- These poems/stanzas written by Ilie Cioara have been formatted for the purpose of a guided meditation. Excerpts taken from the book by Cioara, "The Silence of the Mind" - translated by Petrica Verdes.
Ilie Cioara (1916 - 2004) was an enlightened mystic who did not belong to any lineage. He is unique in a way, in the sense that he lived in almost complete isolation, in Romania, Eastern Europe in a communist country, completely oblivious of nonduality, Zen, etc. Originally a Christian mystic, he practiced a mantra for over 20 years. One day, he felt an intuitive impulse to drop the mantra, and just practice the silence of the mind, by listening to the noises on the street, in the now. After following this practice for a few years, one morning, as he was waking up from his sleep, he realised the veils had completely dropped. His description of meditation is fresh and devoid of any tradition and jargon.

This is beautiful! No instruction on how to sit or breathe. Just be still and attentive. Pure listening. I sit outside with closed eyes and listen to this and to whatever. It is amazing and calming and so many sounds that come out of nowhere and return to nothing. Taoism !

In the Shurangama Sutra, it is written that the Buddha asked 25 Bodhisattvas how they had experienced the bodhi state. When it was Avalokiteshvara's turn to talk s/he said: "... I developed the Bodhi Mind and, for my entry into Sam‡dhi, I was instructed by Him (a Buddha name Avalokiteshvara) to practise meditation by means of the organ of hearing. The Buddha then asked Manjushri which of the 25 "paths" would be suitable for Ananda and by implication the rest of us. Manjushri composed a gatha to express his agreement with Avalokiteshvara .
