Christianity and Unknowing, Richard Rohr

Richard Rohr, as a Catholic priest and Franciscan Friar, will offer a concise history of how Western Christianity once had, soon lost, tried to retrieve, and now is roundly rediscovering its own traditional understanding of unitive consciousness (which was our word for non-dual thinking). The Christian contemplative mind was usually a subtext, and yet it was always clearly there too, and much closer to the surface, but only for those exposed to the mystical base that was revealed in the Gospel of John, the Desert Fathers and Mothers, the Celtic and monastic traditions, and what was generally referred to as the apophatic or wisdom stream of Christianity. These were our many saints and mystics. This possibility was brought to the fore by Thomas Merton in the middle of the last century, and is now flowing in many positive directions. It is now our task to rediscover the pre-Enlightenment Christianity that reveled in "the cloud of unknowing", what some called "learned ignorance", and the very notion of Mystery itself. Only when we got into competition with rationalism and secularism, did we adopt this rather recent mania for certitude and a very limited kind of scientific knowing. Almost the entire history of Protestantism emerged in this period, and thus the contemplative mind is an utterly new revelation for them, and frankly for all of us, as we again learn to be comfortable living on the edge of both the knowable and the unknown.
Fr. Richard Rohr is a globally recognized ecumenical teacher bearing witness to the universal awakening within Christian mysticism and the Perennial Tradition. He is a Franciscan priest of the New Mexico Province and founder of the Center for Action and Contemplation (CAC) in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Fr. Richard’s teaching is grounded in the Franciscan alternative orthodoxy-practices of contemplation and self-emptying, expressing itself in radical compassion, particularly for the socially marginalized. Fr. Richard is the author of numerous books, including Everything Belongs, Adam’s Return, The Naked Now, Breathing Under Water, Falling Upward, Immortal Diamond, and Eager to Love: The Alternative Way of Francis of Assisi.

The most difficult struggle of my life, witch has been riddled with tragedy, loss, and suffering has been with my attachment to having an intellect. I used to read the bible and see it one way until life broke me down so low that I lost all confidence in what I thought I knew. Now I read it and receive a completely different understanding. It starts from the very beginning of the bible - the knowledge of good and evil and is beautifully, though arduously, shown in the story of Job. When we think we know what is right and wrong not only are we unteachable but we loose our connection to the divine mystery of life. He is defining beautifully where Christianity has missed the point of the teachings of Jesus. I see a few teachers emerging that are helping unify science and theology and it is wonderful to witness. I came back to God through physics, NDE stories and Eckhart Tolle teachings and I am so grateful for the suffering that humbled me to open me up to learning rather than showing everyone how smart I was. My ego still messes with me constantly but at least I can recognize and maybe someday the dang thing ill give it a rest, lol.

The teachings of Jesus, Christine? If you read the Bible honestly, and the words of Jesus regarding Himself in particular, you would weep for your lost condition and ask Him to save you.
We accept Him or reject Him - we do not attempt to fit Him into our own preferred religion.

True Christianity is what was taught by Jesus and his disciples: that He was the messiah, God’s only Son, Lord. He was crucified (fact admitted by most scholars) and had an empty tomb (also confirmed by most…even Ehrman and John D Crossan). This belief was why those believers were martyred and persecuted by Saul and others. Again, please research the evidence.

@Brian Jett Amen, very well said. I'm also finding it amazing that those of us who do insist on certainty and knowledge of this all; don't also search so diligently to see where our Christian beliefs have evolved from. We are afraid to see if "these things are really so." We just have been handed down Westernized views of how this and that are interpreted, and ran with it.
I'm on my own deconstructing journey, and it's amazing to see how much I've been told and taught are truths; that are fairly new doctrines and teachings in the broader scope of things. I'm realising we focus a lot more on the non-essentials, than who they all pointy to:Jesus. We follow at times, everyone and everything else..besides Him in a sense. Because He is quite contradicting compared to most of what the ancient Jews had in mind. Not to mention many of our own current teachers. We might still be missing Him, expecting Him to look like this or that. When He's been in front of us all along. We just can't approve of people being accepted without merit of any sorts(reminds me of the parable of the wages; the one's who worked all day were pissed that the one's who worked less..got the same wages lol).
Or like the priest and devout man on their way to temple; passing by the man in need. But they had to pray and sing to God right? To listen and hear the "Word"? Yet shockingly, it was the "hell-bound", unlearned, heathen Samaritan Jesus said was doing His Word. Same with the two men who went to temple to pray. It was the one who was just honest with God and himself. Transparent. Genuine. Ugly mess inside and all. He Jesus said was right. Then the one who thought he had a monopoly on truth, comparing himself, his "salvation" in a sense to the "sinner."...it was the unlikely one that Jesus said went away justified. Still to this day..our pride is a problem. We dare not study, strive, pray, do acts ot kindness..and then THESE people get grace? Not the same amount of grace at least right?

What's interesting is, as someone who was born Southern Baptist but converted to the Catholic Church later in life, this is exactly how I perceived Catholicism. As a theologically rich mystical experience. Something about how the Catholic Church also held Mary, the Apostles, the Church Fathers, etc., all to such high esteem made the figure of Christ appear much more special. All these pivotal figures, St. Augustine, St. Athanasius, St. Anthony the Great, Brother Lawrence, St. Thomas Aquinas, St. John of the Cross, St. Teresa of Avila, St. Ephrem, Meister Eckhart, St. Maximus the Confessor, the Friends of God, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Ignatius of Loyola, Duns Scotus, Pseudo-Dionysius, Origen, Tertullian, St. Catherine of Siena, Fulton J. Sheen, St. Clement of Rome, St. Benedict of Nursia, St. Justin Martyr, St. Anthony of Padua, all of the prophets and Christ’s apostles, and the Virgin Mary, among many others, have all played such major parts in developing the fullness of the Catholic faith, that when recognizing their sheer magnitude, you can't help but feel it pales in comparison to that of the figure of Christ.
The Baptist Church never could provoke such an experience of awe and mystery as the Catholic Church could simply because they asserted who Christ exactly was and exactly what you are to do. Christ was this totalitarian dictator of sins and his love and forgiveness were reserved to only those subordinate to him. That's how it felt to me. Of course, the Catholic Church has its doctrines and dogmas, but the theology alone made all the difference. In Catholicism, Christ didn't feel like a dictator that I MUST submit to like the Baptist Church made me feel, instead, he felt like a teacher, a best friend, a king, and instead of being told to follow, I felt inclined to follow. The sheer magnitude of Christ induced mystery, awe, wonder, humility, and faith.
The idea of a “personal connection with God”, something I had always been told to strive for in the Baptist Church, really felt possible in Catholic Church. But Baptist theology led me to believe a personal connection was supposed to feel like the type of connection I have with my friends or family. That prayer was supposed to resemble a face-to-face dialogue. Whereas in the Catholic Church, the type of connection was, instead, the disillusionment of subject and object, and prayer was a moment to contemplate in that disillusionment.
So, even though I did study the Catechism and other magisterial work, as well as some boring apologetics, I was more interested in the philosophy, theology, and mysticism of Catholicism. I was more intrigued by spirituality than by doctrines. I was so invested that I began practicing before I was baptized as a Catholic convert. My priest actually had me take private lessons with him instead of going through RCIA because of how obsessively I studied and practiced before committing.
Every practice felt mystical, and something in me made me feel that this was how the Church Fathers and other theologians and mystics must’ve felt. Then, for the first time, I attended Eucharistic Adoration, and I fully let go and I just felt absorbed. Be it the Holy Spirit or whatever, but I cried in the middle of my meditation, and that was my first glimpse of non-duality.
I later encountered the word, and instantly, I resonated with it. The word itself captured the sensation I felt, unfortunately, I can't capture the sensation to explain what the word non-duality feels like.
Now, I'm a lil shakey with my faith, and I am trying to go through the works of the saints, mystics, and theologians, regardless if I lose my faith, non-duality is fundamental to my worldview, and I have Catholicism to thank for that. Particularly, the works of Aquinas and Scotus, for giving me an intellectual outline of the nature of God, along with the works of the mystics like John of the Cross, Brother Lawrence, and the Friends of God, who gave me an outline to experience the nature of God.
Edit: this isn't meant to talk bad about the Southern Baptist Church! This is just my testimony of discovering non-duality through Catholicism.

You really don't need to make this so complicated Seth. If you're looking for awe and mystical experience with God; Just believe on Jesus, turn away from sin with your whole heart, and turn to the Lord for his forgiveness; by saying OUT LOUD, with meaning; "Lord Jesus please save me, take over my life, and be my Lord " "Whosoever calls on the name of the Lord, shall be saved" For if you "believe in your heart that God raised Jesus from the dead and confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus; you will be saved. For with the heart man believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." (Romans 10: 9-10) , Knowing God in a real and meaningful way, first begins with being born again, born from above, born of the Holy Spirit; for God is Spirit. Then, the Spirit of God can lead you into all truth. Experiencing knowing God is a work of the Holy Spirit. Some religious structures try to replace this mystical work of the Spirit with their structures, liturgies, sacraments, rules, so called special saints and mystics, and also mere intellectualism . But what is truly needed is "the presence of the Spirit of God, 'being imparted into the temple of your body"!!! This happens by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Some people instead try every known religious tradition and system and philosophy of thought, and still come up lacking the meaningful life transforming relationship with God, that they are really longing for. I pray you come to know Him deeply Seth, by the presence of his Spirit coming to take up residence in you..Jesus told the disciples, "He {the Holy Spirit) is WITH you, 'BUT', He SHALL BE IN YOU!!! Tarry in Jerusalem till you be endued with power from on high!!!" This is where the AWE OF RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD begins!! May you be carried in his love, into this sacred knowing;... and thus be blessed to worship him, in Spirit and in Truth...

Already a fan of Father Rohr. This talk was very well received. Liked the Deus - Zeus connection and that when Christianity moved from the catacombs to the basilica after 300AD, the requirements of an imperial religion imposed a concrete christ, a christ who could help maintain order. Also like that early Franciscans taught the first bible was creation, some 14 billion years ago. Peace.

1 John 4:1-6 (ESV): Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already. Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world, and the world listens to them. We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

Fantastic. I wish all Christians were like this. I have just been talking to a born again evangelist who has a very confined idea of what he calls Truth. Everybody outside of his small tribe is condemned for eternity. I pointed out that, even in his belief system, that decision wouldn't be his to make.
In the end, any religion or philosophy is only a vehicle to help us uncover the Ultimate Reality. We only use vehicles as long as they are useful. We should not cling to them or be afraid to change to another form of transport, even none at all.
The idea of the dance in this talk meant much more to me than the usual Trinity teaching. As a Buddhist, I am encouraged to ask questions. Doubt is an essential part of each person's journey. It's good to know that there are Christians who understand the benefit of seeking rather than allowing the ego to take over.

To ground this non-dual approach in theology of Jesus see my last book, Healing The Divide: Recovering Christianity's Mystic Roots. In that book I explore Oriental Orthodox non-dual theology of Jesus (Miaphysite in Greek). In my book I translate Miaphysite in the English phrase: The Jesus Paradox. This theology was developed by The Alexandrian Mystics (Alexandrian Fathers) between the 3rd and 5th centuries.

Reverend Eslam Jesus was a man like any other man/woman but he Realized his True Nature during his lifetime, ie, "Self-Realization", as many others have throughout the history of Mankind. His words were "Pointers" to who/what we Really Are, right Here, right NOW. You quote Shunyamurti who quotes Ramana Maharshi who "Pounted" to the same "One without a Second" that Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj did. Just like Jesus, Maharaj said to Be the "I AM" which is prior to thoughts, memories, associations, perceptions, and conceptions. This "Stateless-State" is "where" your "self" dissolves into SELF - Pure Awareness ITSELF. In Zen, it is called the "Gateless Gate". Religions are for the masses until those few with "Ears to Hear" look Within, Realize who/what they Really Are, and Awaken in "Self-Realization". There is no place to go because we Are Already "THAT Which Can Not Be Described". The individual self is an Illusion. "We never left the mythological Garden of Eden - a metaphor for our Illusory separation from God, SELF, True Nature, Source, et al. This "separation" occurred approximately 200 - 500 thousand years ago when early Man's brain evolved through the formation of the Pre-frontal Cortex which gave us a very advanced survival "tool" allowing us to plan for tomorrow (future) by comparing our observations in the Present with our past memories - birth of the Ego, an Illusory mental construct which allowed us to "create" a separate "reality" with thoughts about Reality As IT Is. Separation was and IS an illusion. There is only NOW - the Ever-Moving, Ever-Present FLOW of Awareness ITSELF and we ARE IT!
Peace Be with You... Namaste' 💖

I still love the teachings of Jesus and believe he was an Enlightened Sage who taught the path to awakening and the Kingdom of G-d. I don't identify with any religion or specific teaching but still study Christian mystics, the Yogis, Sri Aurobindo, Michael Washburn, Ken Wilber, and Spiral Dynamic. I don't hold to any labels, belief systems, or ideologies anymore. I think Jesus came to unburden people from dualistic rules and adherence to a specific religion.

Arguments don't have to be angry or hateful. Conscious arguments let us distinguish between good and bad ideas - ideas that work and that do not. Of course we hope to avoid hardness of life and struggle by believing in great ALL IS ONE idea and somehow by following my inner voice and intuition we can build a better world. In this past year the name of the St Francis House (a day shelter for homeless etc...), has been changed to "The Boston Clarity System". Even though the flags with Francis's name are still up outside, they have taken his name off the ID cards needed to get in and replaced it with the new clarity name, where inside expressions of St Francis have been replaced with State Orwellian type of slogans on the wall.

He's right about the evolution of modern Christianity from the era of Constantine. With that modernization came the strict rules of moral sexual behavior which we may credit on the positive side with the evolution of monogamy, family life and even sexual romance. On the negative side came strict sexual roles including subjugation of women and male role in the industrial revolution and subjugation of non accepted feelings.

Actually, Rohr is WRONG about that very thing, Vic P, because strict moral rules for sexual behavior was extant within the Early Church continuing on through the Ante-Nicene era all the way into the Nicene era and beyond.
None of it was post-Constantine, as you insist. That is simply untrue. No person with even a basic knowledge of Early Christianity knows this to be a fact.

Brother recommended Richard Rohr but I've never heard him before. Would someone mind clarifying what he means by dualist/non-dualist? Talk is kinda hard to understand without knowing that... lol

    • @marke.anderson1072

My best understanding is Dualism is framing things in terms of right and wrong, good and bad. Non-dualism is the ability to accept that things we want to categorize as wrong, profane, unacceptable, etc., may not be.

Mark Anderson Hey Mark, that's a good definition of it. In Tantric Buddhism, which has non-duality as a basis, they say basically that there really is no good/bad, right or wrong ultimately.

Non dualistic thinking can open some dark places. Something that if Richard talked about could result in turning people away from him. Like, what if he brought up the world view of a pedophile? To think about that in a non dualistic way is to be able to consider that it may not be wrong. A lot of people find that very disturbing. And stealing? And murder? How do we know if these things are wrong if we adopt non dualistic thinking?

@@nickromero7140 and Travis Ritt - Mark's explanation goes some way there, but RR also makes it clear in his other writing and speeches that he is not looking at anything in an either/or perspective, but usually in a both-and perspective, so to come to your point Nicholas, the pedophile situation is both a problem and an opportunity - his actions are a serious problem to his victims as well as to himself in the karma kind of way in which we reap what we sow, and the fact that he has lost his 'true self' (his self that finds its identity in God), but his problem can also become an opportunity for his redemption when he confronts his actions and their consequences for his victims as well as himself ( I use 'he' advisedly, realising it could be 'she'), and it becomes the platform for greater self-awareness, and greater awareness of the 'other' who is not really 'other', but another part of himself against whom he has violated. Similar could be said of the stealing and murder topics, and any other violations against 'self' and others that we commit.

    • @alexacramer608
      @alexacramer608 Před 4 lety +1

I would say that the only reason an "opportunity" exists is because of the love and grace of God, but that the "opportunity" is not inherent in an act of pedophilia. The act in and of itself is inherently evil, which is a dualistic statement that I believe is correct. A miracle occurs when Christ redeems that situation. I disagree that dualistic thinking is a lower level of thinking...

The reformation was not the death of contemplative thinking or the beginning of "food fighting". That phenomena has pervaded Christianity for most of its history up until the Roman Catholic church persecuted any dissent from its own doctrine into near extinction and it was from that position that the reformation rekindled open debate.

He said that Jesus exemplified non duality when he said I and the Father are one? I thought that the Father is one and the Son another in unity. Non duality should say that Jesus had at most an enlightened duality. He did not say I am the Father.

This approach tacitly -- implicitly -- flattens out all differences and denies the very necessity of differentiation. Simply put, it denies that some ideas are better than others, some ways of being better than other ways of being, some actions preferable to others. What underlies it, and what it turns inevitably leads to, is nihilism. And Christian nihilism is as insidious and dangerous as any other kind.

    • @NonValidZulu
      @NonValidZulu Před 5 lety

It doesn't deny the necessity of differentiation at all, rather is highlights that under the surface there isn't differentiation even though the way we live necessitates the concept of duality. It's nihilistic only if viewed through a nihilistic lens, the other way to view it is that by being one we all have a purpose, but ultimately these are both different sides of the same coin, the only difference is perspective, and as mentioned in the video with dualistic thinking we pick a side and view things from our own bias.
