage and assertiveness. Again, one has to discern for oneself. However, it is useful to let of even positive thoughts in deep meditation so that the mind can rest in tranquility and peace and then use that as a springboard into insight/investigation beyond the conceptual processes. In the deepest practice of meditation, ALL thoughts and concepts must be let go of if one is to see Reality. As ultimate reality is beyond all thoughts, actions, ideas, concepts and karmic formations, the full realisation takes place beyond the mind. However, for now let us cultivate pure and wholesome thoughts and this peace of mind can and will lead us to the deeper reality. I hope some of these reflections help to clarify any confusion for you. With all good wishes

      @@SamaneriJayasara absolutely clarified. Thank you for your deeply thoughtful response, it was me that heard something that I have a limitation about, not your sharing,.😊This has been happening to me lately...I am knowing ,experiencing--resonating with non duality perceptions and suddenly a phrase from an ancient Master- will trip me, and leave me with the existential experience that I am falling down a hole that I had been gently rising out of. Recently heard something, not sure which teacher , perhaps Rupert Spira, and I suddenly interpreted it as the Universal Consciousness ( The Infinite )whimsically experimenting thru form /person for the sole purpose to experience the finite, I thought, that’s brutal. All my pain and suffering just for the Unknowable to ...what ...feel it? I got very confused because it also suggested a more anthropomorphic God, which has not been anything I relate too for many years... and , where is Love, where is Peace ....manifesting thru Awareness? I KNOW I am missing something in my perception, because I really have come to trust a loving presence surrounding me, but my understanding is confused.
      Would you be willing to share your insights on this. Btw saw you beautiful video where you introduced yourself and was deeply touched and delighted . Your comment about smiling more made me chuckle😍

    • @SamaneriJayasara
      @SamaneriJayasara  Před 3 lety +2

      I think the key point here Casey is to deeply, slowly and gently ask yourself: "Who is confused?" "Who is this I that is thinking they are suffering?" All of this confusion arises from conceptual thinking only and in that process we create this dream like world of 'me', 'other', 'God" and the world. Allow your heart to settle into it's natural state of stillness and emptiness and intuitively understand that all of this conflict arises from only one source - the thinking mind and the delusive ego. Have you listened to the latest recording by Joel Goldsmith? I have a hunch it might be helpful for your current struggle. It's a very beautiful teaching and very gentle. Hope some of this helps. Jayasara- thank you very much for your many guided meditations and your talks with Sam Harris. One thing I am trying to understand is the reconciling of the rest of our lives within this. If it is all just phenomenal noticing and passing away, then how do we reconcile going to school, going to work, our feeling of needing to do those things or even to not do those things? Or even your own "need" to become a monastic? I genuinely struggle with these because if on one hand it is all just noticing but on the other, things do have to be done( I a nurse, people get sick and need care and doing these things can in fact be in situations and times that are very fraught) then to say that it is All just noticing and passing away, seems to not recognize some part of it. Thank you very much.

    • @SamaneriJayasara
      @SamaneriJayasara  Před rokem +1

      The recognition and understanding of the transitoriness of all phenomena is an awakening to reality. It does not require value judgements about it or reactions as to whether it is 'good' or 'bad'. It is simply the way it is - a fact of all life. There is nothing that needs to be reconciled about it, other than seeing how our lack of acceptance of reality causes us to suffer. If we don't like the fact that things come to a natural cessation and we cling to it, or identify with it as 'me' or 'mine' then we are bound to suffer. This is what the Buddha was teaching in the Four Noble Truths. I encourage you to read more about the profundity of these truths in this free booklet that you can download here:
      amaravati.org/dhamma-books/the-four-noble-truths/
      When we understand the nature of reality and can simply flow with life, understanding the changing, non-self nature of it all, then we come out of our delusion. It actually makes life freer, lighter, and happier when we see it for what it really is. We cling less, we react less, we hold to a fixed identity less, and we slowly wake up.
      Things happen naturally and spontaneously and we make decisions without the neurotic identifications of an ego self. It doesn't mean we become completely desireless or without needs, but we are less identified with them or fooled by them. It also doesn't mean we become cold and indifferent; in fact the reverse - there is more authentic compassion as we are not as self-absorbed and attached. It's a slow, gradual path and we need patience and gentleness. Just keep practicing and inquiring and the light of awareness will grow stronger everyday.
      Wishing you much peace and ever-deepening wisdom.

      Jayasara- I am truly and deeply humbled by you taking the time to respond to my question(s) in such detail, it means more than I can say at this point on my path. The patience called for, while continuing to practice, at times, I find very difficult and often don't feel up to the task...and then, I can have the moments of what can feel like complete understanding and equanimity with everything. It will take me several readings of your response to fully digest it, but I will- Btw, there is nothing better than hearing the birds, and the entire forest awake in the early morning during one of your meditations. It feels like being right there with you.
      Know that you reach people like me all over the world with your ground level, and profound direction. Thank you again so much for being here.

    How can it be said that these phenomena don't exist? This has always been a concept I find hard to transcend. I can understand their impermanent nature, but I don't get why they should be viewed as "not-existing" just because they are impermanent.

    • @BryanJCloninger
      @BryanJCloninger Před 4 lety +2

      IMHO - dependent origination is speaking about the ontological extreme of being and non being. For something to have a true existence - more then say a mirage or reflection it would have to have some “self” or soul or eternal aspect to at least individuate it from the spacetime continuum itself. But upon close examination (as Longchenpa says) you find that every object depends on something else = dependent origination. Even down to an elementary level. And even those elements depend on the other elements for individuation. To go into detail you should look at madhyamika or a treatise by Nagarjuna. I can send you one if you pm me. Also Wei Wu Wei in Jayasara’s misc playlist examines this all the way down. It is the single most important thing to understand in all this and then anatta. In fact that is the only thing to point out at all. The rest is spontaneous.

    That was beautiful! Thank you! I hope your retreat is going well. I would add, according to my beliefs, everything, absolutely everything that we experience is recorded for all time in the so-called Akashic records. And therefore, nothing is ever forgotten. Hence, even a single thought IS REAL because it lives on forever in the Akashic records. What would you answer to that, please? And of course, I mean no disrespect to your own beliefs! Namaste

    • @SamaneriJayasara

      Yes, indeed, energy can never be destroyed - and science supports this. However, energy is substanceless and formless which is what I mean when I say "not real". It's not a solid "thing" that you can see or grasp and it is certainly not a solid, separate self which is where the delusion and suffering lies for most of us. Rather, thoughts are apparent without truly existing. Words are faulty though and can never adequately describe the unnameable. "Love" will do though 💜

    Is there a wrong way to do this meditation, can i make it part of a daily routine? I have worked with with it 2 times I had a very relaxing experience. I sometimes doubt and get confused in my practice. Any advice is appreciated

    I don't understand "there is nothing that arises in the world that is not OK? " I am not trying to be disagreeable but , I see child abuse, murder ,rape, animal cruelty. How is this "ok"?
    If all forms are empty illusions then HORROR and pain is empty of real substance, but certainly not "ok" . Again I am not disrespecting, but enquiry to truth and clarity. 💙💚💛💜💟

      "Okay" is not meant as a judgement call on the state of affairs within the so called and apparent "external world". Good and evil exist at the relative level but the encouragement in this meditation is to go deeper into seeing and understanding the Truth of the way things really are within your own mind as it unfolds moment to moment. Only then can we begin to see that the 'world' out there actually arises and ceases within this very mind. Hope this might be helpful for reflection.
