There could've been a better opportunity to talk about how the name Russia come from the old scandinavian language through Ukraine. (First there was the Kievan Rus from which the Moscow Rus evolved from, and was under the central rule of Kiev, until Kiev fell to the Mongols and Moscow didn't, though couldnt be called freedom either)
Rus (="Rooss'") comes from "to row" in the old norse language. As the first permanent settlements in the region were by vikings, who had to row up the rivers
EDIT: Ukraina was already used in the 12th century, by ukrainians to call the area between the kievan rus and poland, then poland-lithuanian commonwealth, after invading those lands, used it to denote the polish-russian border.. then the Russian Empire, after invading those lands used it to call the region of its western border.. because you know, ukraina is a slavic word, so slavic people for 800 years were recycling its meaning as to what they see as the border
As a ukrainian I always understood our country's name as "inland", because "u" means "in" and "kraina" means "country" or "land" in ukrainian language

The name “Vietnam” came from “Namviet” or “Nanyue” which means “the southern tribe of the region below China” is an ancient name just before being annexed by the Han empire. It got changed to Vietnam by the Qing in 1804 for some reasons with territorial disputes and that is the real meaning of the name.
